Brandon Sanderson / Re: Roshar and the Ocean. (very minor spoilers)

On a side note, I'd add that many of the creatures so described can't exist in our world, simply because an exoskeleton becomes impractical when it gets scaled up too large (the muscles have a hard time supporting the bulk; muscle strength goes up linearly in size, while mass goes up as the cube).  It's probably not a coincidence that all those creatures have gems in them.  I'm repeating the speculation of others here, but I find their arguments convincing.
Adding to this, Brandon confirmed somewhere that Roshar has less gravity than earth. I believe it was 85 percent of earths but i could be wrong.
Also, how is Roshar not in the spellcheck here?  ???

70 percent actually. But even with that, there's some magic going on as far as the really big ones are concerned.

Brandon said in the Q&A on Tor.com that Kaladin and Szeth are both Windrunners.  So that's a solved debate.

I note that the reason Shallan's first soulcasting was the blood was because of the gemstone she had on hand was a garnet. However, that's probably intentional symbolism on the part of the author, and I agree with you.

I definitely noticed the "coral reef on land" thing the place has going on. (took some college biology).  I think it's really neat.

As for the reasoning behind it, only Brandon knows for sure. Presumably. Somebody should ask him next interview.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: knights radient
« on: January 10, 2011, 05:52:33 AM »
Can I just throw out a random theory on the Knights Radiant here? I was reading the back of the book, and ended up just staring at the line, "before the Heralds abandoned us and the Knights Radiant turned against us." for ten minutes.

For no apparently reason it occurred to me that maybe the Radiants have somehow 'fallen from grace' for lack of a better term, and that maybe they got cursed, or something to that effect.

It's been a long time since I have had the book--I just barely got it back--and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I remember something about the Voidbringers being the parshmen, or at least that's what Jasnah thinks. Any chance the Radiants are Parshendi? or vise versa?

I just had to write it down before I started pulling apart the flaws :P

Any thoughts?

I don't think it was so much the knights that fell to grace, but the humans around them. Without the threat of the voidbringers, humanity started fighting amongst themselves, and the knights got sick and tired of being used in these fights, so they gave up and let humanity fight amongst themselves.

You'd think if they were sick and tired of all the fighting they would have hidden the Blades and Plate away where nobody was going to find them anytime soon, of course, maybe the other orders besides the Windrunners  and Stonewards did, and that's why there are hundreds of Shards missing. Rather then you know leaving the fighting people with even better ways to kill each other.

Also we do have an official typo thread around here, if you find any typos/errors in the book that aren't already posted you can post them there to be fixed in a future edition.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hopes/Predictions/Wild Theories for Book 2

I really want to see everybody intersect at the same time. Szeth shows up to fight Dalinar, but Kaladin gets in the way of that, and as their battling Jasnah and Shallan show up and offer the aid of their Soulcasting abilities. Oh, and maybe Amaram can show up just in time to watch it all :)

The only thing I can think in response to that is "The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills."

The only thing I can think of is "You forgot about Talanel". To make it truly epic, he needs to walk into the middle of things.

Nah Hoid isn't a Herald, he's a worldhopper, he shows up  in most of Brandon's books.

We don't know why he's apparently immortal.

check out the stickies for more on the Cosmere (the underlying universe behind all Brandon's adult  books)

or a bumper sticker with "Keep honking for just 10 more heartbeats..."?

This made me laugh so hard. I agree that almost nobody would get it, but I'd stick it on my car anyway just because of how awesome it is.

I'd buy one for my dad's car (I'm going to let him read WOTK after he's finished the Mistborn books and stuff so he'd even get the joke).

I....go back and forth on this issue. On one hand, if you exist there's always at least theoretically some hope of escaping and being able to exist in something other then  agony, plus I have terrible issues with ceasing to exist On the other hand, if you were stuck in agony for eternity with little real hope of escape eventually you might not want  to exist at all.

Have you read Jim Butcher's stuff? Both The Dresden Files  (urban fantasy) and Codex Alera (traditional fantasy) are good stuff.

creationspren yep.

I think Jasnah does see them somehow, since she recognized them, but she doesn't see them the same way Shallan does, since she doesn't draw much.

and yeah,  she started seeing them out of the corner of her eye in the hospital after she Soulcast the goblet.

How about "there are some problems killing can't solve, for anything else there's Shardblades."

For actual Bridge 4 related stuffs....how about "Bridgemen aren't supposed to survive, but we did." With a big number 4 in the background.

The only way Jasnah would win that is if she caught Szeth by surprise. She'd never be fast enough to get him otherwise.  He would be on her before she had a chance to do anything.

Also, Szeth is too cool to die.  At least that soon.
