What irks me is that she drops the bomb then she says that her books are intended to promote tolerance.  ::) okay, right, so you started writing the series for that purpose... I find it hard to believe that. and that is why it bugs me that she 'let it slip'

I agree that LDS writers can go a bit overboard with avoiding conflicts of this sort, but I don't think that there is any reason to add homosexuality into a book  (which is what she did whether it is after the fact or not) originally aimed at children. They don't see the distinction as an adult would.

It is not the fact the Dumbledore is gay, it's the homosexuality in general. Our society keeps pushing the lines of 'tolerance' so when does it stop? Does anyone remember what happened to Ellen Deg.... well however you spell her last name, when she 'came out'?
They dropped her show, or how about Robert Jordan's books, are there any hints towards lesbianism in the first ones? No. but the further along they get, you can see how societies acceptance has changed. Ellen is once again popular, R. J.'s last book was rife with "pillow friends." So when do we stop allowing it to be acceptable. Brandon's blog said that he was 'liberal' by Utah standards, I had my Father in Law refuse to speak to me for two weeks (I was visiting) because he thought I was to 'liberal' but I do not agree that homosexuality can be accepted.

Wow... sorry, went on there a bit, hmm, wonder what time it is...

I still love the books though. And I think I'll convince myself that he 'overcame' his homosexuality, yes I think I like that.

I'm going to try this thing out, my sister and brother are both doing it and talked me into it... Had to run it by the spouse though, didn't want him wondering why the kids were in pajamas at 4PM or why they were eating cereal for lunch.  :-\
(I've got a 6y/o kindergartener, 5 y/o movie maniac, and an 8 month old explorer)

my username over there is charityann (unique, I know, but I forget these things so easily, it's for the best)

has anyone read through the dares thread in the fantasy section? pretty funny...

good luck.

I've left him behind.... I'm sorry but I couldn't take it anymore, what with his new Starcraft game and his church obligations I just gave in.

And I'm ashamed to say it, but I just barely past the attack on Cett. (see that's how bad it was around here! isn't that excusable?)

Will post more when I am done.  ;)

A first baby at 8lb 6oz, oi!

Congratulations! and just before halloween that's great! it means for the next 6 years you can buy halloween costumes and pass them off as birthday presents! (I know I had two birthday's to do last week  ;)).

I hope your baby learns to sleep through the night quickly and that mom heals well.

One young fan asked if Dumbledore finds “true love,” and Ms. Rowling replied, “Dumbledore is gay.”
I got that from the NYTIMES website.

I think it's a stupid publicity stunt. And that my kids will never hear it brought up in our house. when they are older and have figured it out on their own then they can be as offended as I am.

It does sort of ruin the series though. I'll try to forget it was ever said.

I'm trying to figure out what the werewolf your talking about is?

I agree that they are in the typical style of Fantasy.... Dark Lord, boy discovers he is the prophesied deliverer, great journey, education in magic, the teacher has to kick the bucket at some point....

most fantasy is like that, I mean... Mydraal, Dementor's, Ring Wraiths, what are they all? dark cloaked figures that show up at the worst possible moment out of seemingly nowhere.

I think that's why I like EOUL's books, they were off from the stereotypical fantasy.

I also agree that if you don't like the first book, why read ten more, but I liked them.

It's like that movie Napolean Dynamite, everyone kept telling me, "I didn't like it the first time, but the second time it was hilarious!" :-\ second time? I don't read, watch, taste anything a second time if I didn't like it the first.

I'm surprised anyone would say 'wow that first book was tedious but boy oh boy that 10th one, it was Great!' I have read them all twice (well okay up until his last one I've only read  that once so far) and the first time I sped through all of them and didn't know at all what anyone was talking about when they said they slowed down. but the second time through I saw it....

I agree that he is good for the sake that he explores every avenue of the world... when I see a fantasy book with a map of this entire world and the book only explores 2/3 of it, it kills me, I'm always wondering things like...

"if this is the end of the world, what the heck is that lot doing?"

the first one I read by Jordan was 'New Spring' (the prequel) and I liked it so much I went to find more from the same author, I hadn't read more than LOTR in fantasy.... I'm completely hooked now. I love fantasy and give 99% credit to TWOT.

It makes me sad to think that with one man's death an entire world has died too, (way too deep? my husband would say I was sounding fanatical again) that is what I dislike.

My five year old daughter
" What kind of milk does the baby eat? Cow's milk, soy milk?"

"No, dear, it's Mommy's milk."

"Oh," pauses to think, "What brand is that?"

or

My four year old son

"I can't get that right now honey, the babies eating."
he stops and stares, shock etching his face, "the babies eating YOU!?"

well, as I mentioned before, me the newbie, remember  8)?

I convince my brother to go to the signing in Pocatello. He said it was cool and got me some books signed, then he said our cousin (who is much older than us, we're the youngest bunch of the clan) was there also, she had actually printed off a copy of Warbreaker's for Brandon to sign, well she told my brother, Ethan, that she used to babysit Brandon.

hehehe that's funny to me.

Is there such a thing as a book search engine? Like you type in specific things about the book, flying carpet for example and get a list of books?

that'd be worth it, IMO

course I am a bit of a book freak...
