Bastille--being able to recite the books makes you weirdly awesome!!  I think that's the best kind of awesome.

I just finished the second one and I remembered how much I LOVE this story.  I'm sad that there are only going to be 5 of them--I could see this series going on forever like Nancy Drew or something.

So, I don't know if this point was brought up yet (I'm tired and I might have missed something), but if that mysterious lense amplifies talents, is that possibly how Alc. the first could break time around his grave?  Was how he could break time explained in the book already and I missed it?

Sweet--I'm glad to know that they come out early so I can look for it in October.  I was worried that he hadn't written the 3rd one before being sucked into Wheel of Time world.

Maybe this is just me, but I think one of the best scenes in the entire series involves a ghloam in CoS.  I don't know why I like it so much...but I can just picture it so well.  I think it would make a good scene in a movie (of course they'd ruin the way the characters look, though...)

Yeah, I thought Demandred was Taim too.  It would have been SO cool.  But, that's ok, I suppose.

I love Mat--he's my favorite--but I also understand why the girls act like they do--they're used to it.  They're used to him being the one to screw things up and they're used to being in charge/being super cool.  Does Mat deserve it?  Not really, but maybe a little bit...he's kind of a scoundrel and likes being a scoundrel.  All in all, it's a fun dynamic between the characters that sets up lots of funny situations.

I'm going to go ahead and call that ridiculous, Vatdoro.  Honestly, an artist's idea of what they look like determining your opinion?  tsk tsk.

Ok, so they both are described to be beautiful--Faile in more of an exotic way and Berelain in more of a skanky way. lol  I actually like both characters, but Faile is TOTALLY justified against Berelain--and honestly Faile responds well given the circumstances.  Do the people who hate her try to put themselves in her shoes?  I'd insist on Berelain leaving camp or I would have gone back home and if Perrin loved me, he'd follow lol.

Berelain says she's too much like Mat after he gets mad at her for not speaking to him and demands she be civil...so I guess she thinks she is blunt and assertive like Mat.  They also like chasing people (romantically).

We are very lucky to have Brandon writing these books.  It is great how much he cares about the story line and the series.  With all there is to finish, a normal-sized book could basically say, "And Rand won (or lost), the end."  I'm much happier that everything will be written out, as there are MANY story lines I've been waiting to see played out.  I am very excited for November!

(I've just realized I've come a long way, as I hate waiting for books and have complained about the length of WOT for a long time...but I've realized that I want the ending to be done right).

I also feel SO bad for Brandon working so many hours!  The worst part about these books taking so long for me is that he won't be able to publish his own series.  I need Way of Kings/Alcatraz!!  I know he'll still work on those, but it doesn't seem like he'll have much time.   80 hour weeks with a wife and baby...is tough, I'm sure.

Good luck Brandon (even though I seriously doubt you'll have time to read this)!  Thanks for your hard work and courage to risk people being mad at you to finish the book right!

I think earlier in the thread they were saying something about not releasing it electronically because it would give spoilers to future works.  I'm not 100% if that's for sure, though.  Ookla would know more.

Vatdoro--Thanks for not thinking I'm completely insane for my ideas on romance in the book.  Yes, I saw the two main characters becoming more like brother/sister or close friends.  It could become a love square before evening out, though, of course.

Yeah, all of those parts were amazing.   I loved the war scenes.  If "Way of Kings" does use some of the ideas used in Dragonsteel, that would be awesome.  I'm sure the series will be cool anyways, though.

I think my problem with being excited for "Way of Kings" is that the title sounds very mainstream, and I think Brandon's books (while still having mainstream elements), are cool because they branch out.  I'm sure they'll be just as good as his other books, though, so I shouldn't let the name deter me.

I LOVED Mistborn, but I think my problem with the Mistborn world/story was that there was never really a sense of normalcy/downtime.  In a world as ... destructive ... as the one they're living in, I guess that's what you get.  So I felt like I could relate to the Dragonsteel world a little more.  I also like scenes were characters are at school and learning.  That sounds boring of me, but I really like the character growth and having a little break from doom.

I know--wasn't it AMAZING?  It was seriously one of my favorite books I've ever read, and I'm VERY sad I probably can't ever read it again.  This is also why I am so disappointed that this story isn't going to get published.  I think it's better than the published ones (even though I adore those too...)!  I know I'm very biased, but that's how I feel.

So--I look for POTENTIAL in relationships.  The princess and Jerick's relationship had potential as they both grew as characters.  The ending for the princess left her with tons of potential for growth as a character...and I played it all out in my mind.  I wanted the prince (I think he was the prince...it's been a long time--) and the light-power girl to get together too...again potential.

Yes, the last line was amazing.  I love Topaz.  :( I'm SO JEALOUS you got to read it so recently.   What were your favorite parts/aspects of the book?  I loved the whole idea of fighting over dragonsteel and Jerick's power was really cool.  And Topaz was the best...his parts were extremely entertaining.  I like the part where he's like, "All of this work to get into this secret society and now I have to kill them all because they're sickos--oh crap." (Again, it's been like...7 years or something...so if I'm a bit off, that's why).

I also agree he did just try to dump everything in the end.  I think he could have just cut all the theology out at that point and brought it up later.

Melindhra is also a blonde.  Hahaha I can't believe I remembered that (I looked it up to verify), but I couldn't tell who she was in my earlier post without giving away at least a bit of a spoiler because I didn't know if JoeC had read about her yet.

I always thought Elaida was a brunette, but I have seen fan art of her blonde...so it seems a lot of people think that.  In all of the online encyclopedias of characters I've found, they don't say her hair color!  Maybe it's an inconsistency.

JoeC, I love reading all of your comments.  This is my favorite thread to read--so thanks for letting us all relive reading the books! :)

Birgitte and Liandrin are true blondes.  Chiad I thought was but I guess it's strawberry-blonde.  The Aiel and some people from Tanchico can be blonde.  I usually picture the "red gold" people like Elayne as blondes since there are so few of them.  It's really quite tragic.  (As a blonde myself I notice things like this...) :)

I really loved the ending for Spook.  His parts in the whole book were great.  I loved seeing his past--and I think he did have some of the most emotional parts in the book for me.

Also, Demoux lived--that was my side character that I liked and was sure would die every scene he was in since book one.  He's going to die in the first attack (first book)...(second book) oh no he's the spy kandra!  (third book) Surely he can't survive the final battle...
But hurray (or huzzah ;) )!

It's just the whole no Vin and Elend to rule the world thing that makes me sad.  I really do love Mistborn...I just don't deal well with death I suppose. :)

How very odd.  I don't think I cried either (I don't remember, which means I probably didn't much if I did...)--and if I did I'm pretty sure it was out of anger instead of sadness.  I cry at everything.  Weddings for people I barely know, random shows, new year's when I realized 2008 was over...I cry at everything.

At the end of the book, I felt more angry than sad.  I felt a lot more emotion at the end of Mistborn and WoA.  The end of HoA I was just like..."What?  Ok, that's stupid."  I know everyone else loved the ending, that was just my reaction to it.  I mean like...Elend's life the last year was a gift?  Whatever!  The mist spirit killed him in the first place to get her to use the power.  He wouldn't have really died if they weren't involved in the whole thing.  I didn't think that made any sense--and even if it does, it certainly isn't what I would have thought if my husband had just got his head chopped off, even if he had previously been stabbed!  I wouldn't get to the "Oh, well, the last year was a gift anyways," until after at least a month of mourning.

Vin never even had a real life...  Breeze and Alrianne get to settle down, but Vin and Elend don't?  *Sigh*  I guess I'm still angry...I love Mistborn and Brandon's books, though.

Hahaha  It's been a long time since I read it too, so I don't really remember.  I guess I thought she was young and she often was a victim of her circumstances.  I thought in later books she would develop further.  :)  Plus, I kind of have a weird imagination when it comes to romances...but I did guess all of Harry Potter's from book one.  Those weren't that hard to see, though.

I'm such a nerd, though.  Most of my favorite parts in Brandon's books are the romance parts.  *very slight spoiler for mistborn ahead*

The ball scenes were like my favorite.  I remember some people saying how they hated the balls and how long and boring they were, but I was like counting the pages until the next ball.

Vatdoro- :) Yeah, small world.  I called you Shelly's brother because I didn't want to "out" your name on this incase you didn't want it outed.

I read Dragonsteel because my sister worked with him at BYU (Leading Edge maybe? I don't remember), and he let her borrow it to edit it (she's an editor)--and she lent it to me and my other sister to edit as well.   I read it in like day or two, and at that point I was a slow reader, was editing it and was probably in school at the time...so I really liked it.

Maybe I'll ask Brandon and see if I can somehow get a copy, but I doubt it, and he gets like a million emails...I don't want to bother him.

Yeah, the ending was a complete surprise and I really wanted to know more...  to me this series had a lot of potential...but maybe not compared to his other ideas.  I know I'm weird and am way too caught up in "who gets together" aspect of the story, but I really wanted Jerick to get together with the Princess.  *sigh*  Oh well, I'll just appreciate it for what it is, because I doubt he'll continue it.  He has "The Way of Kings" and other projects to focus on.

I'm a little nervous about his next series, "The Way of Kings," because it's 10 books long.  I've had just about enough of that with WOT.  I love WOT, but I found Brandon's shorter stories to be very refreshing.  Some people are really excited about having a long series, but when I think about it it's just like "Ick...another LONG series."  I'll probably read it and love it, but it makes me sad to know I'll probably be  at least 15 years older before I get to the end.  15 years is scary.

hahahaha  Who keeps adding unpublished/unwritten books to Amazon?  What happens if people actually order it?

Vatdoro--are you Shelly's brother?  (This is based on having the same username as someone I know...if you're not him, sorry. :) )

Um...it was cliffhangery, but some things were still resolved.  I like closure too, and still liked it.

Of course, I also am good with making up my own endings when things don't actually end.  This is why I think I was so vastly disappointed with Harry Potter 7--I already had ideas of what would be awesome, and she under-awed me by not even being as cool as my ideas...and she's the author.

For those of you who have read Dragonsteel, I would have had much more of a problem with the story if the ending didn't have the VERY VERY end.  What happens there made it a lot better and awesome.

I would read it if I were you.  I loved it.  It's cliffhangeresque, but not as bad as like...the Empire Strikes Back.  It's still very enjoyable without an ending.
