Kaladin's the toughest for me to picture even though he was such a huge part of this book (or maybe it's because we got such a huge glimpse compared to everyone else). I just can't imagine him being played by Joseph Gordon Levitt mainly because I still see him as that little kid on 3rd rock (I've thrown out a bunch of actors for similar reasons). I think the closest at this time for me would be Jonathan Rhys Meyers even though he's shorter and older than I imagine. I'll have to keep thinking about this list.

Yeah, I had noticed that as well. I also toyed with the notion that he had the ability to control Kal's emotions in more of a magic ability type of way.

I pictured something more like this, although I don't have any supporting evidence in the text:

You also have those creatures that Dalinar fights in a vision that almost appear to be made from smoke.

Edit: I mean to say, perhaps there are ones for the other focus elements or whatever they are called.

Galivier's plate and blade would be very noticable. His plate glistens blue with gold around the edges and wings on his helm. His blade was 6 feet long with a design along the blade like burning flames, silvery metal that gleamed and almost seemed to glow. The plate doesn't appear to show up in text anywhere else (Elhokar:Gold, Sadeas:Red, Amaram:Gold, Adolin:Painted Blue, Dalinar:Slate-Grey, Parshendi:Silver), although it is noted that they paint their armor. Both Amaram and the Parshendi that Dalinar fights have blades shaped like flame (one in motion, the other frozen in metal) but other than that I can't think of any that have a design of burning flames. I would guess that if the armor and blade were recovered, that Elhokar would wear it rather than his own. So that leads me to believe that they have walked off and will show up in a later book.

Stick around. It's questions like this that can help an author perfect his books. If you have doubts about how feasible the battles are, others may as well. Perhaps Brandon will expand upon the history of the Plain's war to indicate why they do things the way they do.

Yeah, I think you are. Felling them sooner means Sadeas forces have to try to come across fewer bridges. If they waited until the bridgemen got there, it just means that there are 20+ bridges ready to go at the same time, arrows pretty much still already spent and the soldiers pushing the bridges across would be heavily armored. Think about defending ground against 8 bridges or 20 bridges.

I think you are getting too caught up in the limited exposure you have to the battles, it is a 6 year war after all. Perhaps they attempted fire arrows but they failed. Perhaps Alethi troops tried to sneak behind once and it worked but now any troops that try it are ambushed and killed. Perhaps they tried to wait until the bridges got to the chasms but then had to defend against many more troops at a time coming across. Perhaps it is strategy of Parshendi to lull the Alethi (and you, lol) into thinking that winning the battle is more important than winning the war.

She said it was the fruit of her most heinous act or something along those lines and that act is probably killing her own father since she dwells on it so much. She drew her father (most likely) laying dead in a pool of blood. Since shardblades just kind of pass through living tissue without leaving a mark, for her to have killed her father with the blade and leave blood means she would have had to kill him with the blade but continue swinging at a dead body, although someone pointed out that his heart wouldn't have been beating and pumping blood out of the body so there may not be a pool. More likely, she killed her father with a regular blade, upon death his shardblade appeared and she took it in a panic to prevent her brothers or anyone else from getting it.

They wouldn't have been able to sell the shardblade because her father had made enemies with many of the people that could afford to pay them enough to save the family. Even mentioning that they had a blade to sell would throw up a huge red flag that they were desperate for money and just make the family even more of a target. Shallan can't let go of the weapon because one of her brothers would probably attempt to gamble it away and the other displays serial killer traits. Hence, her burden to carry.

Just wanted to add this excerpt from Dalinars vision of the Radiants discarding their blades and armor:

Quote
Dalinar reached the Shardblades. They sprouted from the rock like glittering silver trees, a forest of weapons. They glowed softly in a way his own Shardblade never had, but as he dashed among them, their light started to fade.

A terrible feeling struck him. A sense of immense tragedy, of pain and betrayal. Stopping where he stood, he gasped, hand to his chest. What was happening? What was the dreadful feeling, that screaming he swore he could almost hear?

Well, since we are trying to hook people up, the way I see it, there will probably be a love triangle thing where Shallan can't make up her mind between Andolin and Renarian. Andolin is the handsome and confident man, while Renarian is the reserved and intelligent man that can return her witty comments.

Andolin falls in love with Shallan, deciding that she is the one who he will finally settle him down; he needs a wife when he takes over for his father after all. Shallan is the first woman that Renarian has taken an interest in and he falls madly in love. He would give his life for her, which is pretty much how he wins her heart. He again recklessly charges in to battle, this time to save Shallan. He sustains major injuries, which she is able to heal with her blood Soulcasting abilities and she also cures him of his pre-existing maladies at that time.

Renarian gave her the most precious gift he could, his life. In return, she gives him her most precious gift (not that one perverts): her blade. Her family is now protected and Renarian is able to protect her directly, armed with the blade, plate from his father, a head full of smarts (passed down from his mother, lol) and the courage to charge unprotected to save those he loves.

The End.

A silhouette of the crew pushing a bridge over a chasm, similar to raising the flag at Iwo Jima.

We'll cross that bridge when we carry it there.

Really like the wearing your mom thing cause I say that all the time.  8)

I don't have my book in front of me right now so this is going more from memory but I thought that in the section where the King gets knocked to the ground by the Chasmfiend and his sword dissipates, that it mentions that a sword could remain solid if you willed it.

There may be differences in the blades themselves though because in one section it mentions that someones sword was really long and would be unwieldy by someone without full shardplate but in another section Dalinar mentions that the blades are practically light as air. He could of course be factoring in shardplate. In any case, I'll have to reread the book to come across the exact quotes again but I remember thinking, that it was odd.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Spren and Hoid (spoilers)
« on: September 11, 2010, 09:54:51 AM »
No, the wavy line-head spren are an unknown type of spren that seems to confer the ability to soulcast without a soulcaster.
Deathspren are the black, insect-like spren that people who are on the verge of death see. (Note Kaladin's viewpoints after surviving the highstorm, he sees deathspren shortly before he is given stormlight-infused spheres which bring him back from the point of death.)

Chapter 4 Epigraph: "I'm dying, aren't I? Healer, why do you take my blood? Who is that beside you, with his head of lines? I can see a distant sun, dark and cold, shining in a black sky."

Sounds like its from someone under the care of Taravangian, which happens to be where Shallan is located when she draws them.
