The TWG Worldcon 2006 Thread will be found here:

http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=brandon;action=display;num=1135805251

I post this here because some people have complained that they don't see posts unless something appears in Rants or Everything Else.  You have been warned!  Thread now locked.

Brandon Sanderson / Official Worldcon 2006 Thread
« on: December 28, 2005, 05:27:31 PM »
I'm putting it here because I think it will be easier to keep track of without it getting lost, and because I want to link people through to it from my site.

This thread is the official "Let's go to Worldcon" thread.  I would like to try and get several car-loads of people and drive down together to save on gas.  The con is in LA this year, and is likely to be the largest Worldcon in years.  Should be a fun time!  More information here:  http://www.laconiv.org/

I also have an ulterior motive for trying to get people to this convention.  I'll be eligible for the Campbell award.  This is kind of like the "Rookie of the Year Award" for sf/f authors.  Our good friend Eric James Stone is also eligible.  And, anyone going to Worldcon can nominate and vote for the Campbell award.

I honestly don't expect to be able to grass-roots drum up enough votes to win.  However, last I heard you only needed about twenty or so nominations to get on the ballot, and I'd really like to be there.  So, if you're thinking of going to Worldcon, I would really appreciate a nomination.  (Plus, you can nominate multiple people, so you can put down both me and Eric.  Everybody wins!)

The catch is that if you want to be in on the nomination process, you have to be a member by the end of the year (or at least by the early beginning of next year.)  That means dropping $180 in advance.  (Or, you can pay $50 right now for voting rights, then upgrade that later for $130.)

Anyway, enough shameless self promotion.  Who's planning on going?  I'll keep a running tab here in this post.  I'll place where you will be leaving from, so that we can organize rides.

HOTEL INFORMATION:
As of January First, the hotels opened for reservations.  I have reserved two rooms under my name at the Marriott.  The rooms are $99 a night.  The Hilton has rooms for one person at $99, but that goes up to $160 when you have four people, while the Marriott is the same no matter what.  The Hilton is closer, but the Marriott is only across the street, so it should be plenty close.

You should note that I may not have room for everyone in my hotel rooms!  I intend to wait until later to determine who will sleep where, but if you're worried, you are welcome to make your own reservation.  They can be canceled up until the day of arrival.  (My rooms, by the way, are for Tuesday through Saturday.)

Brandon Sanderson / EUOL on TV
« on: December 22, 2005, 07:58:42 PM »
So, I did the local IF morning news show today.  And, of course, my entire family slept through it.

It was a fun, but short, spot.  Three minutes.  Now I know what it feels like to be on the daily show!  (They also do three minute interviews, don't they?)

Brandon Sanderson / Best Email Lately
« on: December 01, 2005, 05:20:22 PM »
Got this bit of mail through the brandonsanderson.com site:
Quote

I have just completed Elantris, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.  One of the reasons I liked it so much is because I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and feel like an Elantrian in every way.  My hair all fell out and my skin is blotchy and dry and wrinkled.  I am 38 and I feel like Im 70.  I wish I could convey to you how much your book meant to me.  It  was very uplifting and I feel like I will "complete my tranformation" after chemo is finished in January.  I can't wait to share it with some of my breast cancer friends.  Thank you for a truly enjoyable read during possibly the worst time of my life.

All I can say is wow.

Brandon Sanderson / Story Idea of the Day
« on: November 17, 2005, 06:31:43 PM »
So, what do you guys think of this?  I figured I needed some kind of theme to motivate me to blog more often, and since I'm always thinking of new wacky story ideas, most of which I'll never end up using.  I figured I'd try and post one a day.

Suggestions?  Comments?  I'm not looking for story ideas to post--I'll come up with those on my own.  I'm just curious to see if any of these are actually useful, or what you think of the entire concept.

Webcomics & Free Stuff / Squidi Gives Up
« on: August 04, 2005, 05:32:42 AM »
Interesting:

http://www.squidi.net/

(Warning--language in the rant.)

I find this entire event fascinating.  The truth is, Squidi was actually amusing at times, in his comic, when he didn't let himself get carried away with too many characters and plots.  (A big problem in the recent comics.)

However, from his rants, I always felt like he was a bit...well, unforgiving.  He liked to call people names, as you can see from this rant, and he wasn't able to express his opinions without insulting people.

Brandon Sanderson / Mad Prince
« on: August 01, 2005, 04:42:34 AM »
Well, I finally posted the Mad Prince deleted scenes from ELANTRIS.  Some of you have bugged me about these, wanting to know who he was, so I finally posted them.

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/book.php?id=1&section=8

There are some moderately big spoilers in these chapters, so I wouldn't recommend reading them until you've read the novel itself.  These used to come near the end of the novel.

Let me know if anything in these scenes needs more set-up than I've given.  It's hard to judge sometimes.  Anyway, for those of you who read the early drafts of ELANTRIS, you now know where to go if you're just dying to relive your favorite Mad Prince moments....

(My favorite: "Moles.")

Brandon Sanderson / DB Carries Elantris
« on: July 26, 2005, 02:42:29 PM »
Deseret Book has decided to stock ELANTRIS.  This took quite a bit of finagling on my part (I had to get the right number of the right buyer and get a copy into her hands) so I'm quite happy about the event.

For those who don't know, Deseret Book is an LDS themed bookstore chain in the west.

Of course, now that the book is in DB, I'm left wondering how to make the best use of the event.  If there is just going to be one copy per store, buried back in the stacks, I don't know that this will be all that helpful.

Brandon Sanderson / Call For Readers (Mark XVI)
« on: July 25, 2005, 03:01:32 PM »
THE WELL OF ASCENSION is finished, and I don't believe I've offered it up for reads yet.  So, here we go.   Anyone who wants to give this a read, let me know, and I'll fire you off a copy.

This call is only for those who've done reads for me before, unfortunately.  Those of you who are newer to the boards may not realize this, but many of the people here are friends of mine in RL.  If you hang around for a few years and seem like a trustworthy type, I might be persuaded to send you copies of future books.  However, I need to be VERY careful with electronic copies (as you might imagine) of my novels.

There will be a physical copy going around Utah eventually, and I'll let anyone who asks nicely read that one.

Also, the Alcatraz First-Person rewrite/general cleanup is finished.  Any of you who read the first draft, and want to see what I did with this version, are welcome to post for a copy here.  Also, if you've never read this one, it's quite quick and (hopefully) a fun read.  I could use feedback, now that it's in the format I want.
