So here is something i have always wondered.

Precisely how does one go about 'Girding your loins'? I mean, it sounds really painful.

Men used to wear robes. It's tucking in your robes so you can move without them getting ready, typically so you can start working.  Essentially making them like shorts.
It's also used to mean putting on something about your loins as protection.

Therefor it's a way of preventing really painful experiences.  Wow, you were only slightly off base Entropy  :P.
