Hey guys,

Most of you already know about this, but if you haven't already heard via Facebook or Twitter, I just wanted to let you know about the new small press I'm starting, Tu Publishing. We'll focus on multicultural science fiction and fantasy for children and young adults.

To raise enough capital to get off the ground, we're running a Kickstarter campaign. If you donate $5, you get a bookmark; $10 gets a coupon for a book; $25 gets a book, and so forth. Rewards for your backing through a secure site, and no money changes hands unless we meet our goal.

To make sure that we meet our goal, some friends have put together an online auction where the bids are for donations to the Kickstarter. So, if you win an auction, you not only would get, for example, a giant box of manga, you'd also get the Kickstarter reward that your donation promises. Two rewards for one!

Anyway, just thought I'd share that and let you know it's out there.

I think that's part of the intended discussion the letter is asking for.

Oh, I wasn't correcting you per se. Just letting everyone know if they didn't already who I was here. :)

Here's the American Booksellers Association (independent booksellers) responding to the price wars, with an indepth explanation to the DOJ why this practice is detrimental to the whole industry. Everything they say is exactly what publishers are worried about, as well--it's an increased focus on the already unhealthy focus on blockbuster bestsellers. They're selling them at a loss--less than it costs to PRINT the books--which means that even though publishers are getting their full price, it means bad, bad things for pricing in the future. This is setting price expectations among consumers--who's going to try a new author for $20, $25, $30 if they can get a big name for $9?? And few publishers can afford to print quality hardcovers for $9, let alone mark it up a little to make any kind of money to pay their editors, their designers, their sales staff, their accounting department... AND still pay the author 10-15%.

I keep meaning to come over here and post, and I just realized today that it's been a MONTH that I've been meaning to do so. So thanks to everyone looking out for me letting Julie know I needed a room and everything.

I do still need a ride. I'm hoping to replace my tires and brakes by mid-October, so there was the possibility I could drive if necessary, but I'd rather not if there are spaces. Marion, if you're driving, I'd be glad to catch a ride with you, or whoever else has a spot.

Janci, I believe the girls' room is just me, Heidi, and Julie so far, so if you ended up wanting to stay with us instead of with friends you'd be welcome to.

I think I'll be going, but I still don't know where I'll be living when October comes. So I'll be looking to share a hotel room (if I don't end up staying with a friend who lives near SF) but don't know yet whether I'll be driving down.

Welcome, April. I rarely come back here nowadays, but now that you're here maybe I should hang out more often! :)

I love how YA is suddenly "rinky dink" and less worthy than a book written for adults. And just so you know, 200,000 is about 2-3 YA novels.

I'm speaking on Wed. night at the Salt Lake Library to the SCBWI about the state of children's/YA fantasy/SF.

Also, I forgot to mention that my sister and her family are staying with me Mon-Wed, so lunch w/ me and Oldielocks will probably be Thurs. or Fri.

Close, Nessa, but it's Draka that's the server.

I'm Norroway on Horde on Draka (l70), but I rarely get over on her mostly because the friends I normally play with rarely play their Horde alts.

So most of the time I'm Rinalasha (74 night elf druid) on Alliance, though sometimes I'm MissParker.

Mistress of Darkness on here (who hasn't been coming around here much lately) can be found playing with me on there too as Vivien or Lionora. Our guild is named Stet Cannister, for anyone who remembers that. FuzzyOctupus (who also rarely comes here, if at all) is also on there, as is MoD's husband.

I love Chuck, too. I watched some of My Own Worst Enemy, but it got boring. What I really love is Crusoe, but I've felt all along that it shouldn't last more than a season--that it should be like a long miniseries, where we get to see him go home again. The adventures on the island are a lot of fun, but the thing about a story like that is that you can only stretch it so far before the guy really just needs to go home. Given that Crusoe is not a Leaper, and that there seem to be plenty of ships stopping by that island, it was only a matter of time before him not getting home got ridiculous. Right now it's not--I love it--but I'm saying if they stretched it to 2 or 3 seasons it would be harder to believe.

I'm from IL, and I thought we were done with this when Ryan went to prison. This is ridiculous. I don't remember Chicago politics being like this when I lived there, but then, I was just there for a little over a year and a half, and I grew up downstate. They do get down and dirty, though. I'm not sure it's much better downstate, given that the governors who have been in office for the last 10 years or more have turned out to be corrupt. (Blagojovich replaced Ryan.) No doubt they've got cronies from all over the state by now.

It's not just hiring freezes. Yesterday has been dubbed "Black Wednesday" by several people in publishing, and some major names left several major houses. A good three or four places had not only hiring freezes, but layoffs. I combined all the news reports I've been seeing in one place on my blog.
