Brandon Sanderson / ELANTRIS Paperback
« on: May 30, 2006, 03:20:45 PM »
Well, today is the official release date.  I'm curious to see how paperback sales go--I've been through the hardback thing once, but paperback is a whole new world for me.

I was waiting to see what the Amazon numbers were today, and there's be a lot less fanfare than there was for the paperback.  In hardback, we got to about #2500 in books the first few days.  The paperback is around 40k right now, which is lower than it's been before, but hardly stunning.

Makes me wonder, however, how people even find new books on Amazon.  There's really no way a small, genre book like this is going to get any sort of publicity on their site.  My guess is that people have to go browse bookstores, see the book and want to buy it, then go order it off of Amazon.  However, I see that happening far less frequently for paperbacks than hardbacks, since Amazon offers HBs at significant discounts, but paperbacks are at their regular prices.

Brandon Sanderson / Final Annotation
« on: May 29, 2006, 05:56:01 PM »
Well, the very last one is up.

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/anno.php?book=Elantris&id=99

That was an interesting process.  It took about a year to get through them  all.  I'm hoping that as more people discover the book in paperback, they'll find the annotations very interesting.

Brandon Sanderson / MISTBORN Reviews
« on: May 14, 2006, 09:43:20 PM »
Amazon has posted the PW review of MISTBORN.

It's okay.  Not a rave review by any stretch, but not condemning either.  Rather lukewarm.

Brandon Sanderson / Welcome!
« on: May 10, 2006, 10:10:14 AM »
Welcome to the Brandon Sanderson Forum.  I'm glad you found your way here.  There are a few things you should know.

1)  I do frequent these forums, under the name EUOL.  If you post here, I'll read your words--though whether or not I actually post a reply will depend on how busy I am with writing!

2) My forum is hosted by a much larger forum community, the Time-Waster's Guide.  While many of those who post here have read my books, don't assume that everyone on the boards is interested in talking about me or my work.  The TWG was around long before I got published.  Please keep all Brandon Sanderson related threads to this particular section of the forum!

3) Also, I do suggest you venture outside of my little section here and experience the TWG at large.  The main site has lots of interesting articles (get there by clicking the banner at the top of the page).  If you're going to post on the forums, please read the FAQ thread: http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0

Finally, by virtue of coming to my forum and actually reading the welcome thread, you enter an elite group.  If you ever want to read sample chapters of books I'm working on (long before I post those chapters on my website) just give me a holler and I'll send them off.  If you stick around a while and convince me you're trustworthy, and I might even be willing to send you electronic copies of some of my older, unpublished novels.

Thanks!

Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn 3 Done
« on: May 03, 2006, 04:51:39 PM »
Okay, the 3.0 on HERO OF AGES is finished.  This is an offer to those of you who have managed to wiggle your way into the Sanderson alpha reader camp.

If you need to ask, the people in this camp are the friends that I know personally (plus a few long time TWGers) who have been reading my work for years and giving me feedback.  This is the third book in the series--so, mostly I'm looking to send it to those who have read the previous ones.

(Anyone in contact with Gemm?  What the heck is his current forum name?  I think he'll be very interested in this book, as Spook is one of the prime viewpoint characters.)

Blog post today includes my first piece of fan art, along with a link to an article I wrote on how I turn ideas into books.

I think the painting is quite good, personally.

Everything Else / Sanderson Brothers Dance Off

In case you missed it.  Come vote.  I need to show up my punk brother.  (Even if I am afraid that his Voltron is going to beat up my Walken.)

Brandon Sanderson / MySpace (A.K.A. The Dance-Off Thread)

Well, it's what all the kids are doing these days, apparently.  And, since a lot of my hits come via MySpace, it was suggested to me that I throw up a page for my work there.

Any suggestions/hints on making the page look better?

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn Cover Quote
« on: April 12, 2006, 01:48:20 AM »
"Mistborn utilizes a well thought out system of magic.  It also has a great cast of believable characters, a plausible world, an intriguing political system, and despite being the first book of The Final Empire, a very satisfying ending.  In short, it's one of those great kettle books, in which the author has thrown not merely a bone of an idea and a few potatoes of originality, but half a cow and everything in the garden.  And then added seasonings. Highly recommended to anyone hungry for a good read."

--Robin Hobb

That last line, "Highly recommended to anyone hungry for a good read" will look great on the front of a jacket.

I have to say, I'm so humbled that people not only take time to read my book, but to say nice things about it.  I can only imagine how busy someone like Robin Hobb must be.

Anyway, I feel incredibly lucky.  Two of my favorite authors--perhaps my two very favorite authors--have quoted my first two books.

Everything Else / Leslie Norris
« on: April 10, 2006, 07:20:51 PM »
In case this hasn't been posted yet:

Obituary for Leslie Norris

Leslie Norris, Brigham Young University emeritus Humanities Professor of Creative Writing, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Provo, Utah. He was born May 21, 1920, near Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, to George and Mary Jane Norris. Growing up in Wales, his great passions were soccer, singing, boxing, and raising dogs. He married Catherine (Kitty) Mary Morgan on July 30, 1948. After earning degrees at the City of Coventry College and the University of Southampton, he taught in the pubic schools before beginning his university teaching career. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Leslie was a distinguished writer of poetry and short stories, writing over twenty books and chapbooks. He won many prizes for his writing, which was widely reviewed. A splendid reader, he recorded for BBC’s school programs and gave countless public readings. Before coming to BYU, Leslie held the Theodore Roethke Memorial Chair of Poetry at the University of Washington. Poet in Residence, he taught at BYU for twenty years. Two films have been made of his life and work. Leslie is survived by his wife, Kitty, by a brother, Gordon, of Witney, England, and by three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eric. The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 12, at 1:00 pm in the Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East, Orem Utah. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to support a fund benefitting creative writing students at BYU. Checks should be made payable to the BYU English Department and mailed to the Leslie Norris Fund, English Department, BYU,  Provo, Ut., 84602.

I heard Leslie read a couple of times, though I never got to take one of his classes.  However, he was undoubtedly BYU's finest writer, and will be sorely missed.

Brandon Sanderson / MISTBORN 3 Finished
« on: March 21, 2006, 08:44:39 AM »
Yup.  Finally got it done.  That means that the trilogy is all done, at least in rough draft form.  I won't be sending out any copies to my alpha readers (you know who you are) until I've drafted it a bit, however.

Still, it feels good to finally have this beast finished.  Now, I can spend a few months drafting, and then turn my attention to another project.  Wow!  It's been so long since I was able to contemplate one of those.  (Alcatraz doesn't count, since I didn't anticipate it--it just kind of popped out.)

Well, it's out.  Here's the official list of editors who've gotten a copy of the book via Joshua:

1/Firebird/November/2-24-06
2/S&S Aladdin/Schutz/2-24-06
3/Harcourt/Tibbot/2-24-06
4/HarperCollins/Dudman/2-24-06
5/Little Brown/Sorkin/2-24-06
6/Houghton/O'Sullivan/2-24-06
7/Hyperion/Bray/2-24-06
8/Knopf/Frey/2-24-06
9/Candlewick/Bicknell/2-24-06
10/Scholastic/Rissi/2-27-06

Ah, the joys of having an agent and being able to do mass simultaneous submissions!  Moshe has an 'A' instead of a number because we sent him the book a week earlier than the others to give him a head start.

So, children's book people, how'd old Joshua do?  Is this a good list, you think?

Brandon Sanderson / ALCATRAZ Rewrite Done (Spoilers)
« on: February 02, 2006, 05:55:02 PM »
This is mostly for Stacer and Ms. Fish, who helped a lot with this particular revision.  Just thought I'd let you know the changes that I made, based on your reccomendations:

Joshua,

Alcatraz rewrite is done.  This is a good one--I think I finally have things finished.  And, I hope that your concerns about the book are now resolved.

Here is a small list of changes I've made to the text.  I'll put the book itself into the mail today or tomorrow, along with the contracts that I still have.

Alcatraz Revision 6.0
*   I figured that "Inner World" an "Outer World" were too confusing.  A lot of readers couldn't keep them straight.  So, now they are "The Free Kingdoms" for the continents we Americans don't know about and "Bibliovania" for the nations controlled by the Librarians.
*      I heightened the tension a bit at the beginning of the book, as Joshua asked.  I think the particular problem was that I never established that there was a time requirement on getting the Sands back.  So, I mentioned in a couple of places that smelting the Sands of Rashid into Lenses would only take a few hours, and after that it would be too late--the Librarians would have a dangerous weapon.  I think this makes the story more tense.
*      I made Alcatraz and Bastille fifteen, instead of fourteen, based on recommendations from people who know more about YA than I do.
*      I've weakened (slightly) Alcatraz's understanding of why forces his foster parents to abandon him.  That way, when he discovers that he drives people away intentionally, it's a stronger climax.
