Table-Top Games / Next Wednesday's Game
« on: December 02, 2004, 04:09:26 PM »
Sprig and Fell (and anyone else who wants to join): I thought I'd post some ideas for team restrictions and scenarios for the game we plan on playing next week.

So...some ideas:

- 400 pts., 2 subteams, each subteam must have at least 150 points, 6 starting positions on board, rotating between players (A, B, C, A, B, C)

- All women

- No fig over 60 (or 50, or 70, or 40, or whatever we decide)

- For every named fig you have to have a "generic" one

- Your fig titles must be in consecutive alphabetical order (you can start at any letter, z wraps to a.)  If you have a fig starting with M you have to have an N, unless M is the last figure in your "straight."  I.E. Firelord, Green Lantern, Hellboy, Iron Man, Joker, etc.

- No two figs on your team can have the same ability showing on their dial.  If they do, each fig with that ability loses that ability until they become the only fig on the team with the ability showing.

Table-Top Games / Mutant Mayhem

So I picked up three boosters the other day...highlights include V Deadpool, Wade Wilson, and V Vertigo.

Vertigo is pretty interesting: 0 damage, perplex, incapacitate, and three ranged attacks.

Movies and TV / Do reviews matter?
« on: October 28, 2004, 11:59:14 AM »
Interesting article:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/10/28/film.do.reviews.matter.ap/index.html

It kind of follows my current thinking on reviews: if you're going to be helpful to a broad audience, it is more important in reviews to first say what a film/book/etc. is or is not--and what the implications of that are--rather than starting out on why it's good or bad.

What's this? / Diplomacy Reference Files
« on: October 18, 2004, 12:36:19 PM »
This thread is for the online Diplomacy game played by some timewasters.  I'm just going to put some of the reference files here in post form for those who can't access the yahoo group site.

Edit by SE: A complete set of the rules can be found at http://www.saintehlers.com/misc/Diplomacy/diplomacyrules.pdf

What's this? / Diplomacy, anyone?
« on: October 04, 2004, 02:39:54 PM »
I have been wanting to play a game of Diplomacy for some time now, and I'm seeing if there's sufficient interest to run one online.

I know this isn't a forum-based RPG, but the format of online Diplomacy would be fairly similar, so I thought I 'd post it here.

I think running the game online would work very well considering the game's format.  Interplayer discussion could take place through email, chat, or TWG private messages.  The drawn-out format of online forum games works fine here, as Diplomacy takes a long time to play.  I have tentatively created a Yahoo group dedicated to the game, where the (constantly changing) game board could be posted aong with player resources, announcements, deadlines, etc.

We could run it by giving a week for diplomacy between turns, after which orders would be submitted to me (the moderator) and results posted within a day or two.  And so forth until someone wins.  The time required to play wouldn't be all that great, and would mostly depend on how much you wanted to participate diplomatically.

For those of you unfamiliar with the game who might be interested, there's a TWG review for it here: http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=648

To sum it up briefly, it's a conquer the world style boardgame with a heavy emphasis on player interaction.  Very fun.

We'd need 5 players at least, although 7 is ideal.  No more than 7, though.  If enough are interested I'd be willing just to moderate.  Otherwise I'd play as well as moderate.  (With the transparency I'd build into it, there wouldn't be a conflict of interest.)

So...anyone interested?

Movies and TV / Sky Captian and the World of Tomorrow

Okay, Tomatometer doesn't have enough info yet for a rating, but I have to say that this movie - from a purely visual standpoint - looks awesome.  It could very well stink plot-wise or acting-wise, but I hope at least that the visual coolness lives up to the promise of the trailers.  If it does it could be up there on the level with 5th Element for audiovisual impact.

TW(i)G / TW(i)G RPG
« on: June 08, 2004, 02:43:20 PM »
Fell mentioned in another thread the development of the RPG side of the project.  I had an idea a while back that I thought I'd share now since the RPG stuff is being considered.

I was thinking a neat combat rule would be to have everyone declare their actions up front, and then afterwards determine initiative.  I think it would make combat feel a tad more real-time than turn-based, which in my opinion would be a good thing.

Of course, I don't know if the benefit is outweighed by the added complication, or by the fact that it's a rule that would only work for a limited portion of the game (combat) and not all situations.

Movies and TV / Troy
« on: May 14, 2004, 01:08:45 PM »
I wasn't planning on seeing this anyways, but apparently the infamous Trojan Horse plays no role in the movie.  But what pushes me away further is that the gods play no role either.  Which means that Hector loses just because he loses, not because Achilles got better divine help.  Hector's one of the only real heros of that story in my opinion.

Brad Pitt as Achilles was a brilliant casting move, I think.  I hate Achilles.

Books / A question about contemporary fantasy
« on: February 15, 2004, 03:35:12 PM »
As the thread title implies, I've got a question about contemporary fantasy.  I really haven't read too much of it and I find that I would like to become more familiar with the genre for a project I'm working on.  Particularly "high fantasy" and not magical realism.  I guess when I say contemporary I mean anything 80s to the present.

Here's my question: what works are the most representative of high fantasy literature during this period?  I'm looking for a list, around 15 books long, but you can go as low as 10 or as high as 20.  If you want to include a series (as so many fantasy books are a part of) just include the first book of the series, or the most representative book of the series in your opinion, but please mention the series along with the specific book.

Remember, I'm looking for 80s to the present, so no Tolkien, or early LeGuin, or early Moorcock, or other such stuff.  And the criterion is not the best, but the most representative of the genre.  If the best is the most representative in your opinion, that's fine.  And just use what you consider to be high fantasy.  I'm don't want to re-establish the fantasy genre classification discussion here.

I'm hoping to get a variety of opinions, and I'll value them all.  I'm especially interested in the opinions of those who have studied the area of literature concerned because they have aspirations of contributing to it.  It seems to me they'd be especially qualified to respond.  But please, all who wish to, let me know what you think.

Is there some kind of archive where we could send the games that aren't active any more, and that won't be active ever again?  It seems like Patriot City is that Way, and that Avast Ye! is probably headed there too.

It's not really a problem having them up, but nobody's really using them and, well, maybe I'm just a clean freak.

Movies and TV / MXC
« on: December 10, 2003, 03:21:36 PM »
Anyone seen this?  I was flipping channels and found it somewhere in the cable realm.  MXC stands for "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge."  It's like MST3K, but instead of voicing over old sci-fi movies, they voice over a Japanese extreme sports game show.  It's got a little too much innuendo and potty humor for my tastes, but some momemts are hilarious.  I guess the original Japanese show is called Takeshi's Castle.

I noticed that the announcement on the WFE makes no mention of length for entries.  Are there any guidelines on length?

And in case WFE isn't actually accepted computer lingo, it stands for web front end.  It's a term they used at my old work; I don't know if it is of universal use.

Everything Else / Editing Tests
« on: October 30, 2003, 08:16:41 PM »
Tomorrow I have an interview and a short test for a proofreading job.  I know that a lot of you have much more experience than I with editing and the like and have probably taken tests like this be it for employment or school.  I was just curious as to what I should look out for/what are some common traps they lay for you in these tests.  Any ideas?

Everything Else / How to eat fire.
« on: October 17, 2003, 08:16:26 PM »
The answer to the question, "how cool is that?" is actually not as cool as it sounds.  After you've learned how to eat fire, you will be surprised with the ease of it all.  The coolness lies in the words "eat" and "fire" close together.  Add a little imagination and voila!  It's more fun saying that you know how to eat fire (especially to those who don't) than actually eating fire.  It's not nearly as fun to say "I know how to put fire out with my mouth."

I've got to go now, but I will explain it later/soon, starting with how to make your torch (that's important.)
