Never really thought about it. I guess they would hide in the pits that seem to be everywhere.

Verbal Kint is actually Keiser Soze and is lying about everything.
Dr. Malcom Crowe is actually a ghost.
Old Yeller has to be put down.

Yes, let's go out and save the invading forces from the Koloss, because I am sure once that battle is finished, they will just leave. They wouldn't even think of coming to attack us now that our troops have been weakend as well and put the innocent citizens we freed back under slavery. ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: what does kelsier look like?
« on: January 30, 2008, 06:27:10 PM »
I don't want to make myself part of this whole argument but I will say I don't consider Kelsier crazy.

Kelsier lives in a world where skaa are beat to death because they sneezed and it startled one of the nobility. Where it is acceptable for nobility to rape a skaa woman as long as they kill her afterward. Where nobility will have a laugh with each other during the day, but then order assassins to kill the other and their entire family at night when it is more socially acceptable. Where hundreds of skaa will have their heads chopped off just to send a message to the others, meanwhile much of the nobility will be watching the show like they are at Superbowl Sunday Barbeque.

When almost the entire population, skaa included, think all of this is right and proper, the fact that Kelsier wants to kill the same people that would have him put to death without batting an eyelash, seems sane by comparison. Kelsier will do whatever it takes, including accepting death's cold embrace to end the oppression of the innocent. In his world killing another to get what you want isn't crazy, going on a hunger strike as part of a non-violent protest is.

Books / Re: How has your views on WoT characters changed over the years?
« on: January 29, 2008, 07:32:04 PM »
Years ago I had started reading the WOT series but stopped after book 3 because I was tired of waiting for the next one and then having to read them all again just to get caught up.

I am now reading the series completely through (Just finished EotW), since I only have to wait for 1 book. It has been about 15 years since the last time I read Eye of the World. I don't even remember what happens through the books, but I do still get flashes of memory while I read. Like I will remember the look of a city before Jordan describes it in the book, or what a character looks like before they are introduced.

It's interesting to say the least. It is one thing to recognize someone you have met in person but you can't remember who they are or what their name is and when you do it all comes back in a flash. It is another to finally put a name to a face, a face constructed by descriptions in a book that you remember long after the events fade from memory. I guess that shows the kind of author Jordan is, that he paints the portrait of a person I would recognize if I saw them walking down the street.

Anyway, for me Rand, Mat and Perrin are exactly the same. Keep in mind, I have only finished rereading book 1. I still relate to them even though I am considered an 'old man' by comparison. I guess it's because I aged but did not grow up. I still put my foot in my mouth, skydive even though it scares me to death and fail to understand women. You would think after turning 35, having 2 knee reconstructions and 1 back surgery, I would stop living much of my life like a teenager. I didn't change, my responsibilities did.

The only person that really changed for me was Moraine. She's no longer the controlling older woman, she's the nagging know it all wife. <roflmao>

If only one person has a accent, then the spoken language of their world is English, otherwise the author would have translated the accent too.

If no one has a accent, then it's safe to say that they don't speak English and the author translated it to an understandable version for us. Or they all just speak English, as Ookla points out.

If someone has a accent early in a book but then they don't at the end, their speech hasn't changed, it is the reader that has learned to comprehend them. I'm sure if you read the book a second time you will notice that they no longer speak with an accent. Wasing the was, at least.

Woah, that's exactly along the same lines that I was thinking!

Maybe great minds do think alike.

Ok, I'm thinking of a word and it's definitely not kitty. Can you guess what it is?  ;D

Anyway, I don't care what comes out next, because I have full confidence that I will love it and be the first one at the bookstore to buy it.   ;D

Guess again. I'm already camped out next to the cash register ready to purchase my preorder.  ;D

Wonder how long I will have to wait; at least there's a Starbucks and a bathroom nearby.  <twiddling thumbs>

I think THSGRHPMoME's packing a little extra in his badunka dunk so.....

Actually, others on this board have suggested he might look a little like Nathan Fillion. The suggestions are in the 'If Mistborn were made into a movie' thread.

When I was reading it however, I always imagined him looking more like a skinnier, blonder Aragorn.

Hope that helps.

Scribbler needs to come out soon to.[Is that the stand alone?]

I thought I read somewhere that Scribbler would have to be pitched toward a different publisher like Scholastic or something.

And this Dragonsteel thing intrigues me, which means I'm probably going to be ripping my hair out til I find out what it is (hinthint)

If you want to check it out, while EUOL was doing preview wednesday he put up a couple of the chapters in his blog.

Do you happen to have a link? I can only find chapter 1, which really only introduces Midius with a hint of lightweaving.

I brought up this point in another thread and assumed that they had some failsafe procedures in place to handle mistings or even mistborns. These probably dealt with forcing them to consume and burn aluminum each day which would deplete any metals they could draw upon. This would curtail the threat of them destroying the pits by using allomancy near atium goedes.

There's only a couple explanations I could come up with as to why they would go to such lengths rather than just killing her.

First, they don't want people to know that allomancy can destroy the atium, so what better way to distract everyone than to put mistings to use in the mines, even though the atium is being carefully guarded from them.

Second, they had to torture Kelsier more for messing with the Lord Ruler. Just killing her wouldn't be enough, they would have to work her half to death and then beat her in front of him. It fits with their systematic abuse of the Skaa to keep them downtrodden.

I wrote this whole long analysis, but ultimately I am selfish so it comes down to an easy choice.  I will have been patiently waiting while Brandon writes a book I may never read, so since Dragonsteel is already written, might as well publish it. I will, of course, support whatever decision Mr. Sanderson makes.

For the curious, here is a brief rundown of my thoughts on all of the choices. You shoulda seen my earlier post:

Warbreaker did not feel like a standalone, necessitating a sequel.

An Elantris sequel would be terrible without continuing from the first book. I would like to know 1)how Raoden rebuilt the city, even if he does just use his magic abilities 2)how derethi created 'Elantrian' abilities without the shaod 3)how Raoden and Sarene's relationship can handle the mortal/near immortal dynamic 4)the battle that ensues. The derethis now know the Elantrians have returned; the shouldn't be as unprepared the second time around.

I haven't read Mistborn 3, so I don't know how a sequel would be. I would most likely prefer a prequel, considering we don't know what happened when Kelsier snapped and killed many men; how Kelsier met Gemmel and convinced him to tutor; how Kelsier found out about the 11th metal, etc. Besides, I grew tired of Terry Brooks later books when he would rehash the book's world with different characters and decendents.

Random Standalone would be great but it would have to be his best book to date, otherwise the wait between AMOL and writing the new one would be too much to bear, lol.

I would love an Epic, but a tiny part of me is worried that this will be the only book of Brandon's I don't like and he will be spending years devoted to it. Plus, I'm kind of impatient and an epic is hardly something you speed through in the writing process. If Brandon could put out a brief synopsis, I might change my mind.....

Dragonsteel. Already done. I wouldn't have to wait for more Sanderson content. If I don't like it, he will already be working on another book.

So, I'm guessing that burning duralumin when you are already burning atium allows you to see much further than a couple seconds into the future....

Man, October can't come soon enough. Any chance MB3 gets pushed forward if we say pretty please?
