Brandon Sanderson / Alcatraz 2
« on: October 26, 2006, 07:53:18 PM »
It's done, and I've revised to the point that it's off to my editor and agent.

If you're one of my alpha readers (you know who you are) then feel free to request a copy of this one.  Generally, this means those of you who read book one for me and gave comments.  Also, notice the other thread I'm starting for Alcatraz Acknowledgements.

There won't be any hard copies on this one, probably.  We'll see.

Brandon Sanderson / EMAIL OUT
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:31:34 PM »

ALERT!

If you sent Brandon an Email between 6:00 on Tuesday the 26th of September and 7:00 on Wednesday, the 27th, he DID NOT GET IT.  There was a problem with the spam filters on the server, and everything sent to me was automatically deleted.  That includes email through the form on my website, any replies to emails I may have sent you, and any just random "How are you doing?" emails that I might have gotten.

I've sent out emails to those I think might have emailed me.  However, the people I'm most worried about are readers who sent mail through my website.  There's no way for me--obviously--to contact them and let them know that I didn't get their email.  So, if you think I might not have gotten your email, please go ahead and resend it.

Thanks!

Brandon Sanderson / Japanese ELANTRIS

Here's the link:

Anyone want to do some translating for us?  Are those two alternate covers, or did the book get printed in two volumes?  Can you order it off of the web page, or is this just the publisher's website?

I really wish I could contact the publisher myself.  Now that I've lost to Scalzi, I have to look toward next year in Japan.  That means getting the Japanese people to read ELANTRIS!

Here's what I have so far!  If you belong on this list, let me know.  I apologize if I forgot you.  I just did a quick list, grabbing the names out of the folder where I stuck returned manuscripts with comments on them.  It's likely that some of the files didn't end up in the folder, or that you gave me comments in person and I didn't get you on the list.

Also, correct the spelling of your names!

Brandon Sanderson / Bucca Party
« on: August 02, 2006, 06:05:39 PM »
Well, we should probably start organizing this thing, eh?  Last year, we had the party when the books came from Tor.  Seems like a sound enough tradition.

I haven't gotten them yet, but they should come next week.  Are people interested in a party at the Salt Lake Bucca Di Beppo (or however you spell that?)  Or, with the wedding and Worldcon, are folks over-partied?

Edit:
Confirmed attendees

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn: Final Empire TYPO page
« on: July 31, 2006, 08:30:27 PM »
Someday, I'll go count up the ELANTRIS people and give them scores for being great typo-hunters on my website.  Until then, if you see a typo for MISTBORN, please post it here!

I'll start off.  The chart in the back has brass and zinc reversed, I believe.  Zinc, as the base metal, PULLS.  That means it should riot emotions, not sooth them.  I believe the narrative is right, but the chart never got changed to reflect this change.

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn Out!
« on: July 25, 2006, 01:07:44 PM »
All right, it's official.  The book has been released as of today.  That means Amazon is shipping it, and that means people can--if they want--post reviews to Amazon about the book!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/076531178X/ref=cm_plog_item_link/002-0191784-0456824?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

So, after you've read the novel, please consider giving it a review.  However, do be honest, and do--of course--read the book before you write a review.  Don't just spam it with random praise!  (As much as I like random praise....)

And, to start things off, Amazon posted the Booklist review of Mistborn a few days ago:

Quote
The Sliver of Infinity, the Lord Ruler, is the locus of religious and temporal order in a world in which the skaa are slaves or worse. Half-skaa erstwhile thief Kelsior is the only person to survive and escape the Lord Ruler's most brutal prison, in which, however, he discovered he has the powers of the Mistborn, which are based on the internal "burning" of certain metals, all of which the Mistborn can use, while most others can burn only one. Now Kelsior plans his most daring raid ever, into the center of the palace to discover the secret of the Lord Ruler's power. Beforehand, his band finds the half-skaa orphan Vin in another thieving crew, where she's useful because she brings good luck. She is also Mistborn and, if she can master and learn to trust her powers, will enable Kelsior's crew to infiltrate the nobility and possibly overthrow the status quo. Intrigue, politics, and conspiracies mesh complexly in a world Sanderson realizes in satisfying depth and peoples with impressive characters.

Nice to have something to balance out the PW review.

Well, since there have been several requests, I decided that I'd start uploading pictures for people.  I used Flickr since I already had a Yahoo account.  Maybe I'll change eventually, but this is it for the time.

Only three photos up so far.  I'll get the ones up for the wedding eventually.

Anyone have addresses for MoD or Brenna?

Brandon Sanderson / World Fantasy Nominations
« on: June 28, 2006, 07:10:05 PM »
As you may know, the nominations are due in just a few days.  You can do this via email if you were a participant of one of the last two conventions, I believe.

Might I make a suggestion?  As you may have noticed on my blog post today, I'm advocating Robert Jordan for the Grandmaster award.  It's popular to bash him for some reason, but I think he deserves it, particularly since we don't know how much longer he'll be around.

Nobody in the adult fantasy market has left more of an impact on more people's lives than Robert Jordan.  I read him when I was in junior high.  Sixteen years later, he's getting ready to wrap up the series, and I doubt that he's ever been acknowledged by the awards community.  It's a sad fact that we usually look down our noses at anyone who is too popular.

So, anyway, if you haven't voted yet, consider Mr. Jordan.  And, of course, I wouldn't mind a nomination in the novel category myself!

Brandon Sanderson / Warbreaker: Free Ebook
« on: June 14, 2006, 04:40:36 PM »
I figured I'd start a new thread, since I'll be linking this from my site, and don't want the files to be buried two or three pages in.

This is the place for a collection of sample chapters from the newest book I'm working on.  Scroll down to the bottom of this post for the links, read on for an explanation of what's going on here.

WARBREAKER (tentative title) is the novel I'll be releasing through  Tor after the MISTBORN trilogy.  It is a stand-alone fantasy novel, with no relation to previous books I've done.  From the beginning, I've said that I want to publish stand-alones frequently, since I see a distinct lack of them in the epic fantasy field.

I finished the three MISTBORN books before Tor even published the first one, and I'm putting those through my writing groups.  However, it will be years before Tor--or my writing groups--will have a chance to look at WARBREAKER.  I've already got two books in the queue, and so a lot of the focus will be on them for a time.

However, a number of people have noticed that I'm working on the book, and are curious about it, so I thought I'd start posting some of the sample chapters--both because I wanted to show them what I was doing, and because I wanted to get a bit of feedback.

These then got quite a good reaction!  I went to Tor, and we both decided that posting the whole book on-line would be a great way (hopefully) to improve my readership.  I only ask a couple of things:

1) Consider giving me comments to help me make the book the best it can be.

2)  Don't judge my writing style too harshly based on these chapters, as they aren't polished at all!  This is more than simple prose problems. Names will change--sometimes inside of the same chapter--as I try different spellings and see which ones I like.  The setting isn't as fleshed out as I'd like yet, and some of the mechanics are awkward.  And, I often flesh out characters a lot as I write them.   So, consider yourself warned!  Remember, my published works are much better.

3)  And, speaking of my published works, I ask you to consider buying them.  If you like this book, then you'll like them even more!  Plus, the better my sales are, the more likely I'll be able to keep doing this for a living.  So, please check out Elantris (paperback stand alone) and Mistborn (hardback, first in a trilogy).  Also, consider buying Warbreaker when the hardback comes out!

That said, here are the chapters!  I'll update them as I revise, and add new ones to this post as I decide to put them up.

Thanks!
