Awesome! I can't wait. But if David Boreanaz is Zane, then James Marsters has to be Kelsier.

So I'm imagining I'd die terribly in a 70 instance run? I just got up to 62, but that's nowhere near 70.

Oh, ANYTHING by Lane Smith and/or John Scieczka is hilarious. Must-reads: The Happy Hockey Family, The Happy Hockey Family Goes to the Country, The Stinky Cheese Man, The Absolutely True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolfe, and a whoooole bunch of others. John Scieczka is touring right now for a truck book he just released with several other authors, aimed at boys obviously. I haven't seen the book but I'm sure it's great. He's the Ambassador of Children's Literature right now.

Seriously, having a good spouse is worth a whole lot more than single people think.

Huh?

I think most of us single people probably do know exactly how much that is worth. We just don't happen to have one.

There's always A Practical Guide to Monsters and A Practical Guide to Dragons. And I have no self-interest whatsoever in recommending them at all.  ;) But really, they're a lot of fun.

Well, I was having major lagging issues with 1 gig, so I figured upgrading to 4 as opposed to 2 would have made a difference. It actually comes out to something like 3.7 because the video card takes part of that memory. I have an NVIDIA card, which is definitely an improvement on my old video card, which was pretty much bare bones of whatever was available when I bought it.

But it's definitely an argument for XP. I only bought Vista because it was the only OS option on this computer. I would have preferred XP.

I haven't been on for a month, I've been so busy at work. Got my memory upgrade for my new computer last night, and finally got on WoW again. It was nice, but it wasn't a whole lot faster--and Nath locked me out, it was so busy. I've never seen it so busy as to say I'm 15th in line to get on. So I played on Draka. But it's strange either way. Perhaps they were just so busy last night that the server-side was delayed? I didn't lag or anything, so that's good, but I also didn't see the kind of improvement of performance I thought I would. (I went from 1gig to 4  gig on a Vista machine. Yet another reason to think about just scrapping Vista and installing XP from my old computer.)

Movies and TV / Re: When tissues are not enough

Have you ever seen Truly, Madly, Deeply? I BAWLED during the first half of that movie. It's got a hopeful side, but it was more than just a tearjerker at the beginning. I generally tend to hate "tearjerkers" and/or just find them emotionally manipulative, so when a film makes me genuinely cry because it just makes me so sad for the character, that makes me notice and remember.

Everything Else / Re: volunteerism

Most libraries have a number of programs you can offer to volunteer for. Here in Seattle, up until earlier this year, I've been doing Homework Help with kids in a branch in a lower-income neighborhood. Only my unpredictable health has kept me from continuing--I hated being unreliable for the kids. They also have special programs at the library that they need volunteers for on an as-needed basis, which I try to do every now and then. It's a great way to get involved in the community.

I got a CD alarm clock and a VCR using those kinds of points at an old job. Funny, that means I've had my CD alarm clock for almost 10 years. Never really thought about it. (Also, it means that I probably ought to think about replacing it with one that works for my iPod or something.)

Rants and Stuff / Re: My Experience with Jury Duty

I've been summoned to jury duty 2 or 3 times, always after I've moved from the area. I'd really like to do it, actually--I like being involved in the process of our country, and feel it's my civic duty. But I've never had the chance to.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: December 30, 2007, 08:26:34 AM »
Oh, speaking of Alcatraz, Brandon, a sighting at my local library: I was asking the reference librarian a question. He wasn't the regular children's and YA librarian, and I think the desk he was sitting at is hers. A photocopy of Alcatraz sat in a frame on the desk. I asked him about it but he thought it was silly--so I'm sure it was the other librarians', because she seems much cooler and would appreciate the joke more. When I tried to tell him it a satire of librarians controlling the information in the world, he took it way too seriously and blustered, "Well, that just can't be right, because librarians are the ones who are trying to make information available to all!" as if the book were trying to put out misinformation about librarians. He wouldn't listen to me no matter how much I tried to tell him that no, really, it was a very funny book.  ::)

Alcatraz is very humorous, with a creative magic system as you might expect from Brandon. Its plot is simpler, but it's not completely predictable like you might expect many kids' books to be. It also contains entertaining allusions and satire elements.

Et tu, Brutus? ;) I know you're just speaking to others' expectations, but it really bugs me that so many people still think so lowly of children's literature that they expect it to be bad. Sure, there's some real duds out there. But there are also plenty of really great kids' books that aren't what you expect kids' books to be because few people really know what's out there in kids' books.
