Brandon Sanderson / Composite list of questions to be answered in HoA
« on: September 23, 2008, 12:10:33 AM »
There has been a LOT of MB3 speculation and debate over the past few weeks, and it's only a matter of time until those questions are answered.  Thus, I thought as a fun game, we'd compile a list of questions that we hope are answered.  We can then make a post with all those questions, and everyone can give (the briefest possible) answers to each of them.  Then, once the book is out, we can compare scores and see who predicted the most (as well as hopefully get answers from Brandon on what wasn't answered).

So, I'll start with some questions I can think of, but please add ones you can.  Try and word your questions in a way that they can be easily answered with just a few words or a sentence at the most.  Maybe after a week or so we can compile them all and then have people 'vote'.

1) Who is the Hero of Ages?
2) Do inquisitors use allomancy?
3) Who is the Mist spirit?
4) What is the Deepness?
5) Why does the Mist kill?
6) What role do the Ashmounts play?
7) Is Reen's voice actually Ruin?
8) What was in the Well of Ascension?
9) Which character's die?
10) What are Koloss?
11) What are Kandra?
12) Where did Kell get the 11th metal?
13) Why can Vin draw upon the mist?
14) Why can Vin pierce copper clouds?
15) Where will the final battle take place?

That's all I can think of now, but I'm sure there are plenty.  Please add your own, or if any of those aren't worthy point them out as well.  I'll try and keep this post edited with a concrete list of questions people post.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: I have to say, I'm impressed.

I'm in the same boat as Miyabi, in that I just started reading WoT after hearing about Brandon being chosen as the one to finish it (I'm about 150 pages into the first one).

It's kind of ironic too, because I'm reading a copy of The Eye of the World that I purchased the week that Robert Jordan passed away, at one of Brandon's signings.   Brandon was out here in Denver and stayed for a good hour and a half after the signing to chat with a small handful (less than 5) of his fans who stayed around.  He was answering all kinds of questions, and one thing he talked about was the Wheel of Time series and the impact it (and Jordan) had on him.  I'd say he spent 15-20 minutes discussing the series with us.  This was of course before he knew he would be finishing it.  The way Brandon spoke of the series more than convinced me that it would be something I would enjoy.  Thus, I went home with a copy of The Eye of the World.  I'm not very far into it, but so far it has been quite good.

Buy or Sell?
Vin hooks up with a Koloss and they have blue super-super-strong Mistborn babies!! (Okay, that is really gross)

Sell.  I don't think there are any Koloss babies.

Buy or Sell?
Vin's mother is the Hero of Ages

I believe that some people already have signed copies of MB3   ;)

If you want a signed copy, go to a signing.  They are very very worth it.  Brandon is a really awesome person.  Lots of people in his type of position say they enjoy engaging with fans, but with Brandon, you really get the feeling that he genuinely does.  He's always willing to share advice or answer questions.  I've been to a couple signings now and all have been great.

Alendi actually survived and now lives on in the form of Gemmel, Kelsier's trainer/teacher/guy.

Sell.  If Alendi was Gemmel I would think he would of had a hand in the whole overthrowing of TLR.

Buy or Sell?
There is no atium stash.  All the "missing" atium was actually what TLR was burning each time he went into his little hut to regain his youth and continue living forever.

He could always include it in the Potteresque epilogue

:)

Too far away for the book, seeing as HoA takes place one year after then end of WoA. So, while a child of Vin and Elend's may have an impact on the future, I doubt we'll see it. Besides, I personally believe that one of the two will die, so that makes the having a child thing rather difficult.

That makes it seem plausible.  They do get married in the second book, and one year is more than 9 months away.

From what I have seen, you do more than any other author that I have followed in terms of communicating with your fans before, during and after the writing process. What, if anything, can we look forward to you sharing with us while you work to complete this book? Also, will you be doing annotations of the chapters once you are done writing this book?

He was asked this at the signing in Denver.

He basically said he isn't going to do the annotations, but he does want to release a much more in depth "the making of" type of book.  He said if it was something he did/could do, it would contain things such as which sections are Jordan's and which are Brandon's.

At the signing in Denver today Brandon said he's going to release the first chapter on his website soon.  He also plans on adding a few more after that.

In the end (if I remember correctly) he said there will be 4 chapters on his site, which will show all the major viewpoints except one.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: August 03, 2008, 12:44:26 AM »
I'm not sure where else to put this as it somewhat pertains to all of these threads, but I think it will fit here.

I just got back from the signing Brandon did in Denver today and I asked him about these threads.  I think people might find the following information interesting (hence why I'm posting it).

He was asked if he read these threads.  He said he did at first, but since has stopped visiting them.  When he was reading them, he had to strongly resist the urge to post corrections to things that people would find out later.  However, once the book is out (and people have a chance to read it), he plans on stopping by and adding where necessary.

I think all of that is pretty well assumed by many.  However, the next part is interesting.

He then added that the "bumps" (the part of each chapter in italics at the beginning of them) are written by a character who "knows everything."  Thus, they go in depth into some of the more finer details of what is speculated in these threads.  Such as how allomancy works or (these were exact examples) "Why everyone in the world doesn't have black lung disease" and "why the world got hotter instead of cooler in the nuclear winter scenario" (ie all the ash blocking out the sun).   He seemed to imply that the bumps contained information about the series and world that were written in a scientific or almost encyclopedic way.

Other interesting things to note, is that he said in the next week or so, he will put up the first chapter of the book on his site, doing more after.  In the end, there will be 4 chapters, which will give you one from each of the viewpoints (except one I believe he said).

Finally, he had 3 copies of Hero of Ages complete with cover art and text.  It was pretty amazing being that close to all the answers.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: HoA compiled. *SPOILER POTENTIAL*****

8 - Vin - She will again discover more about herself and her powers.  Her having access to Hemalurgy will be heavily relied upon as they learn how it is used.  -There is no basis other than my theorizing on this next part.-  She will discover she also has Feruchumical abilities which will lead to her being able to unify the powers.

I think they all sound pretty good, except I disagree with this one.

Feruchemy is hereditary among Terrismen.  I think it's safe to say Vin's parents were a nobleman and Skaa.

Now, she might gain the powers through Hemalurgy, but I think that is unlikely as well.  We know that Inquisitors are made with Hemalurgy, we know it's a 'messy' process requiring a sacrifice of someone.  I just don't see Vin sacrificing someone to make herself stronger.

Yes, it could happen by accident, or by the person's request (such as Sazed asking Vin to sacrifice himself to give her the power) but I think that's really really unlikely.

Brandon Sanderson / Denver signing this weekend
« on: July 30, 2008, 11:29:35 PM »
As Brandon has said on his blog, he'll be doing a signing in Denver on Saturday.  Is anyone else from here planning on being there?

I wonder if Brandon would be the best author to include a gay character in his story.  I don't know the answer to this, but although he is a great writer he may have no idea how a gay character would operate as opposed to a straight character.  It would be the same as trying to write a novel about the FBI without having any knowledge into it's structure or operations.

He did an amazing job with Vin.  Even though she's a young woman with a very rough upbringing and a paranoid nature (initially).  I'm sure if this was something Brandon did at some point, he would be able to learn what he needed to so that he could make it work.

74
IMO him forcing a character into that role for the sake of having a character in that role could take away from the story.

I wouldn't want him to make one of his characters gay just to have a gay character or be 'politically correct' or for any other reason.  However, if he decided that one of his characters was gay, because the character is gay, I would be totally ok with that.

I wasn't attempting to 'force' anything here.  I am just that I would enjoy the prospect and I think that he would do a very good job if he did.

I suppose that wording was a little harsh.  I don't mean to say that you were suggesting that.

I also think Brandon would do an excellent job with this, as from what I've seen he does an excellent job with everything.

I just feel like if something isn't "natural" to a character, it's very very very difficult to make the story flow well.  I feel like the best stories are written by the authors in which the characters are real to them.  They don't really decide what should happen and how things should be, everything just kind of comes to them from some mysterious parallel universe and they simply write down that story as it takes place.

(Note: when I say "natural" here, I don't mean to imply "natural" in the way that some people say homosexuality isn't "natural".  But rather "natural" in the sense of what fits best with the character, like Vin being female instead of male)

75
I love Brandon's story's and for that reason, wouldn't want him to make a character gay.

IMO him forcing a character into that role for the sake of having a character in that role could take away from the story.

That being said, I would have no problem reading one of Brandon's stories where a character was gay.

I (naturally) don't know exactly where Brandon's ideas and stories come from, but from reading his posts (here and on the blog) and annotations, he seems to let his stories just sort of play out.

A good example of this is Vin.  Brandon said that (I believe) in Mistborn Prime, Vin was a guy.  Then he just decided that he should try with Vin as a female, and immediately decided that is how it should be.

I think this 'natural' way of deciding what characters are and aren't is by far a better method then starting off with "I want to write a story with a female protagonist."

I wouldn't want him to make one of his characters gay just to have a gay character or be 'politically correct' or for any other reason.  However, if he decided that one of his characters was gay, because the character is gay, I would be totally ok with that.
