Books / Leather bound TGS copies
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:42:22 PM »
When Brandon mentioned these I jumped on it and preordered one.  Yesterday I got an email from the company saying:

"I regret to inform you that 'The Gathering Storm' was removed from our website this morning because the publisher delivery date is not available. With that said, you will not be able to re-submit an order with us for this title. When the book is available, it will be placed on the website again."

Did anyone else get the same?  Does anyone know anything about this?  I was really looking forward to it.

He wrote a 662 page book that people are in love with that doesn't have a climax.  That seems like breaking new ground to me.

In the second book, Zane gives Vin some atium that isn't all atium.

We know with Vin when she has other metal reserves, she can sense how much of it she has inside her.  There are cases where she recalls the reserve of power being massive.

She swallowed that bead when her and Zane went after Cett.  Wouldn't she of realized it was a very small reserve?

I'll have to admit that I am very blind to all kinds of symbolism in books I read (I typically just enjoy the story) but after a few friends brought up some connections in Mistborn it was hard to miss.

I don't know about the Joseph Smith stuff, but I think it can be wildly agreed upon that Kell is very similar to Jesus.

Not to say he's a 100% copy (I don't think Jesus would kill noblemen), but there are lots of similarities.  There is a religion based upon him and his death (sacrifice) and his later resurrection (In the form of OrSeur).  He's in his 30s, and has a mysterious life that we don't know much about before that.  He was killed by a spear which became a symbolic part of the religion based around him.  He operated with a close group of friends who greatly looked up to him and later preached his worldview, etc.  I know I'm leaving lots of parallels out, but I can get more from a friend of mine who first made me aware of the connection (She probably has a list 4x this size).

I don't know much about Mormonism, but I was told that the scene in the third book where Preservation "dies" and leaves behind a body is very symbolic when taken in that religious context.  Is that true?

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but I asked Brandon about Hoid in AMoL at a signing.

He basically said he thought about it briefly, but decided against it, since Hoid is for his works, and while it would be kind of neat, he feels like that would be inserting too much of his stuff into what should be almost all Jordan's.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Miniatures Now Available
« on: December 16, 2008, 12:33:45 AM »
I have to admit I'm a little disappointed.

I don't play any of the games that use miniatures, so I don't know what defines quality, and I'd imagine that getting a high level of realistic detail in something so small is very very difficult, and for the purpose (of using these in games like that) they are great.

However, for someone like me, who loves Mistborn, and loves merchandise, I just don't see myself buying these.  The Koloss and Inquisitor don't look that bad, but the head/face/hair on Kell and Vin just doesn't look that great at all to me.

If I played any of those games, I'm sure I'd buy them, but in this case, I'd be much happier to pay 5x what these cost (or whatever it would end up being)  for a nice (metal of course) detailed figure that is maybe 3x-4x that size.  That is the kind of thing I'd invest in to set on my desk.

The series starts this weekend, but right now you can download the first 30 minutes of the show for free on iTunes.

It's 100% free and worth watching if you are interested what the show will be like.

It's pretty apparent from this first 30 minutes that shows they are radically changing some massive parts of the story.

I don't remember who it was, but someone was dead set on Reen's voice not being Ruin, to the point of where they didn't even want it discussed.  I was pretty sure it was Ruin.  :)

This is a MB3 spoiler thread, not an Alcatraz one, so I won't get into details, but after just finishing the 2nd book, I think a shard reference could be there.  The graph that explained the Talents is surprisingly similar to the Alomancy one.

The B&N out by me still doesn't have the copy I pre-ordered.  I hope it comes by the end of the week.  They said when they get it I should have an email within an hour.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Book 3 Was In Store Days Before Release!
« on: October 14, 2008, 09:04:00 PM »
I preordered a copy at my local B&N early last week.  Went by today to pick it up and they didn't have it.

They said they got 2 copies in on the 9th, and both were gone.  At first I was a little upset, since I preordered one, but it sounds like those two copies were also preorders, so it's at least good that there is some local interest in his books.

Though, they did said the local distribution place had many copies, and has mine ready to ship to the store, and they would let me know when it comes in, "probably some time this week".  I'm a little confused as to why they didn't just throw it in with the other two, but hopefully it will come in time so that I can help out the first week sales.

Does the final version say exactly what happened to Marsh?  The ARC left it ambiguous.

I tried to email brandon this but it wasn't working:

Brandon,

I was at the Barnes and Noble at the mall at turtle creek in jonesboro, arkansas where I live on Saturday October 11th and saw the mistborn book 3 on the shelf, I asked them why but they didn't give me an answer.

I wanted to let you know because I have ordered a signed copy and I have to wait for it, so I don't think it's fair for them to have it for sale days early.

The mall listing is here:
http://www.mallatturtlecreek.com/storelistings.html

This has been the case for pretty much all of Brandon's books since I started reading them (before MB2).

From what I understand, the "release dates" for books are mostly just suggestive.  It's more letting people know that it will be available that day, but could be found a few days earlier.  Some stores adhere strictly to the date, but others do not.

It seems rather rare that you have a book like Harry Potter, which has extremely strict guidelines on when it can come out, simply because of the size of the group of readers of the book and the hype built up around it.

In general, it seems that stores put things on shelves well before the 'release date' if they can.  If I remember correctly, the first Alcatraz book was on some shelves for as much as a month before the official date.

Books / NYT Best Sellers List
« on: October 10, 2008, 08:58:17 PM »
I know there are a lot of informed readers here, as well as people with some "inside" knowledge into the industry.

With Brandon's MB3 being released next week, I've been looking at the NYT Best Sellers list, since I know his goal (as well as I'd assume most authors share) is to reach that list.  I know he said he came really close with MB2 (with around 2,000 books sold if I remember).

I really hope Brandon makes it this time, as I think it's pretty much agreed upon that he will when AMoL comes out, but it would be nice to see him do it with his own series before that.

Right now, Amazon is placing MB3 (as just a presale) around #350 in terms of sales for "books" with #2 in fantasy series and #3 in epic fantasy.  I think that looks well, as I'm sure those numbers will improve (at least, the 350) after the book comes out.  From what I've seen, his books typically sit at around #3,000 to #25,000 in overall sales.   To me that says there is a lot of interest in book 3, as there should be.

In terms of judging this kind of thing, is the NYT list still the best source?  To me it seems like it doesn't quite work right.  For instance, I know Brisingr sold a TON of copies the past few weeks, but I don't see it anywhere on the NYT list.  That doesn't seem right to me.

I've also heard of a few cases where a book sold more copies, than another, but didn't beat it for the #1 slot.

Does anyone know more about how the NYT list works?  What do you think Brandon's chances are of making it?  When will we know if he does?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Alcatraz 2 Up on Amazon!

The UPS guy just came by 10 minutes ago and dropped off the copy I preordered from Amazon.  I can't wait to plow through it.
