Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn on Top 100 SFF novels of All Time!
« on: August 23, 2011, 06:51:38 AM »
There were a lot of titles that never made it to the list.  I'm sad that the Lensman saga didn't make the top 100.  I'm even more sad that Jack Williamson's The Legion of Space wasn't even nominated.  I know it's hard to choose only 100 works out of all the entire genre, but it seems a crime that so many of the old masterpieces were overlooked.

Larry's comments were absolutely right.  I wasn't surprised at all when I heard about their closure.  It's been a long time coming.  While I'm sad to see any bookstore close, I'm not going to shed a tear over Border's passing since it means more business for Indies like the one I work at.  Now if we can just get publishers to realize that selling directly to Indies is a great idea, then everything will be golden!

hey what happens if you pull on something that's halfway in/ halfway out of a speed bubble? Say, pushing a long table - how fast does it move?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that if something like a table extended beyond the edge of a speed bubble it would make the bubble visible.  I don't think the bubble can be extended through solid matter. That does bring to mind an interesting thought. The space under the table could possibly be a window into the bubble and reveal what was happening inside at hyper speed.  Either way, that would make the pushing/pulling on an object that crossed the edge a moot point since the element of surprise would be gone.  The second you pushed/pulled on it, those outside the bubble would see it and react accordingly.

If my above assumptions are correct than the speed bubble wouldn't have any affect on the momentum of the object being pushed/pulled.  The object would respond normally to the amount of force applied to it.

I just finished Hard Magic and while I enjoyed the story, I agree that the illustrations left something to be desired.  I still prefer the Monster Hunter books over the Grimnoir Chronicles. Which is why I'm now reading Monster Hunter Alpha. (squee!)

I feel the same way. Heck, I'm not even that big on RPGs and I'm still rearranging my budget to fit this in.  It's a shiny must have!

Fantastic artwork!  You outdid yourself.  I have to admit, I wasn't going to buy one because of my tight budget, but the cover swayed me.

If Steris gets kidnapped, I'll dance a jig.  I'd be happy if the rest of the book only featured Wax and Wayne.  Can't get enough of them.  In fact, I think "The Adventures of Wayne" would be a great middle grade series.

Ahh.  So a true sociopath can be treated (for the emotional trauma) but they'll always have those tendencies.  Got it.

Oh my gosh!  He totally is!  Especially when he played Badger on Firefly.

Awesome chapter! Everytime Wayne steps on stage I love him more.

I'm still laughing about the dog.

I've always thought of it as being like autism in that the brain is unable to communicate with the empathetic part of the brain.  I might be mistaken though.  I haven't studied it.

I assumed it meant he was cured for good.

That his sociopathy was cured for good?  Hmm...I didn't think that sociopathy was something that could be cured.

Yeah, what happened to Brooke was terrible, but I still think John suffered the greater loss.  Because of her he got a taste of what it was to be normal and that's not something that I think he's likely to experience again.

Books / Re: Epic Fantasy Best Sellers
« on: July 20, 2011, 02:58:28 AM »
The new Tolkein books don't but Silmarilion made #1 back in the day.  David Eddings has also topped the list along with Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks (he's reached #1 for the Star Wars Episode 1 novelization), Neil Gaiman, and Terry Goodkind.  Those are just the ones that reached #1.  There's a bunch more that have reached top 10 status, I just can't think of them at the moment.

If you're limiting yourself to just epic fantasy then I wouldn't include Jim Butcher.  As awesome as he is, the Dresden files are Urban fantasy.  I don't think any of the Codex Alera books made the top 10, but I could be wrong.
