Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Mists
« on: May 25, 2008, 05:59:51 AM »
So here's a thought on a thread that hasn't been spoken on in a while...

What if there are two kinds of mist? Only we can't tell the difference, but one pushes away from hemalurgists, and the other from allomancers. One kills, the other doesn't. The Mist spirit did deny being responsible for the killings. Yes, the idea came to me after reading Prime, but the thought had been bugging me about the mist killing only some people. Though they were all Skaa, I think.

And I don't think Reen's voice is Ruin. Preservation, maybe, but not Ruin. Maybe even just Reen.

Obsidian also chips with a sharp edge. Flakes into a really sharp edge, actually, so it makes a good non-metallic weapon. Except I think it can shatter... But that may just be me going crazy.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Pushing and Pulling: Related to Magnetism?

Given enough energy, most if not all metals will gain some magnetic tendencies, just from the electric charge. Burning iron and steel could do something like that.

Wait though; if the people exist on the axial pole of the planet, then we'd still get Alaskan weather with almost eternal days in the summer, and unending nights in the winter, with the sun staying mostly around the horizon.

Okay, I think that works. :)

That's a theory on it, yeah.

Though, with the "likes repel" idea, it could be just Ruin in the Well, which would explain why releasing it without using it would set it free, but using it would leave it captive - draining it so it can't escape.

More than one main character, that's the key. Good read though. I liked it.

Each series that Brandon Sanderson writes has a different feel to it; with the magic system, the culture, and the history all being well thought out and developed. Each book (series) is waay different, though they all have a few stylistic similarities, just because they're all by the same person.

Point!

And while the pushing and pulling could be related to magnetics, it's prolly only in appearance, and just barely at that. But how would they decide north without some form of decided compass? What makes the Northern Dominance the northern one if they didn't have any idea what compasses or magnetic poles were? No stars to guide by.

Order and Entropy, Life and Death, Creation and Destruction, Good and Evil (already ruled out)

Personally, I'm leaning towards Order and Entropy. Or Creation/Destruction. Well okay, I can even see it being all three.

And I agree with Comatose, Ruin is trapped by Preservations power. That's why it had to be Vin or someone else not overly Hemalurgical to hear the Well's pulsing, but not be burned away by the power of the well. So it would be the power of Preservation TLR touched, since that's what held Ruin in the Well.

How would the Ashmounts keep away the Deepness? They seem to only blot out the sun, so unless the sun was changing to a red giant or going nova or something, then they don't seem to make much of a difference. Also, since the death of TLR they've started getting more active, and later, if I understand correctly, start causing earthquakes and all that rot. So what if they're actually part of the Deepness? Like it's a destruction from the depths of the earth. Something.

So back on Hemalurgy then, is it safe to say that Hemalurgy is in opposition to the power that held Ruin in the well? Since she had to remove her earring when she entered. That could also be why the Inq. couldn't free it. Prolly weren't strong enough to open that door either.

If the power of Preservation was what was keeping Ruin, or the Well Spirit trapped in the well, then releasing the power could be what let it go, but using the power for Preservation would have kept it there, like what the Lord Ruler did.

Wild Idea - Is the creature in the well Ruin? What if it's neither Ruin nor Preservation, but creature of destruction trapped there by Preservation, that Ruin simply wanted to release? So it's a game between the two, since Ruin wants change, but Preservation wants to resist change, but neither of them is trapped.

There is a lot of heat; the skaa sweat in the heat of the red sun, but don't dare to wipe away the sweat. Something like that.

But if life only exists at the poles, I assume we're talking about the magnetic ones, which would mean they're on a pretty sharp tilt from the spin axis, otherwise we'd end up with Alaskan type seasons; times of no light, or all light.

And if the Ashmounts are more active, causing earthquakes and all that, then they could be part of Ruin (as I just mentioned in The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread) kept at bay by the LR.
