There's a Mistborn movie deal in the works??? How did I miss that? He was very low-key about it, but STILL! Gosh, the idea makes me nervous....

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Way of Kings : pre-release

Oh, my gosh. Brandon just posted a more in-depth description of Kings on the Barnes and Noble forum (he's now doing a Q&A there). It sounds even MORE amazing. AH!

Quote
I've told Tor that I want to release KINGS on a schedule of two books, followed by one book in another setting, then two more KINGS.  The series of KINGS has been named The Stormlight Archive.  (The Way of Kings is the name of the first volume.)

So I should be doing plenty of shorter series in between.  We'll see how busy this all keeps me.  I think I'd go crazy if I weren't allowed to do new worlds every now and again.

But, then, KINGS turned out very, very well.  (The first book is complete as of yesterday.)  What is it about?  Well...I'm struggling to find words to explain it.  I could easily give a one or two line pitch on my previous books, but the scope of what I'm trying with this novel is such that it defies my attempts to pin it down.

It happens in a world where hurricane-like storms crash over the land every few days.  All of plant life and animal life has had to evolve to deal with this.  Plants, for instance, have shells they can withdraw into before a storm.  Even trees pull in their leaves and branches.  There is no soil, just endless fields of rock.

According to the mythology of the world, mankind used to live in The Tranquiline Halls.  Heaven.  Well, a group of evil spirits known as the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men.  Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers chased them there, trying to push them off of Roshar and into Damnation.

The voidbringers came against man a hundred by a hundred times, trying to destroy them or push them away.  To help them cope, the Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, known as Shardblades.  Led by ten angelic Heralds and ten orders of knights known as Radiants, men resisted the Voidbringers ten thousand times, finally winning and finding peace.

Or so the legends say.  Today, the only remnants of those supposed battles are the Shardblades, the possession of which makes a man nearly invincible on the battlefield.  The entire world, essentially, is at war with itself--and has been for centuries since the Radiants turned against mankind.  Kings strive to win more Shardblades, each secretly wishing to be the one who will finally unite all of mankind under a single throne.

That's the backstory.  Probably too much of it.  (Sorry.)  The book follows a young spearman forced into the army of a Shardbearer, led to war against an enemy he doesn't understand and doesn't really want to fight.  It will deal with the truth of what happened deep in mankind's past.  Why did the Radiants turn against mankind, and what happened to the magic they used to wield?

I've been working on this book for ten years now.  Rather than making it easier to describe and explain, that has made it more daunting.  I'm sure I'll get better at it as I revise and as people ask me more often.  ;)

*happy dance*  ;D

You looked and didn't read it?? That's some serious willpower...

(Though I have a sudden urge to do a word search in WoK.)

Do! And then make sure you tell us what's there.  ;D

Next summer would be great... I wish more books I want to read would be released in the summer. Way more time to read, fewer consequences for staying up until 4:00am.

I LOVE the series title, the Stormlight Archive. It's intriguing and it just makes me happy.

Something tells me that wouldn't go over very well with a lot of people. Much as I want to read WoT, I think I could wait... I've waited this long already, what's a little longer?  ;D Way of Kings for the win!

If I had seen the cover but never known anything about the book, I probably would have read it for the cover's sake alone. It's stunning and unexpected, and it makes me wonder what's going on. Why is her hair white? What's coming out of her mouth? Etc., etc. I just wish I knew, after reading the book, who it was.

I agree completely. The cover is absolutely beautiful, and I think it stands out. I know it popped for me on the shelf of the bookstore when I bought it.

Also, I think I agree with happyman that it may have been a suggestion by Vasher. But there was that one line I think where he says to Susebron "I'm the reason your tongue was cut out." Or something like that, right?

**SPOILER**

I have a theory....
I think that Clod used to be Arsteel!

Quote
He (Clod) moved with a fluidity she had rarely
seen, his skill matching the brief moment of dazzling speed that Denth had
displayed in the restaurant.
pg.337

Quote
Denth glanced at Clod. “They’re not all equal. Most Lifeless, they’re just
made out of what ever body happens to be around. If you pay good money,
you can get one who was very skillful in life.”
  pg 357

Quote
“It shouldn’t have happened,” Jewels said. “Arsteel was a brilliant duelist—
almost as good as Denth. Vasher’s never been able to beat either of them.”
pg 197

Quote
“Vasher didn’t use the sword,” Jewels said. “There was no blackness to
Arsteel’s wounds.”
pg 314

Since Jewels and Denth have seen Arsteel, they might have been able to pay someone money to make Arsteel a Lifeless for a bodyguard.

Oooh.... that makes so much sense. Duh...  it seems so obvious now!

^ Oooh, I really like Eluvium as well. I like to listen to it when I read or am doing something important. It's very calming.

Currently, however, I am listening to Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain album.

The Hoid scene in Warbreaker is much longer than I thought it would be. I'd been so tempted just to read that part of Warbreaker online just to try to connect some more dots with Hoid, but I'm glad I refrained. Would have ruined some of the story for me.

Also, Zas678, I love your signature quote. I just noticed it, and it really made me laugh.

This book is so amazing. I've been dying to read it but I waited for it to officially come out. I just don't like reading things on the computer. It was well worth the wait and worth every penny.

**SPOILERS** for anyone who hasn't finished yet.....

I was COMPLETELY taken in by Denth. It was great. I was right there with Vivenna going "WHAT?!" I was forming this whole different picture of him in my mind and then, wham! He turns out to be the bad guy! I love being surprised like that. I love getting so caught up in the story with the characters that I also don't pick up on stuff that they should have.

Also, the pacing! I liked how different it was. I mean, we got well over half way through the book before we got to really see and delve too deeply into the magic system, which is something that normally comes much closer to the beginning. But it worked here.

I loved Lightsong's comments and just his whole story. I loved the setting. And Nightblood? How cool is that? Brilliant. Actually, I could have just saved myself a lot of time here and said there wasn't anything about it I didn't like. I really just want to read it again. Five stars and two major thumbs up!!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: I've got mine!

Bought it at Barnes and Noble yesterday, just finished it now. Wow. Wow. It's late but I won't be able to go to sleep for several hours now. Wow. Have I said that already? And I've got a whole list other books that are on my reading list for the summer, but I won't feel like starting them for a couple of days. It's hard to read other books after I finish one of Brandon's. They just never seem as appealing.

I'm stoked and I have no complaints. People who are complaining need to lighten up a little...(not really here, just other places I've seen) I think I'm just as emotionally invested in these books as the average rabid fan, but I'd rather read a well-written finale to the series than a crash-course to the finish. I think people who are complaining now about waiting longer would complain even more loudly if the book was crappy.

Keep up the good work Brandon! We really appreciate all your hard work for us fans!! :)
