Brandon Sanderson / Re: Are any of Brandon's fans also Redditors?
« on: April 13, 2010, 11:40:55 PM »
If anyone is curious I tallied it up and it looks like I'll be doing 23 copies of Mistborn (about 1/2 those I'm going to do the full trilogy I think), 6 copies of Elantris, 19 copies of Warbreaker and a handful of Alcatraz. Those are being sent to 48 different addresses.  I'm pretty excited.  I can't wait till people read their books and let me know how much they enjoyed them.

Not even 24 hours and if you count the people I'm sending books out too plus the ones who've said they already or will buy/check out one of the books it looks like Brandon already has over 60 new readers :)

Not bad IMO.

If anyone is curious I've gotten quite a nice reply so far.  Lots of deserving people have replied.  Here is a sample:

Quote
"First off, I think it's really wonderful of you to do this. I'm sure I'm kind of late to the party, but if you're still offering, I would love to have a copy of Elantris (or, really, any of them).

As for why, it's fairly simple. Stories keep me sane. No matter what's going on in the real world, a good read can keep everything together and can give just that little bit of necessary escape. On top of that, I've hit a sort of off period with my reading lately; I've started plenty of books, but they keep being more about the words than the story, and I'd like a break from that. I read the Elantris prologue that you posted, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

Even if the books go to other people, thank you for spreading the book-love. It's incredibly kind of you <3"

I also found out that http://www.bookdepository.com/ will do free shipping anywhere so I can do some for the many international people that have asked.

It also seems that several people have gone out and bought copies on their own after seeing this.

It feels good to share :)

Peter, would it be possible maybe if I pick someone at Random for you to get Brandon to sign/personalize a set of Mistborn/Warbreaker/Elantris (Probably paperbacks since that way I can send books to more people) and send them to someone?  I'll of course cover cost of shipping and the books.

I've shared Brandon's stories with so many people I knew that I decided to try doing so with people I don't know.  Thus, I started this post on Reddit

If anyone here is on Reddit would you mind upvoting that so it gets seen and possibly writing a comment about how much you enjoy the books or which you would choose/recommend?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Suvudu Cage Match Finals, Rand vs Jaime
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:59:22 PM »
I'm pretty disapointed by the write up at Suvudu for this match.  (And not just because Rand loses)

They obviously aren't that familiar with Rand's abilities/world.  He wouldn't of played into the trap so easily and certainly would of summoned a gateway once it came (or a number of other things that would of protected him from it).

I hope Jaime gets owned in Brandon's writeup (IMO it should be from Hoid's perspective as from what i understand that would somewhat almost fit).

The comments on GRRM's blog are interesting.

Very few of them mention Brandon's characters and most are just pulling characters from ASOIAF for the other side.  I'd say about 30% of them at least say "Just fight in a stedding and..."

That's pretty amusing.  Basically they are just saying "Take away all the advantages the other side has and then our side stands a chance"

I really hope Rand wins this.  GRRM has a huge dedicated following but WoT has so many fan sites to tap for votes.

Brandon Sanderson / Suvudu Cage Match Finals, Rand vs Jaime
« on: April 03, 2010, 04:30:51 AM »
If anyone has been following the Suvudu Cage Match it's down to the final two putting Rand Al'Thor vs Jaime Lannister.   I was really hoping that Kvothe beat out Jaime but he just couldn't quite do it.

George R. R. Martin proposed an interesting idea on his blog.  He said the fight should be "Trial of Seven" from Westeros Tradition, where the heroes will fight along side 6 of their pals each.  He suggested he could take any six from his works and stories, and Rand be given a choice of 6 allies from the group of Jordan's and Brandon's works.   Kind of a fun idea.

That being said, which 6 would you pair up with Rand?

This would be my choice:

Sazed - Post HoA Sazed has to be a force to reckon with IMO
Vin - If she can be the same as the last time we saw her (end of HoA) then she could probably almost do this fight herself
Lord Ruler - This guy didn't survive so long because he was easy to kill
Vasher - With his collect of Breath's and his sword of course
Alcatraz - Chances are GRRM's picks would rely on a couple 'unbreakable' magical artifacts.
Matt - Can't lose with the dark one's own luck

I had a couple that almost made my list.  They were:

Lews Therin - Might as well have him and Rand.  All Rand's abilities and potential but he knows how to use 'em
Lightsong - I really don't think this fight would be in the bag and all 6 wouldn't be needed, might as well bring along some comic relief to make the fight more fun to watch.

I know people on the forum like this kind of thing, so who would you pick?

I've just about given up on local bookstores.  I like to support them, but they never have what I want.

I've been to three places now (2 B&N and a Borders)  looking for the paperback copy of warbreaker and haven't had any luck.  None of them had it.  They weren't sold out, it wasn't in the back, they just didn't get them yet.  I could of ordered one on amazon and had it by now, it's really bad that these places don't.

They at least had a few copies of the Mistborn books (including the paperback sets) and one had 2 copies of the hardcover warbreaker, but the selection was generally quite bland.  I'm pretty sure that with how many of Brandon's books I buy a year I alone would almost be able to cover their quota.

It's getting to the point where I'm just about to stop checking and getting everything from amazon.

I've driven more than anyone to visit his signings and release events (or so he wrote in my Warbreaker copy).

I've purchased well over 70 copies of his books and personally convinced about 50 people to read his books. (only one of those wasn't blown away by them, and he really just hasn't gotten around to finishing Mistborn yet)

He once compared me to a "drug pusher" of his writing :)

I pretty much try and be a fan by sharing with others.

Edit:  I also set out in August 2008 to start reading the Wheel of Time series with the purpose of being able to read Brandon's contribution to the series.  On Saturday I finally finished Knife of Dreams and started the new one.  That's over a year (14-15 months) of all my precious reading time (minus a break for Warbreaker and Alcatraz) spent reading a series (and about it's 1880 characters) just so I could read Brandon's new book in context (not that I haven't enjoyed it).

Edit 2: The universe recognizes my level of fandom which has lead to both times Brandon has raffled out a Mistborn 3 manuscript at a signing/release (WoA and Warbreaker) someone who came with me has won it.  That plus the ARC Brandon gave me personally when he came to Denver for a signing (several months before the official release) means that I think our group has more 'generations' of Hero of Ages than anyone else except for Brandon.

Brandon Sanderson / Buying several things from the store
« on: December 06, 2009, 02:12:12 AM »
I wanted to buy several books shipped to different locations for presents this year.  Is there an easy way to do this through the store (i.e. someone I could just email and set it all up through then pay xxx in paypal?)

Brandon Sanderson / NYT Best seller list

It'd be awesome to see Brandon at #1, but based on his latest twitter/FB post it looks like it might be hard to get past Dan Brown.  Which sales do/don't count?  I've heard from some sources that amazon sales don't count.  What about preorders?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Table of Allomantic Metals *Spoilers*
« on: October 15, 2009, 10:01:15 PM »
Sorry to hear about your frustrating experience, Phaz. It owuld be nice if there were something we could do about that...

Would it be possible to change the shipping address?  I can email the order info, address it's shipping to and the one I'd prefer.

Overall, it's not a huge deal.  I'm sure I'll get the print and very much enjoy it, and hopefully still get a low number even if it wasn't as low as it could of been.

Also, as per Brandon's post... I am willing to buy just about anything you guys put out, especially things that are collectors/limited edition type stuff.

I'd certainly buy 'special' copies of the books (Like the seemingly impossible to get a hold of leather bound WoT copies).  The nightblood sword would be a sure thing, however it came, though with a sheath would be cool.

Other things I think would be neat are coins made of different metals from the Mistborn world with the symbol for the metal on the back.  A fairly large (like a small, thickish, clock) metal disc of the allomantic table with each symbol made in the metal it represents (or something close to it).  Prints of maps from the books, etc.  A set of occulator glasses with different colored lenses to put on display would be pretty cool as well, same thing with some inquisitor/koloss spikes.

Another thing that would be nice is buying all brandon's works as a signed/personalized 'set'.   I tend to lend out copies all the time and it would be kind of nice to pick up a couple of those to restock the shelves on the bookcase with a little message from Brandon knowing that's what they are used for.

Paypal is horrible.... took me at least 8 minutes to get my order in after it kept trying to force me to choose certain things (such as payment method/card) that I didn't want to choose.  Then after changing the shipping address to where I work (where someone is always able to sign/receive something) it defaulted it back to another address.....

Anyone know if there is someone I can contact to get the shipping info changed?  It's not a huge deal but would certainly save a hassle and a bit of driving.

That was quite frustrating.

Were you ever find anything out?  Deciding if I should keep trying for this or just preorder one of the signed/numbered ones.

Thanks.  I ordered mine as soon as I saw the announcement right after Brandon made it on twitter, but didn't get this message till yesterday.
