Rants and Stuff / Re: The state of the Future

2034: Brian, having long ago forgotten about TWG, is now a low-ranking officer in the Time Corps, and is assigned to clean up the temporal vortex set in motion by the chaotic time manipulation activity of the recently obliterated NTWG and its predecessors.

In doing so, he stumbles across long-secret documents outlining numerous Sinister Plots of Productivity architected by former members of the TWG, and makes a fortune when he publishes his fabulous expose on the subject, but is later killed by the assassin priests of SaintEhlers' cult..

Sure, I'd love to take a look at the code. I'm not much of a Perl coder, in fact I can't stand Perl, and if the code is as messy as you're suggesting it could be rough going ;) but I'm willing to give it a shot.

For now, basically I'd just be attempting to convert the mod for the PHP/MySQL flavor of YaBB (YaBB SE). I'll remember to ask permission if I decide to make any huge changes. :)

Edit: In case it wasn't obvious, you can just e-mail me the code via the li'l button on the side of this post.

Heh, I'd probably be too nervous to DM a game with players as experienced as SE..

At first, said Phillips, "the lead male got a stone and started bashing the hell out of it."

"Another thing they were interested in was in defecating and urinating all over the keyboard,'' added Phillips, who runs the university's Institute of Digital Arts and Technologies."

Curiously, that is actually 100% true. I read it on MSNBC the other day.

As a sidenote to Gemm, though -- in the interest of conducting meaningful research, I feel it is quite inappropriate to act physically violent toward a volunteer respondent, regardless of race or intelligence. Was punching the monkey in the spleen really necessary? He'll probably just file a complaint with the ASPCA now and file a lawsuit against TWG. I certainly hope it doesn't come to that, but that's the society we live in these days..

As everyone who has had the rest of Douglas Adams' works knows, the meaning of the universe (and life, and everything else) is 42. So really, it doesn't matter if space-time is torn apart, because the answer will likely still be 42.

But for what it's worth, I subscribe to the scar tissue theory.

I've conducted a survey, and the results are in. This particular thread is precisely 56.2% funnier due to the presence of monkeys.

Note: Research conducted amongst simian respondents between six months and five years of age, and has a +/-81% error margin.

I only wish I could play all of these modern alternatives and find out for myself if they're any good. But, having no money and no one to play with at the moment, I guess I'm out of luck. I'll just keep working on my own contemporary d20 adaptation in the meantime.

What's this? / Re: AORP?
« on: May 17, 2003, 10:20:17 PM »
It sounds great... SE was originally envisioning something like this for AORP itself I think.. sadly I think for the foreseeable future, the AORP dream may not happen if SE moves the game to TWG. But perhaps it can still happen through TWG.

I don't know about limiting to only two games, but I do think if TWG ever became a recognizable hotspot for Play-by-Post RPGs, it would be good to regular games this grows happens TWG ought to figure out SOME way that players can "guarantee" they will post frequently.

There are few things more frustrating than when players have promised to post frequently and then forget all about your game.

I've always thought it would be cool to have a consolidated spot for PbP gaming though.

Rants and Stuff / Re: TWG : When Ego's Collide
« on: May 17, 2003, 10:13:12 PM »
I don't think my Ego is big enough to warrant a faction.. besides I'm the new guy still, so its not likely I'll draw up much of a following.

I'd probably be the Eternal Outsider, trying to get his foot in the door with whichever faction happened to be kicking the most collective butt that day.

So its a custom mod then. Is there some way I could see the source changes for it?

I'm guessing that Eric's mangled post above had something to do with trying to decide whether to resurrect AORP here at TWG..

I like the forum's RPG mod -- I chose to follow the path of the Student of Honor. :) But I'm curious, where does it come from? I couldn't find it on the website dedicated to YaBB mods. Is it a Custom mod? And if so, is there any way I can get it? I'd like to do a conversion for YaBB SE.

I'm going to agree with Mr P's last comment.

Take an example : flash floods.

If i, as a DM, enact a flash flood, it is for the story. I will decide, as the DM, what effect it has - i may decide that it will involve the loss of a PC. This will be part of the story. It should not be resolved with the use of random dice - that will not necessarily give the result that would be best for the story.

The ST systems all emphasis that, it is what the ST decides is what is important. If the ST decides that picking a lock suddenly requires difficulty 9, then that is what he has decided. It gives plenty of guidelines "difficult task = 7", as opposed to the 3E mode of "picking a lock = DC 15".

It leaves much more "wiggle room" for the sake of the story.

If I feel that a character must die or be swept away by a flash flood, then that's what happens. When I'm the DM, I am in control, and as I mentioned previously, my players know that.

And what is preventing me from deciding that a particular lock is more or less difficult to pick in 3e? As in all RPG systems the rules are intended to be physical guidelines. If I say a lock is more difficult to pick, then I have a good reason for it. I'm not going to say that a simple lock is DC 30 just because I feel like it, thats poor GM'ing in any system. There's got to be a logical reason behind it. But if that particular lock is especially weak or especially strong for some reason, then I'll modify the situation appropriately.

When I am DM'ing a game, my players all know that what I say goes. There is rarely any dispute, and if there is, a simple reminder does the trick. 3e does indeed lay everything out for you, but that doesn't mean I always stick to it.

I've DM'd only 3 campaigns so far, but I am not the kind of person that likes to do everything by the book. I enjoy making changes to suit a particular story or situation. So no, I don't think my enjoyment of 3e has much to do with my lack of experience as a DM.

I will say that I have never played 1st or 2nd edition, or any other system, let alone hosted a game -- so I won't say that another one isn't better. I will however stick to my belief that 3e is perfectly worthy as a RPG system and that it in no way hinders me from making changes to it to suit my needs or preferences.

I am considering running an entirely original d20 Modern game soon -- I've never picked up the d20 modern books and I don't intend to, I don't have the money and don't feel I really need them anyway. I am already adapting the standard d20 rules to fit my contemporary setting.
