Movies and TV / 2008 Oscar Predictions
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:49:05 PM »
It was recently brought to my attention that the Oscars are this Sunday, which means that it's high time for our annual Oscar Predictions contest. For those of you who are new, here's how it works: I post this list, you all post your predictions as responses in the same thread, and we cut off the responses Saturday night. Whoever picks the most winners correctly wins the praise of everyone, everywhere in the world, as represented by a little icon you can stick next to your forum profile. I won last year, and I intend to win again this year, even if I have to murder you all to do it. The gauntlet has been thrown.

Some quick notes:
1) Each year I do the 6 big ones, the two writing ones, and two that I think will be interesting categories. This year those categories are Art Direction and Cinematography.
2) Yes, the Oscars are basically just a commercial industry patting itself on the back. We know. That doesn't mean they're not fun to predict, Mr. Elitist.

Brandon Sanderson / What's wrong with everybody's forum name?
« on: December 12, 2007, 08:45:34 PM »
Many of you are new to the TWG forums, having just arrived because you heard about some dude name Brandon. Being new, you may not notice that many of the forum regulars are changing their names, though you are likely to notice that many of the forum names are holiday-themed. This is because we are weird. Let me explain.

We have a weird tradition on these forums--every December we change our forum names into something holiday-esque, just for fun. This became so popular we've actually started a contest around it (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=5602.new). We used to do this for every major (and some non-major) holidays throughout the year, but it got so confusing that no one could ever tell who was who, so we cut back to just christmas/hanukkah/new year's. The actual contest is only winnable by forum members of at least level 3 (another quirk of the forums: you gain xp as you post, and level up like in a video game), but we encourage everyone to join in the merriment. Even that dude named Brandon, known here as EUOL, tends to do it, but nobody ever gets the joke because it's hard to guess from reading it that EUOL is pronounced "Yule," so unless they've met him in person and for some reason called him by his forum name (which happens more often than you'd think), and then get corrected on the pronunciation, they just think he couldn't think of anything good.

But whatever. Long story short: we change our forum names during December, and it's confusing but fun, and you're welcome to join us or ignore us at your leisure.

CCGs / I'm going to a Magic PTQ
« on: December 12, 2007, 06:46:20 PM »
I love going to Magic: the Gathering pre-releases, but I've always wanted to go to an actual tournament--not because I long to crush my opponents or anything, but just because I want to see how I'd do. I wouldn't want to bother with a constructed tournament because I don't have the time (or the desire) to study the metagame in sufficient detail, so I've been waiting for a limited tournament to come along. As it happens, this weekend there's a Pro Tour Qualifier tournament in Salt Lake City that's all limited: several rounds of sealed deck followed by a draft for the top 8. So, to sate my curiosity, I'm going.

The only thing is, I hate going to these things alone. If anyone else out there will be attending the same tournament (or is interested in maybe attending), let me know.

Movies and TV / GI Joe movie
« on: November 20, 2007, 05:45:14 PM »
The GI Joe movie has started casting leads, and the first one announced is, in my opinion, the sexiest cartoon character ever: The Baroness. And apparently the live action Baroness is going to be Sienna Miller? I'm not sold.

Movies and TV / Heroes: Season 2 Spoilers
« on: September 21, 2007, 06:09:16 PM »
The new season starts on Monday, and I'm buzzing with anticipation. I have high hopes that we'll see some new characters, and I'm really interested to see what they do with the fallout from season one--now that all the characters have met, do they stay together? Do they correspond? And both Petrellis are in the commercials they've been showing, so all the people hoping Peter was dead and gone are apparently wrong.

They haven't shown Sylar in any of the commercials, though, thank goodness. I really, really hope there's a new villain this season.

Everything Else / Who wants to be an extra in my company DVD?
« on: August 31, 2007, 06:32:31 PM »
My company is shooting a corporate DVD today in Salt Lake, from 3 until around 6. We won't pay you, but it's kind of fun, and we could really use the help. It's just a street scene so there's no need to dress up.

If you're interested, go to 400 S 50 E in Salt Lake and tell someone with a camera that you're there to be an extra. For those of you who don't know me personally, my name is Dan Wells if you need to mention it for some reason.

My new job is currently swamped under all the writing we have to do, so I've been given permission to hire some freelance writers. If you're interested in doing some work from home (and getting paid for it) please let me know.

Everything Else / Surgery!
« on: August 04, 2007, 04:49:11 AM »
So many of you have known that I've been very sick for about a month. The cause was recently identified as a gall bladder problem, possibly complicated by appendicitis. I'm scheduled for surgery on Tuesday the 7th.

Open bidding on who gets to keep my vestigial organs begins now.

Site News / How Annoying Is This?
« on: July 24, 2007, 06:46:27 PM »
Please post in this thread to see what I'm talking about.

[hide]So in the Harry Potter Spoiler thread we're seeing what happens when people use the hide feature to conceal spoilers--they hate it. The way this works is, you write <hide> at the beginning of your comment, and </hide> at the end, but with brackets instead of arrows, and then no one can see your comment until they've posted in the same thread. This is fantastically annoying, and many of you have complained, but it also has a lot of good things going for it as well: for example, if someone clicks on the "Most recent posts" link at the bottom they'll see the 10 most recent posts out of context--meaning that they'll see a spoiler without seeing the spoiler warning in the thread title first. Hiding certain comments until after you've posted in the thread is a nice courtesy to people who use this feature.

So, I'm asking you all: how much do you really hate this feature? It's unlikely we can do anything about it in the near future, other than just not use the <hide> tags, but I want your feedback anyway. Should it be abolished forever? Is it wonderful? Is it tolerable once you understand that it helps certain people? Let us know.[/hide]

Books / Loan me Harry Potter
« on: July 23, 2007, 11:49:52 PM »
I know that most of you have already bought and finished Harry Potter 7, so there's got to be an available copy sitting on someone's shelf. If you have it, and would be willing to loan it to me for a day or two, let me know!
