Stephanie Fowers / Conspiracy Theories
« on: February 11, 2006, 01:08:58 AM »
Okay, so I've been thinking...Provo seems like a safe place. Seeeeeeems, but we know what's really happening, don't we?

I mean, look at the Provocity towers. Now, I know I've pointed this out before, but none of you took me seriously. I mean, Peter Parker, Pleazzzzz. No, I think it's much more sinister than that. And I will find out the secret behind those towers or bust.

And has anyone noticed those sinister offices above Gold's Gym in Orem? You can tell there are people there (shadows...if you're smart like me you can detect the smallest detail), but supposedly they can only see you? Just why are they there? What's going on?

Or...or...those flashing lights in the distance, or that fleet of helicopters that flew over us today.

So, it just makes me wonder.  Just what ARE they hiding?

Has anyone else noticed anything mysterious going on besides this...or have you been fooled by the facade of 'normalcy' in this town too?  I don't blame you. Because the truth, it's much harder to face.

Stephanie Fowers / The harshness of it all....
« on: February 06, 2006, 10:53:25 AM »
Okay, so you all know the size of a manuscript that you can get away with (90,000-120,000)--and at this point it's my bane (did I even spell that right?)!!!

Does anyone else have my same problem? Do you have any tips to cut down that longwindedness?

Anyhoo, I've just found a really good writer's tip website, it's www.hollylisle.com/fm/Workshops/one-pass-revision.html and I'm seriously going to use it.

Because my answer I generally get back from my queries is that my ms are WAY TOO LONG!

Well, basically this site (and it goes into a lot of detail that I'm not going to get into right now because I get to go to work, yay) gives you some really good tips on how to cut that darn ms down.

You've got to be harsh, cruel, have nerves of steel, but you basically have to write down your themes and sub themes and if you have anything in that ms that doesn't fit, you throw it out. Each scene has to be vital to the plot and have some rising action, some element of interest...if it doesn't throw it out. It talks about getting rid of characters even, too much description, greetings, starting at the action.

Divide your ms into three different piles (edited pile, pile that you've been through, but needed no edits, and pile yet to be edited). It helps to keep a notebook, so you can keep track of what you edited, things added, questions that were never answered.

It was technical, but pretty fun technical stuff. Now, I just have to get my nerves of steel and go at it.

Anyway, if you want to check these out, go to www.schooledmagazine.com (Feb issue) and they're on pgs 14-18!

Sorry guys, I feel like I haven't been able to get to the computer to check out what's going on on TimeWasters. I'm working on the queries (fixing up my sci-fi a little more) and my latest book, 'Meet Your Match.'

But if I could get ANY input on this I would be majorly grateful. 'Meet Your Match' is about a girl, who is trying to prove that girls really like nice guys...not jerks.

So, she makes a wager with the president of the bitter guys in the ward that she will get the biggest squirrelly girl (a girl, who only likes the guys, who are a challenge) to go for the nicest guy she knows (her best friend).

If she loses, bad things will happen, if she wins, bad things will happen...yadda yadda yadda.

So, here's some questions for the guys (and I REALLY hope I'm not giving away anything here):

What is the motivation for a guy to hook up with a girl, he's been friends with for a very very long time?

So, I need some votes.

1--Let's talk about the intimidation factor. Is it real? Can a guy be too intimidated by a girl to ask her out?

(I've heard, 'No, that's just a lie mothers tell their daughters to make them feel better about not getting dates.' I've also heard,  "Oh yeah, girls scare me to death.' What's your take? Somewhere in the middle?)

2--Have you ever been just friends with a girl you wanted to date? Did it every go anywhere from there?

3--What were some of the signs you showed that she might've picked up? (Now, I've heard from some guys that this is ridiculous...the sign the guy gives is asking her out, but then I've heard from other guys that they take the sniper approach. They sneak up on the girl (generally one with 'scared of guy' tendencies) and get to know them better, so that the girl will fall for him that way? Again, what's most realistic?)

OR

Perhaps, I'm just taking the wrong tack on this? Perhaps a guy would never want to date a girl he was friends with? I've heard this too. So, if that's the case:

1-Have you ever been friends with a girl, but would never even think about dating her? Why?

2-(a continuation from question 1) Have you ever changed your mind about dating her? Was it too late?--or is it EVER too late (excluding the fact that she might be married)?

OR

Maybe, I'm still off track. Sooo, if I am...what is the most realistic reason for a guy to suddenly want to date a girl he's known for awhile?—or maybe it's not suddenly?

I'll take input from girls too (who knows it might've happened to you?--getting together with a guy friend, maybe even marrying one?)

Oh, and this is strictly for research purposes. I'm certainly not proposing or anything ;D

Lol, did I keep that in? I guess so.

Stephanie Fowers / The Challenge of the Query letter
« on: February 01, 2006, 10:57:33 AM »
So, this is mostly to get myself to stop procrastinating, but I've set a date for myself. I've found the top five agents and publishers I'm interested in, and now I'll be sending out five simultaneous query letters by Feb 15th. See, now I'm committed. I HAVE to do it.

Oh, and for those, who are interested (after the great query letter debate), I probably will be sending out a SASE with these (darn it, now I have to go buy some stamps). Savage is right. The no SASE tip is too scary. I just don't want to take any chances of seeming unprofessional or arrogant. Stupid? Maybe. Oh well. And I did say PROBABLY...who knows what my mindset will be in fifteen days.

Anyhoo, if anyone wants to go for it with me, that would be so cool. You don't have to send in five, it could just be one...I'm just trying this out as an experiment really. We could be a support group here. Oh, and be sure to tell what you put in your query letter (well, you know, not a blow by blow play if you know what I mean?)--but like what kind of package you put together (1 pg ms sample, pictures? style of query letter, that kind of thing).

But I will report what happens...(gulp) even the rejections!

Stephanie Fowers / We the Peeps
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:49:00 PM »
Hey, I would love to share my music...now as you all know, I can play a guitar, but I don't know anything about this durn computer...noooope! Does anyone here know how I can do that? I DO have it on CD, but I'll warn you, it's pretty crazy stuff.

We recorded it at one of our guys' friends apartments, and it has a garage band sound to it...especially since they only had time for us to record each song once before they went and recorded their stuff at a real studio. But we HAD to record it that day because that was the day before our violinist went to...Rochester New York...I finally got it. Apparently when you record, you're supposed to record each instrument separately, only bands like U2 record together. It's supposed to improve the sound or something when you record separately. Well, we only had two hours to record, so that wasn't an option. I still like it, but of course, I'm biased.

We also have pictures of our band, and the cover of our CD and all that (the cover is on my website on the 'about me' section).

On a side note, I also have some 'Mormon ads' we made for our ward directory...to encourage dating. I took the pictures and the guy who helped me with my website designed the layout. It was a complete joke and they're pretty funny. We even saw it in someone else's chapel (outside a bishop's office). Once I figure out how to download that kind of stuff (and if it doesn't take too much space, I'd do it).

Hey, so does anyone else play an instrument? Have a band? I'd love to hear about it. Any other crazy projects?

Hi Eric,

Do I get to be the first...well, the second to the first to post here? Man, you've got tons of bio info. You put me to shame. You realize, of course, that we'll look to your expertise now. I hope you're ready...cause I'm not! 8)

Stephanie Fowers / Hello!
« on: January 30, 2006, 09:47:03 PM »
Okay, okay, I'll start this out. Well, I never thought that I would be doing this...I bet you never thought I would either, but I'll totally give it a go. Whoo!

As you all know, I've just published an LDS chick lit book called, 'Rules of Engagement.' I'm working on my second LDS chick lit (from a catty villain's POV from a single's ward), called, 'Meet Your Match.' And I have tons of others in the works, 'Prank Wars,' and the chilling horror, 'The Roommate.' Yeah, it gives me chills anyway. You can see all these blurbs on my website.

I'm also doing some screenplays...and maybe some plays in the future...and a few musicals. I've recently been asked to do 'Anastasia,' which should be interesting.

I have a band, 'We the Peeps.' And I write the lyrics and play rhythm guitar (thus the guitarbabe handle). We wouldn't sound that good if it wasn't for our lead guitarist. She's amazing. However, our violinist left on a mission to to to...aigh, I'll get back to you on that...some place in the east. But we DID manage to record a few of our songs, 'Desperate Coed,' 'WWFHE,' 'Intramural Sports Loser,' and 'Sitting on the Porch' to name a few. So, you can say we do a lot of parody.

I ALSO write science fiction and I'm busily working on trying to get those published as well (the names are up for change), but they're called, 'The Destroyer,' 'Legacy of the Lost' (I'm thinking of just calling it 'the Lost'), 'Only a Princess' (needs some rehashing), and my favorite (probably because I'm working on it right now), 'The Few,' which I'll really have to take past some writing groups because I really want it to be good.

As you all know, I'm strategizing ways of how to get these books out there. Hey, maybe this is just a small way of doing it, and I'll have you know I really appreciate your advice on the matter...even if I seem completely ignorant about it.

You know, this will actually be really fun being on this website. I just barely stopped writing for this magazine (I probably shouldn't give the particulars because that would make me a big fat gossipy pants...and maybe someday I'll want referrals, who knows?), but this might actually take the place of it. I knew there was some empty spot there. Ouch!

Anyway, my roommates are starting to call me names, so I'd better go to FHE. But thanks for letting me do this!

Writing Group / Ten tips guaranteed to get MS looked at
« on: January 25, 2006, 07:26:06 PM »
Hey guys, sorry if I'm overstepping my bounds, but I JUST wanted to make sure that everybody who's interested in this kind of thing got the word...and you can delete this after today or whatever...

Jeff Savage is speaking at 7:00 tonight (January 25th) at the Provo library on the second floor, and he's going to give ten tips that are guaranteed to get our manuscripts looked at.  AND (I love this part), he says one of the tips is so outrageous that the majority of us would be too scared to try it. I'm dying to know what that is...

Anyhoo, that's the scoop!

Everything Else / Random Trivia...gotta know!
« on: January 24, 2006, 07:08:07 PM »
Okay guys, I have GOT to know this...for those who live in Provo...look out your window, (facing the west?) and tell me just WHAT are those towers out there. You know, the ones that say Provocity!

Yeah, yeah, the towers really say Provo City, but the joke around my apartment is that it really says Provocity, since some kid in my sister's biology class asked them what Provocity meant and it took them the longest time to figure out what he was talking about (if it was one of you, I'm sincerely sorry, but sincerely grateful too, since now we use the word whenever we can).

So! What are they? I seriously ask everyone I know. I even tried to look it up on the internet. Why this curiousity? Dunno.

Writing Group / Everybody's Current Projects
« on: January 18, 2006, 07:59:01 PM »
Okay, so I've been looking through the sites to find this information...since I definitely don't want to repeat anything (and after some good laughs and some 'ah hahs'--and man, I've been putting some people through some major dejavu), I still can't find what everyone's 'current' projects are.

So, can I hear what you're all up to? Stacer, are you writing a book? I think I got that from what I read? So, let me hear it!

Writing Group / Agents/ publishers/ portfolio
« on: January 16, 2006, 07:47:02 PM »
Okay, so I've published an LDS chick lit book called, 'Rules of Engagement.' It's a romantic comedy about the dating scene around here...BUT it was by far WAY easier to publish than it EVER was with my sci-fi. I can't tell you how many times I've been rejected with the sci fi. In fact, when I got the call from the publisher, I thought it was a joke! My friends have been known to prank me, but before I could say, 'Shut up' and hang up the phone, I decided to 'look stupid,' and play along. Luckily, I soon realized that it was the real thing. AMAZING! I can't tell you how many times I have tried to send my sci fi in with no results, yet the first publisher I sent my romantic comedy to, accepts it? It was ridiculous...yet really really nice for once.
So, I've been reading up on all the 'for dummy' books, and 'marketing strategy' books, and I thought, 'hey, since I've published something, maybe now I have a chance to get some of my sci-fi published.' No big fat chance! Is it a connections thing? Is it an agent thing? Is it an amazing query thing? Is it just pure dumb luck? Does anybody know here?
I actually started writing for a magazine to get some resume (but yeah, it's not sci-fi), and to be perfectly honest I wrote the romantic comedy for resume too (even though I really like that genre now and I'm totally going to do some more that direction), but without the know-how, I feel my sci-fi books are doomed to never see the light of day :'(
Anyhoo, maybe I just need some more input, especially from the sci-fi crowd. Some of my friends are completely clueless about that. If you want, check out my website. It's www.stephaniefowers.com AND I have the blurbs there. Maybe I just need to figure out what places to send it to?--I heard (and maybe I read it on this site) that you need to find out what publishing companies take your kind of books and go from there). And yeah, one of my friends helped me out with the website. Totally awesome of him, but he stuck everything in a pink background. Lol, what can I expect paying someone with just Taco Bell?--he probably was just trying to get his revenge on me. Anyhoo, if you can ignore that part, read the blurbs and give me your honest opinion on the books. That would be awesome! I seriously would appreciate it.
