Music / Steampunk music
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:26:11 AM »

I have taken a recent and very strong liking to steampunk music.

Just today I found a really amazing band called Rasputina.

They did a great cover for Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.  One of their better songs is called Transylvanian Concubine.

Do any of you guys listen to steam punk music?

« on: January 15, 2010, 06:07:29 AM »

So, I'm currently kind of bored.  I'm working on writing my resume and cover letter that I will be using for applying for internships.  I can't even start an internship until next January, but I'm applying now.  I'm majoring in Game Programming for anyone who didn't know, if you have suggestions to companies I should apply for please say something and I'll look into it.

Layout

company name :: popular game

Places who will receive my application information:

Ancient :: Sonic the Hedgehog *
Blizzard :: Diablo
Camelot Software Planning :: Golden Sun *
Harmonics :: Rockband/Guitar Hero
Konami :: Silent Hill *
Lionhead Studios :: Fable *
Lucas Arts :: KotOR
Nintendo :: Mario *
Square :: Final Fantasy *

Anything marked with an asterisk is located out of the country and I'm not expecting to get, but if I do I will make them my top priority because it would add to the experience.

Dan Wells / Dan Sanderson?
« on: January 14, 2010, 11:00:09 PM »

So Dan, I thought I'd share this story with you.  You remember a while back my story about making my grandma read your book and how she really liked it?  Well today she asked me "When is the next Dan Sanderson book coming out?"  I said, "What?"  She said, "Yeah, you know not Brandon Wells, but that other guy you read, with that book with John Clever in it."

She gets the character name right of course. ::)

Everything Else / ICQ
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:43:19 AM »

So I downloaded ICQ.  It seems to be a pretty intense messenger, sadly I have like no contacts.  I flipped through what few people here had ICQ and added them if I knew who they were, but if you have an ICQ add me my number is 566999464.

Also, what do you think of ICQ?

Us over at Hoid's Compendium are workign on getting an interview with Brandon.  We will need a list of questions to ask.  We have at least two or so weeks before this will happen, so this gives us ample time to gather many questions from you.

Movies and TV / They're moving Jay Leno because . . .
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:56:24 AM »

Too many people watch Jay Leno instead of the News so affiliates are threatening to cancel because their ratings are too low.   :D

I found this very humorous.

Books / A series I can't remember
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:21:05 AM »

OK, so this has been bothering me for a few years, and I never thought to ask here.  So there is a book series I read when I was in grade school, which means it could have ranged from anything from a YA novel to a regular Fiction series because I read them all.

Things I remember:
*The main character could go into a different place when he slept
*There were many worlds in this place
*He could bring things back when traveling there in dreams, which you aren't supposed to be able to do
*Other people can get there, but you have to like go around a long way
*His uncle comes and takes him away to teach him to be a wizard
*There is a girl in an Egyptian type world where they aren't allowed to have books
*He takes her books and she hides them in the "space" above her shoulder
*There was something about a wizards or sorcerers signature that was unforgable or something along those lines.
*One of the spells I remember a silencing spell and he once cast it so strongly when trying to talk to his mom without his uncle hearing that they had to "dig" through the spell to make a way for them to talk to each other.

So yeah, does this sound familiar to anyone?  I would appreciate anything, it's one of those books you read a LONG time ago and really liked but you can't remember what it is.  I would just really really like to read it again.

Books / Manga Recommendations
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:17:19 AM »

So I haven't read a good manga series in quite some time.  They always seem either be too short and I don't feel satisfied or they are ridiculously too long and never get to a point.

I would like suggestions, I like pretty much any genre so long as the story is decent.

Movies and TV / 3DTV's
« on: January 06, 2010, 10:22:31 AM »

Found this link and thought you guys would want to talk about it.

I was watching 'The Feed' on 'Attack of the Show' and they made an announcement about it being a big thing at CES this year, so I tried to find some information about it, I also knew that we had brought it up in the Avatar thread.

Brandon Sanderson / I guess now's as good a time as any to announce
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:30:05 PM »

For the past month or so, Mi'chelle, Eric, Kendra, Silk (I don't know your real name), and I have been working on a project.  Mi'chelle and I started on the project first and later invited the others to join.  We started a fan site that will encompass all aspects of EUOL's writing and other projects.  I still need to work out a little bit of the layout as well as the top menus.  The main site is a combination of a blog, and other pages that give information about each of EUOL's projects.  We have a Twitter and a FaceBook, as well as RSS feeds for posts that are made to the sites blog.  All things update whenever a post is made to the website so you have multiple ways to keep up on what is going on on Hoid's Compendium.

We also have a forum and a wiki.  Here soon, in addition to keeping it updated on Brandon Sanderson news, we will be publishing articles once a week ranging from interviews with characters at different points in the book, to articles about a certain aspect of a book.  We will also soon be having weekly or bi-weekly discussions that we will podcast for the rest of you to hear, as well as written out for those who can't get podcasts.  We are going to go over a lot of topics that are found here on the forums so that people who don't spend a lot of time on here or who are here but missed the lengthy 30 page discussions, we will condense them down to our podcast length (which has yet to be determined).

We also hope that more features will come to pass, but for now these are the things we are finishing up or are going to be starting in the immediate future.  Hope to see you there or subscribed. =]

Everything Else / Learning to speak and writing a learning guide to Na'Vi
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:57:35 AM »

So yeah, I've decided I am overly nerd-tastic and I really want to learn to speak Na'Vi.  For now I just have what is on the internet, I can't wait for the DVD to come out so that I can listen to it repetitively.

Did you know Na'Vi uses in-fixes to conjugate verbs?  It's quite interesting.

Anyone else interested in learning?

Also, do you know of any human language what uses in-fixes as apposed to suffixes or prefixes?

Brandon Sanderson / So, Hoid was there when what happened?
« on: December 19, 2009, 10:57:06 PM »

So I wasn't sure if this should go in the Adonalsium topic, the Hoid topic, or if it deserved a topic of its own.  After thinking strongly about it I decided that it deserved its own topic, due to the fact that it would fit in either of them and it would cause a kind of fused discussion of the two topics.

While talking with EUOL today I had asked about Hoid being Midius from Partinel.  He said he had many names, but avoided a yes or no answer.  I then asked if Hoid was a shard, he said no and then said something about how no one has read the end of Partinel due to its not being written well and the plethora of spoilers it contains. . . .

He then told me that Hoid was there when Adonalsium was shattered.

Does this mean that is what happens at the end of Partinel?  Was it Hoid's fault that Adonalsium was shattered?  What is/was Adonalsium when it was whole?  Is Hoid bound to the Shards and that is why he shows up on Shard worlds and seems to somehow support the power of them? (i.e. helping the Elantrians, which lead to fixing the Dor.  Helping them overthrow ruin and bring the two Shards together?)

I personally believe that after having broke Adonalsium, Hoid is committed to reuniting the Shards and rebuilding Adonalsium.  Whether it is something he wants to do as per saving Adonalsium, a punishment, or a goal of power, I don't know.

Brandon Sanderson / Anyone have questions for Brandon?
« on: December 19, 2009, 08:04:20 AM »

I'm going to be at the signing in Idaho Falls tomorrow.  I can't stay for after due to the fact that I have to work, but I can try and squeeze in a few questions.
