Writing Group / Type & Gripe, Ink Meeting Coordination
« on: November 10, 2006, 12:50:03 PM »
The votes were cast (all two of them) for the name of our writer's group. It was time to start a new writer's group thread now that the group has been reconfigured.

Shrain is next on the schedule. She says she'll send out her submission soon.

Movies and TV / Eragon
« on: November 01, 2006, 12:53:32 PM »
Trailer is available on IMDB.

Yes, the book was written by a kid; yes, a great deal of the story isn't original; yes, it's not the best writing in the world, but....

The trailer looks kind of fun. However, I'm having a hard time taking it seriously and Malkovich--a favorite of mine in bad-guy roles--sounds so cliche in the trailer that I was annoyed. But then Jeremy Irons makes even cliche dialogue sound original. Anyone know the kid who plays Eragon?

Brandon Sanderson / Operation: Mistborn Costume
« on: October 10, 2006, 05:00:55 PM »
Last week Shrain and I were IMing and she was wishing she had a cool costume for Halloween this year. In particular she wanted to be a Misborn noble (she'll tell you the name), but didn't think she could make the costume. She enlisted my help. So, this past weekend I began the planning stages for Operation: Mistborn Costume!

Books / Stolen Child
« on: May 25, 2006, 06:06:10 PM »
Anyone read STOLEN CHILD by Keith Donohue? Is it worth reading? I often find 'mainstream fantasy' to be crap (i.e., WICKED by McGuire), so I was wondering if any of you have read it and whether it's worth my time.

Rants and Stuff / Grumpiness Supplementary
« on: April 12, 2006, 03:18:30 AM »
My husband is working overnight tonight, which means I'm at home alone with my kids. It always creeps me out when he's gone. Every little sound freaks me out. And I always stay up waaaay past my bedtime and am grumpy all the next day.

Rants and Stuff / At what age do we introduce...
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:04:50 PM »
I've watched Star Wars (ep 4) with my 3-year-old son and he loves it, and asks to watch it everyday. My husband thinks he's too little so asks me not to let him watch it. It does have a few intense moments, but it's only PG. It's not like I'm showing him ep 3, for goodness sake. My daughter was too sensitive to show things like this, so I waited. But my boy loves this stuff.

At what age is it appropriate to show things like this? How young is too young?

Everything Else / Hey Caballero!

Jeromy, it's good to see you! It's been a long time. I have wondered about you, and like you haven't kept in contact with old TLEers, to my regret. There aren't many on this board from when I was there, other than Brandon (EUOL) and Peter (Ookla--who is married to Karen). I saw Carl Earnstrom recently (well, a year ago) and talked to him. He just finished his master's at the U and was moving to Logan or Ogden, I think, for a job there. But that's all I know.

Writing Group / Creepy Antagonists
« on: February 12, 2006, 04:14:29 PM »
The writing group wants me to make my main antagonist 'creepy.' I have no difficulty writing the rest of the story, that's easy and fun. But making the antagonists truly nasty, I've discovered, is rather painful. I can come up with truly awful stuff, but I'm not enjoying actually writing it. It creeps me out just to type this stuff out.

How does one portray a truly nasty antagonist in a realistic way?

Movies and TV / Alias

So, are they going to finish out the season, or what? I'm really angry with this news. We'll see it one way or another because I know they've already started filming. But I still hope they'll air it before the DVDs come out.

Rants and Stuff / Why Anglos Lead
« on: January 24, 2006, 05:39:50 PM »
See this article by Lawrence Mead and tell me what you think. He highlights a few reasons why he believes the United States (among other Anglo nations) is the world's leader:
  • Other rich countries that might show leadership have abdicated
  • Wealth and Law
  • The Projection of Force
  • Confidence in War
  • The Deference of Others
I'm also thinking Technology and Christianity have something to do with it.

Stir. Discuss.

Rants and Stuff / Moving to Utah County
« on: January 08, 2006, 06:30:41 PM »
So my husband starts a job at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in July, and since we don't plan to commute from Salt Lake, where we are now, we have to find a house. We will begin the 'offical' househunting in February.

Anyone have recommendations? I'm leaning toward Springville because the grade schools are supposed to be better there (I will have a 2nd grader next fall). Plus I'd like a house attached to a decent-sized lot, being a gardener and all. Not one of those fancy new houses with a yard smaller than the driveway. Age of house isn't really an issue, but I'd like a nice neighborhood. Nothing really close to the Y, but not a far commute from the hospital (this means NO to Saratoga Springs and the like).

Books / Amazon.com features
« on: December 15, 2005, 11:52:56 AM »
So Amazon.com has these new features: concordance and text stats for books. You can find them under the "Inside This Book" heading on the page for the book you're looking at. Concordance lists the most commonly used words and text stats lists things like readability, complexity, number of words, words per dollar.

For example, Elantris is 12,088 words per dollar!
