The Poll
« on: October 13, 2002, 04:21:58 PM »
Whoever's cheating on the poll (I have my suspicion of who it is) knock it off. The poll is designed to limit your votes to once per person--there are obvious and easy ways to circumvent that, but I was hoping you'd all be honest enough not to do it. I'd prefer that our crew be selected by everybody rather than by one cheater.

find out who it is and server ban him. iirc it means he cant get onto the site at all. seams fair to me.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

The poll will now log IP addresses in addition to setting browser cookies to block multiple votes.

Look, if it's SO important that you have to log in on multiple computers to vote, be my guest.

For crying out loud it's just a poll.

Why don't we program the computer to cut off the right hand of anyone who votes twice? ;D

Rather than play nice, the cheater has thumbed his nose at my suggestion and gone off the deep end. The easiest way to stop him is, of course, to stop doing crew polls. There's no sense going on when one person is effectively making all the choices. There were only a few more slots in the crew anyway, so it's no big loss. I was looking forward to "Alien Commentator on the Human Condition," but oh well.

Okay folks, here's the final word(s):
1: The cheater sent me an email and apologized. No more cheating will take place.
2: The sudden burst of votes, according to some anonymous tips and an interesting trail of IPs, is not the result of cheating but of partisan campaigning. 42, a devoted Farscape fan, told the denizens of SciFi.com about our little poll and brought in a bunch of new votes. Not the normal method of voting, but certainly a good way to increase our hits. So thanks to the cheater for apologizing and ceasing, and thanks to 42 for smoothing over the situation in an economically sensible way.
3: Because the problem has been dealt with, crew polls will continue as normal. Disregard previous statements to the contrary. And please, while we dislike spam as much as teh next website, don't feel bad about bringing a few friends with you. Everything that's good for the site is good for you, unless you're my evil nemesis (that's you, Kinko's, if you're listening--and I know you are).

Scapers are quite fanatic at the moment, probably surpassing the insanity levels of Trekkies, and whatever you call Cheers and Simpson fans.

I would call them "Cheerios" and "normal people" respectively.

the vampire in the current poll wasn't such a weird choice as the results said because you'd get to rise from the dead as a vampire

That's only if he vampirized you. This particular vampire would just kill you. With a gun.
