Brandon Sanderson / Re: Atium Crystals *Minor Spoilers*
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:30:15 PM »
If I remember right, none of the metals are addictive until you hit savant status, when they all become so. It doesn't make a lot of sense for a coinshot to get the desire to push on things all the time, but if they had Inquisitor-like Pushing ability they would probably get hooked on the added perception.

As for Kelsier getting metals to escape, one of the reasons the Pits of Hathsin are where they are is because of all the metal in the ground. On top of that, there is a lot of atium going around the place. All it would take is for Kelsier to Snap, use a bit of trace iron to pull a bead of atium to himself, and things get crazy.
I admit I wondered the exact same thing on my first read through. I wondered how he had all his metals. But really it makes sense that he just got a hold of some atium. Depending on how much he had that's really all he would need to take out the entire guard post.

He also said that writing the WoT has taught him a lot about writing a multi part series

The portraits do not necessarily represent how anyone actually looks. They're more idealized, in-world carved stone art.

So....you're saying someone made a stonework carving of Hoid? I wonder why...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dalinar's visions
« on: October 08, 2010, 08:23:56 AM »
I'd like to get Peter's input on this. I can almost guarantee there is no time travel involved in any way here. None of Brandon's Magic systems have ever involved time travel. Yes they can bend and distort it, and even view things from the past and future, but never interact with it. His interview on the 17th shard pretty much states that all his magic systems follow some type of similar rule set.
Thus an interactive recording of some sort is a far more in-world explanation.

Why the Almighty doesn't have a set of conditionals designed for his own responses is a good question however. Maybe he even does, but Dalinar has been asking retarded questions that have no designated response. Like: "Should I trust Sadeas"

Edit-
BTW Storm that was a rather rude response to a perfectly valid theory, I mean are we trying to encourage the sharing of thought here or not?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dalinar's visions

It seems more likely to me that the Almighty would be able to take a "snapshot" of the personality of the people involved in the event he is 'recording', thus instead of a static recording the visions are able to react to Dalinars actions within the scope of the personality that each character in the vision was modeled after. If the Almighty's powers are equal to even a simple computer (and I have to assume they are) then its no big deal at all to just run the simulation.

Thus the visions aren't "custom molded" to the viewer so much as dynamically generated based on the recorded personalities. In this case we could assume that if the simulation is run without the presence of the viewer to affect it, then it would play out in exactly the same way as the Almighty first saw the event in real life, so long as the simulation was running an accurate portrayal of the characters involved. Then when the viewer does enter the simulation, the character's responses to the situation should reflect what the actual people would have done in a reasonably accurate fashion.

That explanation works for me anyway. ;)

Erunion is right, Dalinar specifically said no one would fault him for giving the next shardplate he found to his son because he had already given a set to Elhokar to give out to whomever he deemed fit.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOK Spoilers: Parshmen
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:50:46 PM »
This all sort of reminds me of my theory as to why they assassinated Gavilar in the first place. It seemed apparent to me (of course I could be wrong) that the Parshendi needed a massive army to camp itself in the shattered plains. -Why- they need that is unknown, maybe its just to kill chasm fiends before they become something worse, or maybe its so there will be an army there to fight off an attack of unknown origin (unknown to anyone not Parshendi).
And since it's exceptionally unlikely that the Alethi would believe the Parshendi when they start describing this horrific threat, the Parshendi knew they would have to do something drastic to get them out there. Like killing their king and then luring them right to where they will eventually need them.
Just my thoughts

Strange, I always thought that the "two become one" line referred to Rand resolving his little Lewis Theron schitzophrinia problem.

Rand's death will be faked or somehow temporary, so anything could happen after his "resurrection".  Rand could "die" in ToM, but I think that's more likely to be in A Memory of Light.

The prophecies do seem to indicate that he'll die before the Last Battle is won, and then be resurrected to finish the job.
They do? Granted its been years since I've given the whole series a full read through, but I must have missed this.

He and Martin (Maybe I'll throw in Rothfuss after I read Day 2)  are almost all you need as a fantasy fan. Everything else is just filler.

Um, yeah, wrong. So very very wrong. Like, so wrong you've redefined the word 'wrong'.

Sanderson, Martin, Rothfuss - they're all good, but they are, honestly, but a small segment of fantasy, no matter how big they are. And calling writers like Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie, Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher, Michael Moorcock, Robert Jordan, etc nothing more than "filler" is a downright insult. By stating such, you are implying that there are no other worthwhile fantasy novels out there, and, again I must declare you so very wrong it is almost painful.

Ouch. Scratch that, it IS painful.

I love Brandon's books. I mean, it should be obvious, if you consider my work on 17thShard.com. But to be honest, he hasn't been around long enough to be a true staple of the genre yet. He will become one, though, in time, and is rising fast. But he isn't quite there yet. Neither is Martin, is you ask me - let the man get some bloody books out on a bloody timely basis and maybe I'll consider it.

To consider all other fantasy "filler" is wrong and insulting, to both the authors who write it, the readers who enjoy it, and the genre as a whole.

You're taking the whole comment way too seriously, and you're adding meaning to my words by saying I'm implying they aren't worthwhile. If you intend to respond to my statement then please limit yourself to responding to what I actually said and not to what you BELIEVE I am implying. Conversation breaks down pretty quickly when you start responding to imaginary comments.

And in clarification I was referring to current "in progress" series, I truly believe there is very little work out there at the moment that is of the same caliber of quality as those I stated. (For the record I almost included Butcher) There is -some- recent work out there that is as good, which is why I said "ALMOST all you need" and not: "You don't need anything else". But generally speaking I stand by my comment.
And lets try not to get quite so offended quite so easily. I mean really, you're entitled to disagree with me, but lets not get into the whole: "What you said is so terrifyingly wrong that I've had to redefine words and my eyeballs have melted out" thing.

I see this as a parody of fans, not a parody of the GRRM-related blog. Or maybe both. But most of the fun-poking has to be at fans, because complaining about the speed at which Brandon writes books is so silly that someone could only do it jokingly.

I think this was a parody almost certainly inspired by Patrick Rothfuss's "fake" blurb about WOK where he said: "Where is book 2? What's taking so long?"

If you know anything about the Kingkiller Chronicles it's pretty funny.

Yeah well whatever Brandon is making it isn't enough. I don't think I'm overstating when I say that Brandon's works are quickly becoming the backbone of the entire fantasy genre. He and Martin (Maybe I'll throw in Rothfuss after I read Day 2)  are almost all you need as a fantasy fan. Everything else is just filler.

So someone just give him a billion dollars and let the man write on a beach somewhere.

What do you guys expect of him? He wrote both the beginning and the end of an epic series, a young adult novel, and now he's writing a book for fun!  ;)

I love that quote. It raps up the awesomeness of Brandon in one line! Its why we all love him. He is undoubtably among the great modern fantasy writers, and the fact that he writes his book so fast doesn't even detract from the quality of the books!!

Or.....does it?
How dare you!!  >:(

Hehe sorry, that was a little tongue in cheek. I couldn't resist. ;)
Everybody in this forum is aware of Brandon's writing pen of awesomeness +3
