Rants and Stuff / Re: Regarding SE's opinion of Jordan

(Originally posted in the wrong thread. Oops.)
Thank the maker, I thought I was the only one who felt this way. The first 3-4 books were good, but after that he just kept dragging things out. In the last one I read (don't remember which) the entire book took one day of story time, jumping back and forth among the different storylines. After that I vowed never to buy or even read anoter of his books.

You can't entice me to read this one, MsFish, because I already have! Ha! Harbinger ftw! ;D
Seriously, though, I really want to thank you for reviewing these books. You've led me to some great ones that I probably wouldn't have read otherwise.

Role-Playing Games / Re: D&D 4th edition??

I also find myself feeling apathetic toward the change. I'd already decided not to buy any new 3.5 books, as I've spent too much already, and I don't like the way it's getting increasingly overpowered. I have no desire to spend additional money to replace my current library with 4th ed adjustments.
I guess if I were to get angry about something, it would be that 3.5 products were still being cranked out while 4th ed was being put into motion. That seems a slap in the face to gamers who thought they were making a long-term investment in a system that would continue to be "current" for years to come. Sort of like still making out with your significant other when you know you're going to dump them soon.
And, yes, I understand that WotC is a company, and that their focus is to make a profit, and to that they feel reinventing their product is the best way to do that. But I really feel there's something to be said for not alienating your core users.
So I guess I lied. I am kind of upset about it.

I found this awesome guy's awesome blog!
Only, it's not so much "found" as "wrote."
And at least one of those "awesomes" may not apply. :D
I'm specifically posting this for people in my old gaming group (e.g. 42, EP, Cyan, and if they can let Nate know about it) but anyone who has interest can check it out.

A set of travel posters for everywhere in the 'verse you'd want to go.

Yeah, you climbed up the mountain to reach some ruins, right at the end of the campaign. I thought someone else was there, but I didn't remember who. You might have leveled by then, I don't remember. Giant insects was different ruins, early on for those characters. Do you remember why we started new characters for everyone?

Another friend recommended Big Sleep to me a few months ago, it's a great movie. And I watched Night Watch not too long ago, I don't remember if I told you already.

It was ridicuously easy. The things didn't move at all until the PCs grabbed the item, and once they did, only one attack was made the first round -- against an animal companion, to show how insanely nasty and unbeatable these things were. When the PCs ran, the golems only made double moves. It was all flavor, unless anyone was suicidal enough to try and fight it out. Bad GMing? I don't know. Ask Eagle Prince or 42, they were the players there.
And thank you for reminding me that if it has to be explained, it's not funny.

I think one could still do that sort of thing, as long as players are willing to consider different definitions to "defeating" an enemy. If the goal is to get the item, who cares whether you kill the big bad or sneak around it? I'd give same xp either way.
Especially if the guardians are home-brew Shadow Golems, that have +15 to hit, do 3d12+20 damage, are nearly impossible to hit, and when they kill something they send its soul to Gehenna, no save.
And the PCs are 3rd level in a low-magic campaign setting.
And the level/CR disparity is such that they don't get XP for "defeating" them.
Of course, it could be argued in that case that they're not supposed to fight the bad guys....
:D

Books / Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ***Spoilers***
« on: July 23, 2007, 04:18:07 AM »
[hide]I thought the backstory given in Snape's memory was a great touch. It helped to flesh out not only the Snape/Potter dynamic, but also why Petunia so hated magic.

Some things that surprised me:
I expected the Malfoys to turn away from Voldemort after all he had put them through. Before the very end, I mean. When Harry was in their basement dungeon was the perfect opportunity.
I had reserved judgment on Snape for lack of evidence either way, but killing Dumbledore on his own orders? Wow.
Dumbledore's whole attitude on how to go about doing good.

There's other stuff, of course, I'm just trying to assimilate it all right now. I reread Half Blood Prince last week, and spent yesterday and today with Deathly Hallows. Good times.[/hide]

For the record, I think the [ hide ] thing is silly. If you read a thread with "spoilers" in the title, and don't think there will be spoilers, you're a git.

Rants and Stuff / Re: RACISM vs Other Bullying

Bot, my reason for agreeing is that, imo, treating race-based bullying differently than other forms of bullying is itself racist. "He hit me because my skin is green and his is orange" is, to me, neither better nor worse than "He hit me because I wear glasses and he doesn't" or any other reason that one person comes up with for bullying another.

"She must not be very attractive if her sunglasses cover that much of her face."
Neither the speaker nor I think much of the huge bug-eye sunglasses that are en vogue now.

I agree with your opinion, though for a different reason.
Treating someone differently because of race = racism (my definition).
No matter whether one intends to do harm or good by it, treating someone differently because of their race inherently calls attention to it, and places a value on it. Imo, this is inherently harmful, and will do nothing to end racism.
Race is an attribute, not a value. There's a great quote somewhere to that effect, which my brief Internet search was unable to find. I'll look for it later, or maybe someone else has access to it.

I'm reading a book called Hiding the Elephant about the illusionists and other magicians of the 19th/early 20th centuries.
