Everything Else / Welcome!
« on: September 07, 2005, 05:56:32 PM »
I just noticed that our newest member is Eric James Stone, who we all met at CascadiaCon. Eric is an excellent writer who you should all get to know. He's been a Writers of the Future finalist twice.

CCGs / Hecatomb
« on: August 03, 2005, 03:09:25 AM »
Have you guys heard anything about Hecatomb? They just gave everyone in the company starters. It hasn't been released yet (not sure when it will be), so I wasn't sure if you've gotten it for review.

Anyway, it looks great. The cards have such a fun look and feel. I haven't read through to see how it's played yet. I'm having a few people over for my birthday this weekend; maybe I'll try to play it with them.

Everything Else / Free baseball game!

Someone at work just gave me free tickets to the Mariners game tomorrow. They're club tickets, too, which is pretty cool, I believe.

Rants and Stuff / Name that car
« on: June 15, 2005, 05:34:58 PM »
Izzy and I have decided my car needs a name. But not just any name. I mean something as cool as the car I parked next to at work today, whose Vermont license plate says "VADER" on it. Not that I'm going to get a vanity plate or anything.

But this is an 85 Jeep Cherokee. Two-door, so it's shorter than most Cherokees. Dark grey. Paint is oxydizing, so it looks rough and brownish on the hood and roof. Tan interior. Backfires occasionally (but not as often as when I first got it! it needs the idle adjusted and carburetor tuned).

Suggestions?

Okay, so Ginger was a little trimmer than I was and my hair is longer. But it was a fun night.

Thanks for putting my gallery back up, SE! Yay!

Rants and Stuff / Folklife and missed calls
« on: May 27, 2005, 02:07:29 AM »
Two things: if Peter's sister reads this, welcome! I live in Seattle! It's great that we live so close.

My semi-rant for the night: who the heck do I know in Nebraska? I got a missed call on my cell today from the 402 area code. I got sidetracked from tracking it down till now, but they didn't leave a voicemail, so it was probably a wrong number. Funniest thing about that was as I was trying to access my menu to see about it, a guy in my ward called. So I was thinking, "But I didn't hit the button to call Ryan! What's this phone doing?" So I hung up on him, thinking I had accidentally called him. Whoops. He called back, which is a good thing, because he's the one with the info on the folk music festival this weekend. I'm jumping right into the music scene in Seattle.

Speaking of which, you guys coming to Cascadiacon will get here right during the middle of Bumbershoot, which is supposed to be the Seattle music festival to go to. Ryan, the folk guy, says that he actually prefers Folklife (this weekend), and I have a feeling I'm going to agree, because I prefer folk to alternative. But I'm going to experience both.

You know, somebody should be visiting me this weekend. It's Memorial Day weekend! Come to Seattle, play on the beach, go to a folk music festival, and go hiking with me on Monday! The weather is finally absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait for my bike to get here so I can go riding up along the coast.

Role-Playing Games / D&D for Dummies

I just got a copy of this at work. Kind of a fun book. The cartoons at the beginning of each chapter are funny. Anybody else seen it?

Role-Playing Games / They'll make a gamer of me yet
« on: May 09, 2005, 09:42:49 PM »
My welcome packet contained (in addition to much, much paperwork):

D&D Basic Game
Years of Adventure (30 yr anniversary book)
Clone Strike Starter Set (SW minis)
D&D dice set
Duel Masters starter set
GI Joe 2-player starter game
City of Towers (Eberron book 1)
Dragoneye Expansion Pack (D&D minis)
A set of Magic cards (Kamigawa--Spiritbane)
and several small packs of cards, like Star Wars RotJ, Neopets, and Magic Unhinged
oh, and the New Jedi Order Sourcebook and the Epic Level Handbook for D&D.

And I have a handful of other sourcebooks at my desk, because I'll have to become at least nominally familiar with the game so I can edit the books. So, maybe one of these days, I'll know what you guys are talking about!

Everything Else / Hello from Seattle
« on: May 07, 2005, 10:36:05 PM »
I am now officially a West Coast TWGer. I think I'll watch Sleepless in Seattle tonight to celebrate. Though I think I'll be anything but sleepless--it's been a loooong day. I left my house this morning in Boston at 4am, which was 1am Pacific time. It is now 9:30 Eastern time and 6:30 Pacific. I'm too tired to calculate the number, though.

But! I also am now the official owner of a 85 Jeep Cherokee. It's pretty cool. I bought it off my brother. And I think I might have already found an apartment, though I think I should take the next week to see what else is out there. But of the three I saw today, it stands far and above. And it even has south facing windows, which, I am told, are a must.

Rants and Stuff / Readers needed
« on: May 06, 2005, 12:54:39 PM »
Okay, guys, down to the wire. Last paper of all, due today. I find I can't see straight, especially because my printer is packed up and I can't print the paper to see it all together. Editing on screen doesn't work for me. Plus, I slept a total of four hours last night and I'm just out of energy. SE is going to try to read it on his lunch hour and give me feedback, but if a couple others would have the time, as well, I'd be forever appreciative.

Only thing is, I need it right now, within the next two or three hours. I'd even do something like buy you lunch the next time I saw you (offer is good for SE, too--he's done a lot of reading for me this week). It doesn't need a heavy hand, just a quick once-over to look at the organization, help me know where things might fit better, where I might be arguing against myself instead of pointing out the complications, that sort of thing. This is such a last-minute paper that all I care about is passing so I can graduate.

So, any takers? Pretty please?

Books / Fairy tales linked to violent relationships
« on: May 04, 2005, 09:40:58 PM »
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1540&ncid=1540&e=2&u=/afp/20050422/sc_afp/sciencebritainwomen_050422114707

Oh please. I think there's a lot more going on in those relationships than the women liking Cinderella. What the story--and apparently the researcher--fail to recognize is there are abundantly more versions of such fairy tales than just the Disney versions, and even if Disney has become synonomous with "fairy tale," you would think that stories like Beauty and the Beast would actually be in the "less submissive" category. And "submissive" is a problematic word anyway--there's a difference between "submissive" in scriptural terms, for example, and being willing to be a doormat to an abuser.

Rants and Stuff / My computer needs some serious help
« on: May 02, 2005, 05:00:13 PM »
Can anyone tell me why Outlook would be running in my processes when I don't have it open? It's taking up 57% of my CPU usage, and hasn't been working right for days. I've scanned for viruses, but found nothing. Speaking of virus scanners, McAfee (well, McShield) is using 20% of the CPU usage. Is that normal? I also had Limewire for some things a while back, but haven't been using it for a while, and it's not open--either actively or running on the side in the taskbar. Yet it's using 7% of my CPU right now. What's up with that?

Everything Else / LTUE pics
« on: April 18, 2005, 09:46:26 PM »
I feel remiss. I don't think I ever posted a link to them. http://saintehlers.com/Stacer/gallery/LTUE

First page or so is a dinner with a bunch of friends, and then there are pics of me presenting my paper and lunch with TWG people. Enjoy.

Everything Else / Shipping plants
« on: April 15, 2005, 01:28:04 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how to get my plants out to Seattle. I can mail or send via UPS practically everything else I need to, but the plants are a problem. I called UPS about the possibility of shipping them next-day (so they won't die in the meantime), and for 2 plants (they're big) it'd cost me something like $500. Ouch!

I've had these plants for 7 years. I don't *want* to give them up if I don't have to. Anyone have any suggestions other than driving them to Seattle myself?
