Music / Cool Lyrics the 2nd
« on: April 24, 2005, 12:36:32 AM »
Girl I already told you I love you; I already loaned you my ring.
So how come just when everything was going so good, you gotta bring up this commitment thing?
You say you ain't gettin' 100% of my love and I admit it's true.  But long before today  I gave most of it away - so there's hardly any left for you.

I'm saving 4% for a dear, dear friend friend who's lying sick in bed.
And 8% for a pal of mine who fell and hit her head.
6% for my Springsteen tapes; 8% for my car,
12 for the good old U.S.A, and 5% for my guitar!

But I can give you 8% of my love, 8% of my love.
8 hundredths of the time you're the only girl I'm dreaming of.
Yeah yeah yeah! 8% of my heart, 8% of my soul.
Just point-oh-eight, but girl you're great - you're the only one that makes me whole.

(But when you add it up, that only comes to 43 - fourty-three!
That should leave 57 all for me - all for me!)

I'm sorry hon, that's not the situation.
I've just begun, don't spoil my concentration.

Now there's 9% for Miss Snodgrass who tutors me in science.  And add another 10% for the New York football Giants. 4% for my mom and dad, 8% for my bike.  18% for my leather jacket baby - if you don't like it you can take a hike!

'Cause you still got 8% of my love! 8% of my love.
8 hundredths of the time you're the only girl I'm dreaming of.
Ye-aaaa-ah.
8% of my love.  8% will have to do.
I already went and spent 92%, but I'm saving all the rest for you.
I already went and spent 92% but I'm saving all the rest for you.

Music / Moby concert
« on: April 12, 2005, 01:30:57 AM »
So Moby is actually playing Salt Lake on his Hotel tour, and I just bought a ticket.  Just one, alas, since J.T. is going to be out of town on April 27th.  Just my luck.  Anyone else want to go with?

Rants and Stuff / Grumpy things go here
« on: March 31, 2005, 09:52:50 PM »
Seems to be a lot of grumpiness on the board.  If you're feeling grumpy, bitter, angry, whatever, post about it here.  Be specific.  Be vauge.  Whatever you like.

I'm bitter because I have no spare time whatsoever now, I get home after work to find that you guys have all been online apparently all day posting novels that I don't even have time to read because I've got too much to do.

And I freaking hate people who can barely speak and understand ENGLISH, but expect me to give them useful tech support. Sorry, I don't speak Ukranian, why don't you hire someone who actualy speaks English?

Writing Group / Likeable Characters
« on: March 28, 2005, 10:47:08 AM »
Actually, I'm more worried about likeable heroines at the moment.  Girls.... (ok, and guys), what makes a heroine likeable instead of annoying?

Movies and TV / The New Doctor Who
« on: March 06, 2005, 03:24:30 PM »
So even though the pilot isn't (as far as I know) scheduled to air until late March, a copy of the pilot was leaked out onto the lovely, blessed Internet, and i have now seen it.

As a fairly big Who fan, I was pleased with the how it turned out over all - I'll have to get over things like seeing computer animation in a dr. who episode, (and 1996-level animation at that), but Rose seems to be more than acceptable as a companion.  Her screams aren't quite up to par, so she's obviously going to be more of an Ace, and less of, say, a Sarah Jane.  She'll make Mary Sue's out of all of us blonde twenty-somethings who'd love an invitation to roam around the galaxy with the Doctor.

I think Christopher Eccleston will do ok, but I've always had a problem looking at his face.  There just looks like there should be something wrong with it, like he has angles in the wrong places or something.

There's a little confusion on parts of the backstory to this - and there are some rumors that the leaked copy isn't the final version that they'll be airing, so maybe those will clear up.  For example, when he's in the apartment, the Doctor looks in the mirror and implies (by making comments about his reflection) that he's very very recently regenerated. But then later on in the episode, it's implied that he's spent quite a few adventures in his present shape.

The Doctor has some great Doctor-ish lines, and the TARDIS got a remodeling job (which saddens me), but hopefully we will avoid some of the horrific cannon pitfalls that occured with the 90's tv movie - like making the Eighth Doctor proclaim that he was half-human, the Tardis interior into a faux-cathedral that contains the Eye of Harmony (which is nuts since in the series it was on Gallifrey), and if the Master shows up again, hopefully he'll live up to series standards.

Movies and TV / Chasing archetypes
« on: February 23, 2005, 12:41:13 PM »
So last night while watching the Dukes of Hazzard ("The Ghost of General Lee", excellent episode,)  I realized that the Dukes' relationship with Roscoe is very.... well, Tom and Jerry, for lack of a better term.  I thought to myself that there has to be some sort of archetype that includes the endless chase.

This particular episode brought it to me because the characters themselves were discussing it.  (Coupla' thugs steal the General Lee, drive it into the pond, everyone things Bo and Luke are dead. Hilarity ensues.)

But all the examples of the "endless chase" that I can think of are... well Warner Brothers' cartoons.  Roadrunner, Bugs and Elmer, etc. I can't really think of any literary references to this kind of thing. Other than perhaps A Series of Unfortunate Events.  (And refering to that as literary in the wrong circles might get me shot.)

I think the very nature of books doesn't lend itself to this particular archetype, so we'd have to go back to myths and folk tales. (Looks hopefully at stacer and Brenna).

I have more to say on this, but I'll be late for my job interview.  More wild ideas from Megan coming later this week, if anyone wants to write their next paper on how Daisy Duke embodies the Virgin/Whore dichotomy.

Music / Song Lyrics Analysis
« on: February 12, 2005, 11:45:15 PM »
I don't know if this will catch on with you guys.  Why?  Well, because if you think about it, it's uncool to admit that you don't "get" the lyrics to almost any given song.  Whatever.  If nothing else, you guys can help answer my questions.

So.  Fastball.  What exactly does "I'll be the rain falling on your fire escape" mean?  I don't get the metaphor.

And Ookla, Brenna, Mistress of Darkness - is it ok to say "And I may not be the man you want me to," or should there be a "be" at the end of that line?  Obviously the be is implied, but every time I hear the song it makes me do a kind of mental double take.

Writing Group / I can write better crap than that!
« on: February 10, 2005, 12:06:30 AM »
So here's my current beef.  I like romances.  Most romances, however, bore the crap out of me.  Do I actually like romances then?  Well I like some things about them.  And there are a few I like totally - 5 or 6 total that I've read in my life, perhaps.  But there are so many thousands of millions of them out there that are complete and total garbage.  And as I throw another book across the room in disgust (used paperback, gimme a break), I say to myself that I could write a better book than that in my SLEEP.

And I really want to try. But ok - say I do it, I write a really good, gripping, well-written romance - would anyone buy it?  Or does the market for that sort of thing LIKE tha badly-written trash that they publish?  And do they publish it because they know it will sell - because that's what the market likes, or just because there is no one out there writing GOOD romances.

Would you all think I sold out if I tried writing romances instead of fantasy (ok, it would probably be a fantasy based romance because that's what I like to read...)

Books / How do book sales work?
« on: January 27, 2005, 02:07:18 PM »
So I was thinking of putting in an Amazon preorder for Elantris and another book or two that happen to come out in April - is that best for sales?  I wouldn't have thought of it but for Mustard's remark that it was better to buy at Deseret than Seagull because of the pushiing-books-for-quota thing.

So EUOL - is it better to do Amazon, or wait until you do a local signing?

Books / Fell off the wagon
« on: January 16, 2005, 08:09:14 PM »
Gah, amazon and half.com are taunting me.  "Buy more booooooks!" they whisper in my ear.  "More boooooks!"

"No!" I cry, "I already spent $40 on books at half.com this month!"

"No, no - not enough!  MORE books."

I was doing so well for years, I'd stopped buying books and stuck to libraries.  Now I'm back on the book buying binge again, and I don't know how to stop other than abject poverty.

Help?

Movies and TV / Dukes of Hazzard
« on: January 09, 2005, 04:01:53 AM »
Ok, since I've still got 10 more episodes to go through I think I'm going to start a fresh thread in an appropriate location.

We're watching some of the special features right now, and ...... John Schneider (Bo) is really really hot as an adult.  In fact he's much cuter now than he was in the show.

That's all for now.

I can totally see why everyone loved this show.  It rocks.

Everything Else / Mistaken Identity
« on: January 07, 2005, 03:47:30 AM »
So about two years ago I got a random mass email from some nice people named tim and shawn smith.  They sent out this nice email about how they moved and gave their new address and phone number and some nice pictures of their new house.

Apparently, from the address line, this was supposed to go to a Michele Kauffman, whose email address is similar to mine.  I shot back a nice email to them letting them know that they'd gotten Michele's email address wrong, and apart from some other mass replies from their friends, that was that.  About 6 months later I got a few more emails from these people, sent another email, they stopped.

So it's been over a year now, and I get this:

Hi girls-
I spoke with Heidi earlier today.  For some reason, my email occasionally does not work.  Just wanted to reconnect as I'm thinking, in particular, about those families who must be enjoying their babies this season.
May your New Years continue the rich blessings these little ones have started!

love,
Shawn

p.s. Any word yet on Peters babe?

So.  Since they obviously can't remember Michele's email, what should I write to them this time?

(Also - if anyone can find me the link in yahoo to search the yahoo directory, maybe I can find Michele's email and forward it to her....)

Rants and Stuff / Employees, as a general rule.....
« on: January 05, 2005, 09:31:01 PM »
So those of you on the board who are under 18, I put it to you.

If you are in high school and you get a part time job, what part of the teenage brain makes you think you can show up late, not do the work you're being paid to do, and disobey rules, and then NOT understand when you're fired?

Rants and Stuff / Is IRC dead?
« on: December 29, 2004, 09:19:03 PM »
We have Trillian set up at my job so we can use IRC chatrooms to have all our agents in there. Then they can chat or whatever and can get a hold of us, whatever.

I'm so sad though, because NO ONE here with the exception of a maybe three people ever used IRC or mIRC or anything.  I pinged my channel just now because I was bored and then had to spend 15 minutes explaining what a ping was and why it's relevant to anything.

(no lag here - we're on the company's server so my ping was pointless.)
