That's really interesting, the idea of tapping a trope purposely as a visual shorthand - of course it makes sense now that I think of it. Cool to get such an analysis of the inner workings of a cover!

As for the characters, it's great that they are well described. Now it just makes me want to read the book more!

PS: Ze goggles! Zey do nozzink!

I agree with Inkthinker that the internet and new technologies will bring good things for fantasy fans. Think about it - the more media technology advanced in the past, the easier it has become to produce niche content (and let's face it, that's what we are). With more distribution ways, cheaper distribution over the net, and a huge new audience in international markets that are suddenly accessible, it will be even easier to make good products for a smaller audience. Which means more good TV for fantasy fans! :)

We even had a sci-fi channel for a while, before it started to just crossbreed animals for disaster movies...  :P

Plus, I swear... goggles are just straight-up marketing shorthand, now. If Wax wasn't wearing the goggles, would it still scream "steampunk" so hard? Can you wear goggles and NOT scream "steampunk"?

This must be somewhat frustrating for you as an artist, I guess? It can be easy to be pigeonholed if people just see the cliché. I am not worried at all that the book is "cashing in on a trope", by the way, it seems more like someone in marketing is trying to cash in on the trope... But hey, if more people buy it, good for Brandon and you guys!

But yeah, the goggles are pretty much it. Although, to be fair, they are welding goggles. So they really should be on a welder. Vest, tie and leather coat plus welder's goggles is not just a steampunk trope, it's the steampunk trope.

I think the best visual medium for epic fantasy is television, when it's done right.  Has anyone else been blown away by the trailers for Game of Thrones on HBO?  I would love to see that same kind of treatment for, say, the Wheel of Time.

Well, epic fantasy is very, for lack of a better term, long. Any other medium that can stretch so long could work. So Tv does, but only if you get enough episodes to do it right. Graphic Novels and Audio can (and do) also work. I would love to see a Stormlight Archive graphic novel with enough room to do it right!

The problem with TV is that if it's to be done right, episodes get expensive, so there is often strong pressure to cut a lot of material. In the case of Game of Thrones, which has turned in my opinion into 90% chaff, that can be a good thing  :D

Side note: It called the freaking Song of Ice and Fire! Spoiler Alert, Jon and Daenerys will save the world and most everything else will be mostly irrelevant. Duh! To use the architect versus gardener analogy, Game of Thrones was an incredibly fertile ground, but it's now overgrown with a lot of weeds... /rant

Wow, that cover doesn't just yell steampunk, it grabs you by the collar of your shirt and shouts "STEAMPUNK!" so loudly you can feel the drops of  spittle hit your face  :D

Definitely not saying I don't like it though  ;)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Ten Focus Characters of the 10 SA Books

I read an interview in which Brandon said that one of the POV characters would be an engineer-type researcher, so I am quite sure Navani will be a POV character and probably get a book - she could also give great insight into Gavilar's actions from another viewpoint.  Since Gavilar's secrets are sort of at the center of the mystery, it would be very interesting story-wise to get her viewpoint, too. Plus, needs more women than just Jasnah and Shallan.

On the other hand, I don't think Elhokar will get a book, or even viewpoints. He is just too one-dimensional of a character for me - definitely not the most elaborate character in the book by far. That indicates to me that he will be more plot-device than viewpoint character in the future - I vote him most likely to turn to the dark side, whatever that might mean on Roshar. Also, Jasnah can give all the input on Gavilar from a perspective of his child, and we know she will be a viewpoint, so Elhokar's history is not likely to be all that interesting.

Maybe this was asked before, but I haven't seen it: Couldn't she sell the shardblade somehow? Sure, it would be suspicious as hell, but Sadeas for one would have payed enough to save Shallan's house more than once, and no questions asked.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The curse and the blessing (WoK Spoilers)

I actually thought that his gift was Renarin's health (as in, he was actually a lot worse somehow without going to the Old Magic) and the curse was not remembering his wife. So he gained a son but sort of lost his wife for it.

I figured the work is in getting the blade turned around mostly. E.g. if you cut into stone ground, you cannot turn the blade (only the ends cut, the flat side of the blade does not seem to do so), so you could either continue the circle all the way or try to pull it out, which would be difficult due to the length. Getting back also would work but nothing else except if you really forcefully twist it maybe...

Stupid observation on the side, if someone is wearing a helmet (or even a hat) you could probably knock them unconscious with a hit of the side of a shardblade. For interrogation  ::)

How exactly is it confirmed that Endowment is alive? We saw seons and aon'dor in Elantris, after Aona was killed. So it could well be that Endowment is not around any more.

In fact, and here's an interesting thought, for all the magic systems we have ever seen in the hands of "ordinary people", the shard status is dead, unconfirmed or severely handicapped:

Aona & Skai - dead. Ruin - trapped. Preservation - gave itself up to trap Ruin. Honor - dead. Endowment -  unknown. (yes, I'm mixing shards and people  ::))

Is there a reason for that? Is Rayse on an extermination trip behind the scenes (well, yes, but is he that far along that?) or is there another reason? We'll know more once we see Scadrial after a few centuries with a living, caring shardholder...

Their being windrunners was in dispute? What we were saying is that Windrunner might be a component magic for two of the Orders of the Knights Radiant, rather than an order itself. I recall Brandon previously saying that each order is composed of a union of two types of magic.

Yes, but we do know that Windrunners is an order, not a power. The powers for windrunners are gravity and pressure. Can't be bothered to look up the sources, try the wiki  8)

What makes you think a dawnshard is a blade? Shardplate also has shard in the name. Shard seems a material/origin description....

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Parshendi (WoK spoilers)
« on: January 26, 2011, 10:34:53 AM »
Jasnah's research was very careful, and with careful accounting for exaggeration and mythologizing, the sources we have in the book make a very good case for the Parshendi being Voidbringers.  Because we don't even know what being a Voidbringer means, I am withholding judgment as to who they are associated with.

Sorry to be nitpicking here, but she makes a case for the Parshmen being the Voidbringers. She herself believes the Parshendi may be a clue to what's going on, and that they are a special case. Quite possibly the Parshendi may be an ally against the rising normal Parshmen - if for example they are resistant to whatever turns Parshmen into killing machines.

Yeah. Yeah that sounds about right. He's not nearly as powerless as Jasnah made him out to be, either. Hell, maybe the thugs in that one alley near that theater were actually EMPLOYED by Taravangian.

But for what? Kill rich theater-goers? Cause that's what they did... The assault on Jasnah definitely wasn't planned - no sane plan relies on waiting for the victim to randomly choose to wander into a dangerous alley without protection.

When reading the books, I didn't ever get the feeling that shardblades are split into subgroups... All unique, but seemingly alike otherwise. For now, we just don't know enough to tell either way I think.
