Movies and TV / Men watching less TV
« on: March 31, 2004, 02:36:44 AM »
Something about this article in the NY Times (you have to register to read it) gave me a good, devious chuckle.  It is a report about how men are watching less and less TV--especially men in the 'prime' demographic of 18-24.

For those of you who don't want to register, here's a clip:

"The television industry was shaken last October when the ratings from Nielsen Media Research showed that a huge part of a highly prized slice of the American population was watching less television. As the fall TV season began, viewership among men from 18 to 34 fell 12 percent compared with the year before, Nielsen reported. And for the youngest group of adult men, those 18 to 24, the decline was a steeper 20 percent."

They cite a lot of reasons, internet and games being the biggest.  I, personally, am happy about this.  TV is an outdated medium.  It expects us to conform to its demands of timing and had limited programming.  Plus, it's just not stimulating or interesting enough, not when compared to more interactive content.

Viva la revolution!

Everything Else / I need a domain
« on: March 27, 2004, 09:12:38 PM »
All right, so, I need to register a website to be the official 'Brandon Sanderson' writing website.  I'd like to have this up and running pretty soon, though the book won't come out for another year.

Some authors use their names, and 'brandonsanderson.com' isn't taken.  However, I'm not sure I like that.

Other authors use something from their books.  Scott Card, for instance, uses 'hatrack.com'

Interestingly, 'Elantris.com' is taken.  So is 'Dragonsteel.com' and 'Sandmaster.com.'  The .net versions of all three of these are open, however.

Mistborn.com is open, and that's the book I'm writing right now.  'Thewayofkings.com' doesn't feel right to me.  However, 'Oathshards.com' (which is the name of the Way of Kings series) isn't taken.

So, what do you all recommend?  Do any of these stand out to you?  This is kind of important, since I'd like to buy a domain name pretty soon here, so if you have any opinion at all, I'd like to hear your input.

Writing Group / Stealing People
« on: March 27, 2004, 07:32:35 PM »
So, I'm curious how authors can put that little 'Any resemblance to living persons is purely coincidental' clause at the beginning of their books.  We all know that we steal profusely the things around us.  Or, at least, I do.  It's not coincidence that a person who looks kind of like Tage appears in my latest book, for instance.

Suggestions Box / Forum FAQ
« on: March 27, 2004, 05:45:44 AM »
You may have noticed a new topic in the News section.  I decided that I would finally get around to writing the Forum FAQ, since we've had several...uh...incidents with newcomers lately.

It's not finished yet--I only have Part One written out.  However, I have the questions I intend to answer listed at the beginning of the FAQ.

So, do any of you have something you think I should add?  You'll notice that the topic is locked, so instead of replying there, you'll have to do it here.  Also, feel free to mention any typos you notice.  (Goodness knows, I never make any of those....)

Any idea when I'm going to get server/forum functionality back?  I need to update several of the classes (most importantly SE's class, which runs out of titles very soon.)

Everything Else / Cover art
« on: March 26, 2004, 04:51:16 AM »
So, here's the latest from Tor.  They're thinking of using this guy:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0312860722/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-2702599-9990217#reader-link

on my cover.

Comments?  His name is Richard Bober, and I personally really like his attention to detail, but I'm not sure I like his faces.

Only a video game in the loosest sense of the word, but interesting nonetheless.

Writing Group / Must Writing Consume your Life?
« on: March 22, 2004, 07:59:57 PM »
SE's questionings about his future made me ponder on this topic.  Put quite simply, writing does consume my life.  If I'm not physically typing, then I'm either thinking about storylines, working on my writing through a writing group, or I'm doing something else and WISHING that I were writing.

I've heard a lot of authors say that this is what happens to them once they hit 'zen writer' stage.  Everything else in life becomes secondary to the current story.  This is why writers have such high instances of divorce, and why a lot of writers drink so much.

I have to admit, this kind of worries me.  I see this already in my life.  What do the rest of you think?

You guys seen this?

Those crazy Japaneese!  Maybe we'll finally get a really good non-US live-action Sf/F movie.

(Many thanks to Slashdot for the link....)

Writing Group / Writers' Round Table
« on: March 19, 2004, 04:27:13 PM »
I figured this goes here, rather than in books, since this seems more like the appropriate place for a thread dedicated to the writing process.  So, post gripes about writing, problems with writer's block, questions about style--or, if you feel like it, personal victories.

So I'll start.  Woot!  30 pages so far today, and it's only 1:30!

Books / Good Omens is fun, but....
« on: March 09, 2004, 10:02:56 PM »
Blacker Darkness is funnier.  Honestly.  If you could only get that 'plot' thing down, Fell, you'd have it made.

However, Omens is a very amusing book--especially in concept.  While the line-by-line isn't particularly hilarious, the macroscopic workings are all pure genius.  I'm about halfway through, and I've enjoyed it so far.

Everything Else / 42, how ya doin?
« on: February 27, 2004, 03:51:17 PM »
Haven't seen many posts from you lately (probably because I don't look at the RPG section much) and the last three or four times I've gone over to your house to hang out with Sprig and Prometheus, you weren't there.

So, what's up lately?  How are things?

Everything Else / In da movies
« on: February 27, 2004, 02:20:51 AM »
So, Tage, my roommate Earl, Tage's brother, and another friend drove off to Salt Lake this evening to be extras in a Miramax film shooting this evening.  They were told they would be outdoors from 8:30pm until (at the latest) 6:30am.

Can't wait to hear the stories about this one....

Rants and Stuff / Must...have...ipod...
« on: February 17, 2004, 08:11:54 PM »
So, I'm thinking of buying one.  The thing is, I already have an mp3 player.  It's a Nomad, by Creative, and I really like it.  It just has two problems.

1)  It is bulky.  It's the size of a CD player, and quite a bit heavier.

2)  It won't play itunes songs.

So, what do you guys think?  Do I wait a bit longer and see if Creative gets on the ball and adds AAC support for their Nomad series, or do I just go get an ipod so I can be cool.
