Writing Group / Re: Getting Published
« on: May 27, 2004, 02:59:27 AM »
David Brin told me to get a degree in BUT English if I wanted to be a writer.

He also said to wander around and knock on a new door once a month, introduce myself and find out what they do there.

Did the first, but never actually got around to the second. And I'm an editor nowadays anyway... (Finally working! Yay!)

That's cool. I love hearing about things like this. I also had fun reading through the forum thread that rediscovered her.

Reminds me of how I read through the archived St. Paul Staronline forum thread "Minnesota Governor Election" when Jesse Ventura won. It was amazing to see how things evolved over the months.

My favorite author is Lois McMaster Bujold. Second comes CJ Cherryh.

van Vogt's Slan is my favorite book, but most of his writing lacks an emotional aspect Bujold has which is what I really love.

And I'm pretty much anti-scholarly.

It'll probably be a while before I'm up to another car trip like that, and no telling when I'll have money to spend on some other form of travel...

I had a good time though. It was great seeing everyone again!

I just ate Korean food with my family (at Sam Hawk) but I could definitely eat more tomorrow... hahaha

Yeah, it's been a while! I poked my head into TLE Thursday night at 9:00, saw Kristy and Mr. M for a couple minutes. But my family was waiting in the car so I took off quickly.

I have no preferences as far as food or whatever... I'll definitely be to TLE Saturday morning. I guess I'm not up to going to SLC Friday though...I'm doing enough driving already. ^_^;;

Do I know Kaylynne?

Check a science-heavy science fiction book on how to do it. See for example the acknowledgments at the beginning of Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer (just swing a look in the bookstore). It's the one part of the book I can recommend for sure.

I should be able to go to TLE Saturday morning. Unless Brandon forces me to do something else.

Everything Else / Um... I'm coming out for graduation. Get together?
« on: April 21, 2004, 02:10:03 PM »
yes, silly of me not to have mentioned this before, but I'll be there Thursday and Friday for my sister's graduation (well, I'm driving up there tonight, but don't expect to get there until quite late). And Saturday morning. Unfortunately I'm not really sure what my schedule is there...the convocation is Friday at 11, and then I'm going out to lunch with family afterward. There's also a Saturday lunch thing with a family friend's family, but I may or may not be going to that--my sister herself is leaving that morning.

Sooo anyone want to do anything sometime during the time I'm there? Do any of you still go to TLE Saturday mornings? Or was it mornings...I completely forget what time we met on Saturdays. Is there even a meeting scheduled, with graduation and all?

oh... my cell phone number is (626) 679-5255

Everything Else / Re: Worldcon Mark II

Well, I can say Paladin of Souls by Bujold is a worthy book. This universe's god-system is really a treat for me. And the ways this book goes against cliches really makes me smile--like the part where the protagonist meets the guy who is every woman's dream guy...and soon realizes that he has a big, big problem.

I haven't read the other nominees (yet), but I have Humans on hold at the library. It's a sequel to last year's winner, Hominids, which I enjoyed aside from the straw-man anti-religious sorta-argument (there are a few characters who profess being religious but the author shows no real understanding of what faith is about--but it's not really a harsh criticism of or attack on religion; he is much harder on humanity's performance on environmental issues) and the fact that the Neanderthal's culture was too perfect; I have hope these issues will be cleared up in the sequel and the final book (which are already out), but if they're not, it will take a lot for me to recommend it regardless.

I don't think the forum gets enough traffic to need stickies. All the posts you mentioned stay on the front page of the subforum anyway, so personally I don't see a need.

Everyone who's going to Worldcon: are you researching your Hugo votes?

well also make sure you have the latest windows updates, since it sounds like you could have had some hole that got exploited, like the RPC hole that blaster went through.

but yeah...I'm happy on my mac too...

My friend has some piece of malware on his computer that isn't known about by any of the adaware type things he tries. It is a little annoying but benign in his case; it has no adverse effect on anything he does. It's some sort of thing where if he goes to a website with a form that has a field named "URL" it will stick some sort of picked-from-a-list url into that field whenever the form gets submitted. Specifically when he's uploading torrents to scarywater, these urls show up on the page where you can edit the page the visitors see...but since the URL field only becomes active for torrents not hosted on scarywater, and all the ones he uploads are hosted on it, the page viewers never see these spurious links at all, so they do nothing except add a bit of clutter to the page only staff can see.
