Everything Else / Re: The best American, according to us British
« on: July 04, 2003, 09:56:54 PM »
There was actually a signficant amount of unofficial support for the South by Britain, especially (but not exclusively) by private organizations. The north and south both agreed on the issue of slave trading, but I think that there were still some hard feelings between the Union states and Britain over that whole revolution thing.

So if I understand correctly, 47% of Brits think that the greatest American is a beer-guzzling, pot-bellied, dysfunctional imbecile with a mild speech impediment?

I'm actually not sure if this reflects poorly on Americans... or on Brits.

Lets say just yourself, the clothes on your back, and anything that's readily available that you can carry in your hands.

Details aside, I think you should just choose one system and stick with it, and make any necessary changes from scratch.

It sounds to me as though you've set your heart on using D20, so I'll go ahead and add my two bits since thats the only system I've any real familiarity with anyway.

The major problem with using D20 for a superhero game, that I can see, is that in D20 everything is dynamic -- there are no static abilities. The closest is feats, but you can choose one or more new feats with each level gain.

So you'd probably have to use a new set of abilities called something like "Powers." Because I'm bored I even came up with an example Power to illustrate. I should hope the source would be obvious. :)

Hulking Beast
Description: When angry, the character transforms into a hulking creature with immense strength, and flies into a rage.
When overcome by anger, the character grows one Size larger (i.e. from Medium to Large). Instead of the standard size modifier to STR, the character's old STR is exactly doubled. The character also flies into a rage, incurring all the standard benefits and penalties of the Barbarian special ability Rage.
Uses per Day: 1 per level
Duration: Maximum 10 minutes per level, or until ended by player.

Ok, I'm not much of an Incredible Hulk fan, nor do I have access to my D&D books right now, so this is not going to be perfect, but after all its just an example.

In the last 150 years? Since the 1850s? What has really changed?

I can't speak for the British -- but here in the states, these are the major changes I can think of: Boarding schools have become less popular, there is more career-oriented education in high school, and teachers are, as a generality, slightly less strict.. in other words most of them won't beat you with a stick if you do something wrong. But the actual methods and systems of education are the same.

Actually, the most evolved education system I know of is in the small island country of Malta. But.. this is entirely off the subject.

Everything Else / Time Machine Thread #2
« on: June 20, 2003, 12:10:15 PM »
There's another Time Machine thread in the 'Rants and Stuff' section, and I didn't feel like coming up with a more creative name for this one just at the moment.

Question: If you had a one-way ticket to any point in time -- for instance, you have a one-time-use time machine -- what date would you choose? Keep in mind, its one way, so there's no coming back. You'd have to live in that time for the rest of your natural life, and any changes you made to the future (if you went backward) would not directly affect you.

Seems to me pretty much any semi-universal, full-range system that has rules for super hero like abilities would work great, as long as you come up with your own list of equipment and skills to reflect the time period. Which is going to be a must anyway.

For instance, the system Fellfrosch is using for the Patriot City game would work -- I don't know the system at all, heck I don't even know for sure which one he's using (is it Palladium Heroes Unlimited?), but it seems to me that mucking with the equipment/skills shouldn't be too hard, and considering that the Public Education System hasn't really changed much in the last 150 years, I'm not sure I understand where the challenge lies.

It would be nice if someone with some semblance of concern for his people would come to power, at least.

And I have a hard time believing that this prank actually occurred -- I doubt Castro publishes his personal phone line.

/me laughs at Fell's uncles misfortune...

/me prepares to dodge the impending onslaught of misfortune that is bound to follow for Rob Dixon in the Patriot City game

Note: I don't really have anything against Fell's uncle. I just think its funny that he started actually taking orders from people.

And on that note, can I do a poll? I have a great French one.

Please, no more foreign language polls! They make absolutely no sense to me and frankly, make me feel stupid.

Wait.. thats not likely to do much but encourage you, is it. ;)

At the risk of offending certain parties, I will just say that I prefer the PC. If I said any more I'd be deeply concerned for the welfare of this thread.

While I'm basically in the same boat as EUOL, I think I'd be able to shrug it off after a day or two of good, solid contemplation.

After which time I'd give a portion of it to my Church, then start a game development business from scratch, hiring the best developers out there, and work on one of my dream games.

I'd also invest about 10 mil, take care of a few of my closest friends and relatives, and spend the rest setting up a couple of charities and founding either a Charter School or a technology college.

By this time I'd be basically broke -- except that I'd still have the income from that 10 mil, with which I would support my family, and basically just live life.
