Brandon Sanderson / New BS.com Beta!
« on: September 10, 2007, 07:57:17 AM »
Folks!

We're beta testing the new version of my website, and could use some help.  We want to know how tough/easy it is to find things on the new site.  (One of our main reasons for updating it was because it was really tough to find things on the old site.)

So, here's a link to the beta:

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/beta/

Here's a link to a survey/scavenger hunt we'd like people to fill out:

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/beta/survey.php

(Open a new tab/window to do the hunt, then write your impressions on the form provided.)

You can also post feedback here on this thread.

(Note, I know that some people like the more text intensive older site better, and we understand that.  However, we've decided to go with this one.  The existence of the flash pages isn't going to change; we're just looking to see if we can streamline things any more.)

Brandon Sanderson / Warbreaker Title Question
« on: August 30, 2007, 10:05:05 PM »
My editor is curious what people think of the title of this one.  We're not really thinking of changing it, but we want as much information as possible.  So, weigh in!  Let me know if you've read the book or not, and what your impressions of the title are!

Also of note, if you didn't see it on my website, the cover artist has been chosen.  Check out Dan Dos Santos' website to see the kinds of things he does.

Brandon Sanderson / Bucca
« on: July 20, 2007, 02:17:47 PM »
And, one final post.  I'd like to do a Bucca party, as always, to celebrate the book release.  I'll probably do this one the week after (the week of the 19th-25th.)  This is mostly a post for the Utah crowd who are my friends, family, alpha readers, writing groupers, yadda yadda.  We can probably slip in a forum goer or two if you're really all that interested in hanging out with a lot of people that you don't know while eating lots of Italian food.

Which day works best for you folks?  Somebody contact the less-often-posters (Kristy, Nate G., others) and let them know to look at the post.

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn 2 Pre-Release
« on: July 20, 2007, 02:14:02 PM »
Decided to start a new thread, since this is my forum, and I can do stuff like that.

We have a time for the pre-release!  It will be Saturday, August 18th at 6:00 p.m.

I'd like to bring some prizes for give-always like we did last year to encourage people to come.  The thing is, I don't like giving away free books since...well, everyone there will have bought one in order to get into the drawing.  Seems a little redundant.

So, what do you folks consider to be a good prize for something like this?  Last year, I gave away some of the working manuscripts (early drafts) of some of my books.  I might be able to dig up an old Alcatraz manuscript and give it away, and maybe something else like that.  That sort of thing good enough?

If I were REALLY on the ball, I'd have some of the "Collected bonus materials for Elantris" books printed and ready to give away as prizes, but I don't think those will be ready until around December.

Any other thoughts?

Brandon Sanderson / Taxes...
« on: April 03, 2007, 11:38:32 PM »
...for a writer suck big time.  Self employment tax.  It's a killer.

Just had to rant for a bit.  The truth is, however, it's a little bit fun to poke around and discover all the deductions you can get when you're self-employed.  However, deductions don't really save you all that much, I've found.  12k of deductions has saved me about 2k on taxes, I think.

Brandon Sanderson / Campbell Award
« on: March 30, 2007, 09:00:10 PM »
Well, I'm nominated again this year.  Huzzah!  Thanks to everyone who nominated me.

The sad news is that, for the second year in a row, I'm up against a powerhouse nominee.  Naomi Novik has a book nominated for the Hugo, as well as being nominated herself for the Campbell.  It's exactly the same situation I was in last year with Scalzi, except--if possible--Naomi has a LARGER fanbase with an even more widely distributed book (three of them, actually.)  My chances on the award are very, very slim--but I do get another Hugo pin, and feel quite honored to have been nominated.

Brandon Sanderson / 120 copies of Hardback Elantris
« on: March 13, 2007, 07:56:18 PM »
So, by a tip from Parker (and through some wrangling and such) I managed to buy about a hundred and twenty copies of the Elantris hardback from a discount warehouse.  This is way cool because the hardback has sold so well that there is relatively little chance that Tor will ever remainder it.  (When a book gets remaindered, the publisher decides to send it to bookstores at a cheap price for the bargain tables.  Usually, before a book gets remaindered, the author has a chance to buy any copies he/she wants at the discounted price.)

I was thinking I'd never get to buy a stock of remaindered copies.  Fortunately, this warehouse is out of Canada--and someone up there must have decided to remainder a batch of the books rather than send them back for a refund.  Either way, I got them.  My hope is to sell them through my website as signed and personalized hardbacks for those who would want one.

Here is my question for you folks, then.  These DO have a remainder mark on them in the form off a small black dot on the bottom or top edge of the pages.  (I.E.  if you held the book closed with your thumb on the back cover and your fingers on the front cover and looked at the bottom of the book, you'd find a black dot there.)  This makes them of less value to collectors.

I'm wondering what the general opinion on these is.  Do regular readers care?  I want to find a price for these that would be fair, but that would be worth my time and energy to sell.  I was thinking $15+shipping, which makes them about $3.50 cheaper than Amazon, depending on what kind of shipping you get from Amazon.  (I'd offer free shipping for someone who buys two copies, I think.  I'd have to look at shipping costs.)  So, they'd be cheaper than any other place you can buy them, would arrive signed and personalized with whatever note you want inscribed in them, and would probably include a free bookmark or the like.  However, they'd have that mark on them.

Thoughts?  Opinions?

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn Wallpaper One
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:04:46 AM »
Folks,

I looked on Naomi Novik's site, and lo and behold, she had wallpapers for download!  Why didn't I think of that?

So, I've spent my Sunday afternoon playing with my favorite toy (Photoshop Elements) and trying to piece together something that looked good to me.  I'm not a visual artist, and this will perhaps make the Photoshop experts cringe, but here's what I came up with:

800 by 600
1024 by 768
1680 by 1050 for you screwy people like me

The art is by the talented Isaac Stewart (a.k.a. Nethermore, a.k.a. Ctz Zed here on the TWG.)  I got the backgrounds from a nice person on Deviant Art named
merely-anger.

What do you guys think?  Worth posting on my site?  I know it's a bit busy, but I tend to like wallpapers like that myself.  If I do another of these, I'll try for something more minimalist.

Well, as you all probably know, this whole ALCATRAZ book thing has been quite the ride.  A book I expected to sell for maybe five grand ended up going for much more, and we've all been a little stunned at its progress.

Well, a producer just called my agent and asked about optioning the film rights.  The book isn't even out yet.  Sheesh.

Now, this doesn’t mean that the book will be made into a movie.  Heck, it doesn't even mean that it will get optioned.  99% of all movies that people THINK will get made never make it that far.  However, it's kind of fun to hear.

New Essay Up

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/article.php?id=40

Finally wrote out my ideas on magic formally.  TWG people, would you like to post this as an article?  I'm not sure if writing help would fit with the current atmosphere of the site, which has focused a lot more on reviews and less on articles.  However, if you want it, I'll submit it.

Brandon Sanderson / Young Adult Short Story Publications
« on: February 14, 2007, 12:50:06 AM »
Folks,

My wife is an 8th grade English teacher, and she's having her students write stories as part of their homework this year.  A lot of them are writing fantasy stories, and she's wondering if anyone knows of any magazines or contests that are 1) Legitimate 2) focus on young adult writing and 3) would consider fantasy.  The kids don't have to publish/win, of course--she just wants a place for them to send their stories.

Any ideas?  Writers of the Future, of course, is a nice place for amateurs, but it would be nice if there were a young adult only contest.

If you read it and gave me suggestions, post here with correct name spellings!

I had the writing group on this one, I remember.  I think Ms. Fish and Chimera were involved as well.  Ookla and wife, you guys read this one, didn't you?
