Writing Group / Well-Rounded Characters
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:11:27 AM »
So, how do you really do this?  It seems to me that there is a very fine line here.  In an amateur story I recently read, a character suddenly did something completely out of character.  The author's explanation is that he was trying to make the character seem well-rounded by giving him more complex motives.  Yet, it came across to me as a break in characterization.

I wonder about this.  Everyone always says that characters have to be well-rounded, they can't be 'flat.'  This seems very hard to do, especially if it's not a viewpoint character.

So, I know we've had a thread on this, but I can't find it.

Anyway, who's for Lucas simply giving up on Episode Three live-action and simply hiring Genndy to do an animated version for him?  These were far better than the first two movies.

I assume that this is a scam of some sort.  I'm curious, however--this is one I haven't seen before.

Writing Group / Yes indeed, I am a freak.

Ah, the tortured life of a writer!  I just had a GREAT idea for a world setting and magic system.  It came in a single flash of creativity, but I'm only halfway done with the book I'm working on right now!  It's a good book, and I don't want to rush it.  Yet, at the same time, I've got the ever-standing itch to start something new.

Good thing I'm taking the summer off from school to write.  The thing is, I'm not even supposed to be working on my CURRENT project.  My editor thinks I'm revising WAY OF KINGS.

Must...start...new...novel....  <twitch>

Writing Group / Realism and Bows
« on: April 08, 2004, 07:06:45 AM »
So, here's a topic I've always been curious about.  Maybe it won't be of any interest to others, but it's something I'd like to know more about.

How effective is a bow and arrow for close-ranged combat?  Did people really, for instance, use bows to do robin hood style 'hands up or I'll shoot' kinds of things?  Did people really use them inside of buildings, shooting down hallways, that sort of thing (like you always see in fantasy books.)  I wonder how much the use of the bow in stories is influenced by the way we use guns in modern society.  Any ideas?

Rants and Stuff / English 115 Woes (Mark II)
« on: April 08, 2004, 07:02:08 AM »
So, my freshmen just turned in research papers.  Last semester, most of the topics were pretty good.  However, this year I find myself confronted by several that make me itch to give them bad grades just because I find the topics offensive.

Example One:  A paper lauding 'Official English,' something I oppose.

Example Two: (This one is even better.)  A paper talking about how space exploration is a waste of time and money.  (Really.  Would you write a paper about this if you knew that your teacher was a SCIENCE FICTION WRITER!)

I'm put in the difficult position of trying to grade the papers based on their textual merits, rather than responding to the dumb arguments they make.  (Sigh.)

Books / Mainstream Fantasy
« on: April 07, 2004, 08:19:53 AM »
So, I'm curious.  It seems like the big, 'mainstream' fantasy stories are generally the standard 'eternal apprentice' or 'quest' style stories.  (Robin Hobb, Terry Goodkind, Terry Brooks.)

I've been of the opinion, however, that this will change as readership grows older.  They'll get tired of hearing the same story over and over again.  However, maybe I'm wrong.  Fantasy will always have a strong young adult market, and (no offense guys) that age group is notoriously affectionate of reading the stereotypical fantasy plot.  Part of this is just because they haven't had as much time to get bored of reading the same story over and over again with different names.

So, what do you guys think?  Will the market really change as I think it will?  fantasy's really only about twenty-five years old.  It's experiencing quite a boom right now--will that fizzle once people realize that a lot of the plots are similar?

So, Sprig, when are you going to have something better for me to put up than the current screen?  (I'll give you a cookie if you do it soon....)

Everything Else / Cameos
« on: April 06, 2004, 06:11:07 AM »
So, I'm entering a portion of my current book where I have to devise a lot of names.  Anyone want a Cameo?  I could throw in something close to your name, or perhaps a version of one of your usernames, if you wish.  Firstcomers get speaking parts.

Writing Group / Parting Advice
« on: April 06, 2004, 05:57:28 AM »
So, I teach the final session of my Writing SF&F class tomorrow.  I intend to end with a discussion of practical issues--cover letters, query letters, publishing, that kind of thing.

However, I'm open to any suggestions about other things to include.  If you were teaching this class, what parting wisdom would you give the students?

Everything Else / Ultimate Fanboy Story
« on: April 05, 2004, 05:33:24 PM »
So, I was thinking about the Arthur thread, and pondering how that legend has kind of spawned its own varied mythology--kind of an internal 'mythos' of its own.

Then I was thinking about Hellboy, and the Lovecraftian themes, and how the Lovecraft mythos was kind of the other major self-sustaining fictional mythological world....

And, you guessed it.  I figured "Hey, wouldn't that be the most awesome fantasy fanboy story of all time?  I would call it:"

ARTHUR VS CTHULHU!

I can almost see it now....

(Feel free to respond to this, or come up with your own fanboy crossovers.)

Writing Group / Ladies, please help poor EUOL

So, what exactly does it feel like to wear a dress?  Any comments that would help me with descriptions?  What if you'd never worn a gown before, what things would you notice?  Also, skirts, regular dresses, that sort of thing--any issues a male writer should know about?

Everything Else / Usernames
« on: April 05, 2004, 07:05:22 AM »
So, I'm not sure what the appropriate term is--nick, handle, username, etc.  However, I thought I'd start up a thread where people can explain where their chosen forum usernames came from.  Perhaps this will give us an insight to each other's psyches--which may, or may not, be a good thing....

My personal nick heralds back to TLE days, when many of us worked on the staff together.   We had nicknames for former editors who stepped down, but kept coming to the magazine.  Prometheus, for instance, was called 'Obie Wan.'  (Because he was kind of a benevolent spirit of an editor, dead but still hanging around to help out.)

Well, when I stepped down from editor-hood, it was generally decided that I couldn't possibly be a 'good' spirit, like Prometheus.  They decided to start calling me the Evil Undead Overlord (since, during my days as an editor, I was sometimes called the Evil Overlord of TLE.)

So Evil Undead OverLord=EUOL.  Pronounced 'Yool.'  That's me.
