Brandon Sanderson / Re: Help!! I'm new!
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:10:39 AM »
Adonalsium is a god material that was shattered way back when (no one knows when exactly). Each Shard of Adonalsium makes its holder into a sort of deity. Ones you've met for sure are Ruin and Preservation. Many currently believe that Aona and Skai were on Sel (the world of Elantris).

As for why people are worried about Sazed... well, we don't want him to die, and apparently Odium wants to destroy everything.

Munin, looks like you caught something here. I just got back from the San Diego WoK signing, and Brandon pretty much confirmed that (1) Grumpy is a Dula and (2) the Hoid-hunters are the 17th Shard.

Me: Could a Dula be a member of the 17th Shard?

BS: Why would you ask that?

Me: Grumpy uses the term 'kayana'

BS: [laughs] There's no reason a Dula couldn't be a member of the 17th Shard.

Then he mentioned that it was the first time someone he'd been asked about that (sorry if you were planning to ask him later in the tour; I made sure to mention that I wasn't the one who caught it). At this point, I think it's really likely that Grumpy is Galladon.

Well, if she killed him before the Blade was summoned, would it automatically summon itself? I'm under the assumption that Shardblades don't disappear if you kill their bearer while they're not summoned, but I can't remember if we've seen a Shardbearer killed while his Blade was unsummoned.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sazed, The effects of holding two shards, and Odium

I don't think you can take another person's Shard if you already have one. To point, wouldn't Ati have taken Leras's Shard once Leras died?
I was under the impression that he couldn't truly use it, because he no longer understood how to preserve.

Yeah, but Odium has had his Shard for so long (presumably), that he probably can't use the Shards of the other Shardholders he's killed. Another interesting question would be why Odium is able to kill other Shardholders. Shouldn't they all be equal in power. I'm extrapolating here, but Ruin and Preservation were equal until Preservation gave up some of his power to trap Ruin. So shouldn't Odium only be able to destroy Shardholders who have given up some of their power?

The question I see hear is how much of a threat is Odium to Sazed? I mean, Odium has one Shard. Sazed has two. I mean, that's got to count for something right?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Bridge Crews & Bridges
« on: September 10, 2010, 05:52:04 PM »
If you think about the physics of it, a bridge could probably make a distance slightly more than half its length. First, the bridge is in movement, so it has forward momentum that could carry it further. Second, the opposing plateau should be lower in height than the one the bridgemen are on. If the bridge were stationary between two plateaus of equal height, it would tip at the halfway mark. Since the bridge is in motion and the plateaus are different in height, it'll carry over a couple more feet once it starts to tip.

Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!

Hi, my name is Tristan. I'm turning 26 in a few days, and currently studying for the third of four sections for my CPA exam. Well, not studying right now. You see, there was this enormous, thousand page book that just came out, and I felt the need to post about it. Pretty sure that I found this board because the author posts here or something like that.

I've been a pretty big fan of the fantasy and science fiction since middle school. David Eddings's Elenium was the first series that I got wrapped up in, and it's been a tale of heavy addiction since. Sometime in the middle of high school I was introduced to the Wheel of Time by some of my friends, and that in turn led to my first online board. College expanded the scope of my reading a bit, but fantasy still held the fondest place in my heart. When Knife of Dreams came out, I didn't go to class for a full week. After Jordan passed away and Brandon was announced as the man who would finish the series, I picked up the Mistborn series to see how well the Wheel of Time would be completed. I was blown away. Since then I have read through all his published works, all released annotations, and most of the deleted scenes on his site.

Aside from a voracious appetite when it comes to books, I enjoy video games (although I have to limit myself or I get addicted; four years playing World of Warcraft showed me that), brewing, and running.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: *Spoilers* The element

Well, it's seems as though Surgebinding requires a fuel for it to work (Stormlight). As such, I would assume that Voidbinding also requires a fuel, and my guess is that the black sphere holds just that (I call it voidlight in my head, but there's probably a better name for it in the series). I'm also guessing that Gavilar acquired from the Parshendi either through theft or trade, but, really, any manner of acquiring is on the table.

As for how you infuse a sphere with voidlight, why it doesn't deplete like a stormlight-infused spheres, why certain people want it, etc. I have no idea.

Brandon Sanderson / Thaidakar *Spoilers*
« on: September 09, 2010, 11:07:03 PM »
Brandon did a very good job of leaving us with more questions than answers at the end of this book (and that's exactly what the first part of a huge series should do!). Anyways, I have a huge number of questions pertaining to Thaidakar and the Ghostbloods, since those names popped up in so many different points-of-view. For reference:

* Gavilar initially thinks that Thaidakar is the one who sent Szeth after him and is very concerned with keeping the black sphere (personal theory: it's a sphere infused with voidlight as opposed to stormlight) away from Thaidakar.

* After Kaladin kills the Shardbearer, Amaran's advisors talk about how the Ghostbloods are growing bolder and can't understand why Thaidakar would risk the Shardblade and Plate in the border dispute.

* Jasnah is convinced that the Ghostbloods (and possibly other organizations) are attempting to have her killed.

* We are led to believe that Shallan's father was a member of the Ghostbloods.

So... who is Thaidakar? My guess is that he's Taravangian, but that's based on no real evidence. Also, will Amaran be an ally since he is opposed to Thaidakar/Ghostbloods, or does he fall under the category of "other organizations?" Finally, does Shallan's father being a Ghostblood have anything to do with her Shardblade?

Bah! So many questions...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dalinar's visions *SPOILERS*
« on: September 09, 2010, 10:49:41 PM »
then things might be a step towards slightly less doomed.

From what I've seen, this is not how Brandon's books work.  We will read because he gives us flashes of hope and amazing action sequences, but he will tear at our hearts and souls the rest of the time. Up until the last couple chapters of the last book, it will appear as though Odium is going to win, just like it appeared that Ruin would triumph or Raoden would fail. At the climax, Brandon will kill off half the characters we have come to know and love over more than a decade. Afterward, we will love him for it even more than we did before.

...
As for Dalinar's visions, I see them being exactly what we're told they are. Most likely they're related to his dalliance with the Old Magic (which I personally think comes from Cultivation) in some way. Of course, the important thing to realize here is that Dalinar just found out that the deity he worships is dead and has been dead for some time. I predict a certain amount of bitterness/depression from him in the next few novels.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Kaladin and Syl *Spoilers*
« on: September 09, 2010, 09:47:18 PM »
Anyone else have the suspicion that Syl will be key to Kaladin getting a Dawnblade? I'm basing this on some information without much flesh, but here's the evidence I see:

1. In the prologue, it's mentioned that the Herald's blade was more "pure" than a Shardblade.
2. Kaladin has an aversion to Shardblades
3. Syl also has an aversion to Shardblades
4. Syl states at one point that even though she abhors killing, she remembers helping it happen before

So, I think Kaladin and Syl dislike Shardblades for the same reason: they aren't "pure." The line about Syl helping kill tells me that she has something to do with acquiring a "pure" sword. Maybe she leads him to one, or maybe she becomes a sword. Who knows.

At the very least, this could help explain why Szeth doesn't have a honorspren following him around. He carries a Shardblade, and his honorspren finds it so dishonorable that he/she won't be around him.
