Brandon Sanderson / Re: "Finish The Book...Brandon!!!"
« on: October 01, 2010, 04:39:01 AM »
What do you guys expect of him? He wrote both the beginning and the end of an epic series, a young adult novel, and now he's writing a book for fun!  ;)

I love that quote. It raps up the awesomeness of Brandon in one line! Its why we all love him. He is undoubtably among the great modern fantasy writers, and the fact that he writes his book so fast doesn't even detract from the quality of the books!!

Or.....does it?

Ew.  Salvatore's "spin like a top with swords in hands" fight scenes.  I'd prefer to think "on par with Kelsier vs the Steel Inquisitor."
Meh, I was talking more about the skill of the combatants involved and less about the skill of the authors. ;)

I tend to think that one of the 10 people in all of the world chosen to become an immortal warrior who battles against the armies of a dark god is probably resourceful enough to deal with the local magistrate.
Just sayin.

There is almost certainly something to it. Dalinar even thinks about how the culture doesn't like to talk about it. Law of conservation of detail wins here again i think

Sure there is no evidence that they COULDN'T use their physical Bodies, but that does not constitute evidence that they COULD. I think this is a likely explanation

Why would Odium splinter Aona and Skai's shards? Why not take them for himself?
Probably because he couldn't use them, much like Ruin couldn't use Preservation's.

So what makes Sazed so special that he can use both? Is it because he has not been corrupted totally by one shard? Maybe when Ruin first got the shard (back when he was a nice guy) he would have been able to take preservations shard as well, but he was too good a guy. But after years of holding one shard, it corrupted him so much that he could no longer hold preservation, it would conflict with his whole sense of being. (I know, i just answered my own question  :-[)

Or maybe it was just by virtue of no longer having a physical body with which to absorb the shards powers? Remember Sazed has to physically touch both Vin and Elend. Seems to me that you can absorb as many shards as you want, so long as you get them all at the same time...

But Ruin and Preservation still had a physical body. When they died those bodies appeared.
That only proves that they had bodies before and after holding a shard, there is no evidence that they were able to transubstantiate. They may not have had "access" to a mundane body while holding a shard. In fact i think that is more likely.

The knights also tend to glow like Kaladin did when he absorbed the stormlight at the end.

Careful there, it says their plate glows, not them. I'm not saying they didn't use stormlight, because they probably did. I'm just saying we've never seen anything that specifically proves that. We still don't know for sure why they were able to use their powers in plate when Szeth cannot, so clearly there is SOME difference there.

And yes there is certainly a reason why Elhokar's plate has an inordinate amount of broken gems, but his plate wasn't that seriously damaged so I don't think Dalinar was pulling from those gems. It seems to me that he would pull from the gems inside his -own- plate first, since they are closer to him. -Something- broke Elhokar's gems, I just don't think it was Dalinar.

We also don't know for sure that the system runs on stormlight. It could be more intricate than that. It's possible that the Spren require stormlight for some reason in order to provide the abilities to a person. But it's entirely possible that this wasn't always the case....off the top of my head I would say perhaps when the almighty was around he was providing the power directly to Spren to act as vessels for who ever they were bonded to, but when the almighty died (and his shard possibly splintered) the spren no longer had direct access to his power. So now they require "batteries" in the form of gems infused with stormlight in order to provide those benefits.

Sorry long winded, but my point is that there are other things that could be going on here, that's just one example of what it might be.

Great now we have to analyze every single chapter.....starting with chapter 51!  We're fairly sure at this point that Kaladin is associated with Jes. So why is chapter 51 headed with nothing but the image for the 2nd Herald? The unknown Herald of Nan? Hmmm

Actually, alot of Kaladin's chapters have Taln at the start. More so than Jezrien.

That's my point, we have to look at all of them now and figure out why.
And several chapters have more than one represented. I think Protecting/Leading fits Kal far more than Dependable/Resourceful, despite him being also being the latter.

Personally I don't think there were any spren around when the Heralds were active, the herald in the proloque ( I suck at remembering names) never mentioned them, even in passing. He didn't think of his own spren, or note any pain/fear spren on a giant battlefield. Also dalinar doesn't mention a single spren in any of his visions...

Nohadon said "alas, not all spren are as discerning as honorspren" in one of Dalinar's visions.

Hmm yeah I'd forgotten about that. Still there is a conspicuous lack of spren everywhere else, I'm not willing to believe Brandon just forgot to include them. There has to be a reason they aren't mentioned.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Truthless

I've always felt like Szeth was far too competent to just be a random warrior who is being punished for something. To me it seems like the "Truthless of Shin" is a recurring title. An intentional position that for some reason the Shin abhor and yet believe is necessary. Therefore someone is chosen, trained, sworn to oaths of service, and armed with possibly the only shardblade possessed by the Shin.
It is apparent to me that he was given the blade by the shin, as he states at one point that the stone shamans would retrieve it upon his death.

The problem is that we don't know enough about the shin culture to know what the purpose of the Truthless is, or why a particular person is chosen for the position. Szeth clearly believes it to be a punishment, although whether it is a literal punishment or just his own personal idea of a living hell isn't clear yet. But I do believe that its a permanent position that will be filled again if Szeth were to die. Unfortunately at this point it's all RAFO, maybe next book will give us enough info for some serious theorycrafting on the subject.

It should be noted that there is no evidence that states the original radiants required stormlight to operate. Dalinar may have nothing to do with the broken gems

I'm not sure I support the idea that the heralds have bonded superspren.....because its sort of cheesy.....but mechanically it DOES fit. After all syl has gotten noticably larger in just the short time she has been bonded to Kaladin, so it is fair to presume that after 4500 years they could get pretty damn big.

My first thought is that if the almightys shard truely is splintered...then spren are a likely candidate for being the result, which is why they aren't in dalinars visions, since the almighty was still active then.

I wouldn't count Kaladin out of the fight with Szeth. He has taken the Oath whereas Szeth presumably has not. He has experience fighting (and beating) shardbearers. He can already use two of the three Lashings, and has time to learn the Basic Lashing (which is, ironically, the best for combat). And, he may well have other surgebinders on his team.

That's my hope for book 2. I want at least some of Bridge 4 to be able to learn Surgebinding. I really think that group will be the seed of the restored Knights Radiant.

Kaladin is dangerous no doubt about it. But Szeth is a friggin killing machine. Lets not forget that Gavilar was considered one of the best swordsman alive, and Szeth took him down. The he took down what 3? 4? Full Shard bearers at once? I suppose it depends on the time line we are talking about.  If Kaladan actually gets trained then I expect to see a serious battle on par with Drizzt vs Artemis
