Everything Else / Re: The Many Flavors of Linux

Right now I mainly use Debian.  I've messed around with Ubuntu, and I put it on my little brother's box, but I don't like it myself.  Too many choices are made for you, in my opinion.  Its definitely a good starter distro, especially for someone coming from Windows.  I'll probably will end up running it on one of my other systems, because it does have some nice features.  I'm also going to try out Fedora, but I've been holding out on that until Fedora 11 comes out, which I think is in a couple days.

As far as Wine goes, I've had no complaints myself.  A couple games I've tried haven't worked, but they're years old and were never popular.  Everything else I've tried works well.

After using Linux though, I'm beginning to see how ludicrous it is to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars for an operating system.  It just doesn't make sense, personally.  Besides that, its just annoying that Windows and Mac don't have the multiple workspaces like Linux does.

What about desktop environments?  What do you like to use?  Personally I like Xfce over Gnome or KDE, but I've been thinking about trying out some others soon.

Well to be fair, the reason Star Wars is so predictable is because of the culture.  When it first came out, no one knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father.  Eragon is predictable because it IS Star Wars, in far too many ways.

Also, the magic system comes far too close to Ursala K. Leguin's in the Earthsea Trilogy.  Really the list of infractions against Poalini is far too long, and by no means do I have the energy to restate them.  Anti-Shurtugal.com is slightly fanatic, but mostly logical in their assessment.

As for me, I feel Poalini has no merit as an author, and should do something else.  However, I will be giving him another shot in the future, simply to see if he has matured as an author at all.

Everything Else / The Many Flavors of Linux

I've been messing around with Linux recently, and I was wondering if anyone on here was as well, or if anyone has.  I'm curious about opinions, stories, or technical bones to pick.  I'm still a noob, but I've been able to figure most of the things out after a while.   One thing I have to say, I absolutely love the command line.

Also, I stuck this in here because it doesn't really fit into Video Games.

Well, I doubt I'll be writing textbooks, but now I have even more reason to minor in something. :)

Wow, I was expecting something much different.  I like it.  Slightly emotional for me, even though I never got into Winnie the Pooh.

Well yeah, I'm not looking for a job in editing right now, I'd just like to learn more about it.

Thanks.  I'll do that. (Although I'm heavily reminded of several commercials "Coming to a library near you: 2009 Poet's Market.")

Okay, I'm back again, finally.

I was wondering if anyone here knew some reputable poetry publishers that I could possibly submit to.  I've been published a couple times since the last time I was on here, but so far only in the my high school's journal and the university nearby.  I figured that I would at least want to give it a shot as far as getting paid for my work goes, and I know a fair amount of you have connections.

Also, I'm interested in learning more about editorial positions and things of that nature, as I served as the poetry editor for my high school's journal, The Argus, and rather liked being involved in that way.  I'd like to start networking in this area.

Any help in either category would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

So yeah, this is off topic, but why exactly is this in Brandon's section of the boards?

Especially not with administrators like SE and Sprig.

Well, in that case, I'd like to pick your brains as well.  That kind of Gumdo as in Haidong Gumdo?  I wasn't aware there was a different Gumdo.  I know there's a Haidong Kumdo, but realistically they are almost the same style. As far as I know they have the same forms.

Noobs bashing noobs.

That's new.

And yet, so gloriously devilish!

Whatever happened to the hazings anyway?  Who currently holds the title of Master of Newbie Smackdown? Was it Sprig?

But Allomancy is a cooler magic system, IMO. To me, it has more style and... finesse than channeling.

I'd say that's kind of the point, no? Channeling isn't graceful, its brute force attacks.  The truly talented channelers, other than people like Rand or Logain, who have tremendous limits to their power, are the ones who have acquired grace, and they aren't exactly easy to find.

It really depends on the channeler as far as the killing is involved.  If the mistborn is dealing with an Asha'man it considerably levels the hesitation factor for the channelers.  Also, in such a case I'd bank on the Ahsa'man, we've seen that they have no hesitation literally blowing people's heads off.  Overall I'd say the mistborn has a better chance in close quarters, as they can move much faster and drop down from the ceiling, but in the open channelers win eight out of ten times.  Although that aside I do wonder if the mistborn could move fast enough to avoid the weaves the Asha'man use to blow people's heads off, as insofar as my memory serves we haven't been told the exact nature of the weave.
