So apparently Microsoft is developing a whole line of portable media things, supposedly aimed at the handheld market.  AND, one's supposed to reach shelves before the end of the year?  Where did this come from?

Been around, as rumors which it still is, for abut 3 months now.  MS wants to kill apple, they've been waiting for their partners to do it (ie creative, Toshiba, Urge, Napster) and no one has managed much.  So MS is going full steam including giving you free WMA versions of any song you've bought on iTunes.  Again, all rumors, but will be interesting to see what happens.

I've heard the rumors before--just not reported by the Seattle Times, San Jose Mercury News, New York Post and Bloomberg.  Of course, they only cite a "source close to the project," so you're right that it's still only rumor.

The media player is being called Zune, since argo is the projects name.
