Brandon Sanderson / Congrats to Ookla The Mok
« on: May 08, 2009, 06:53:49 PM »
I just wanted to congratulate Peter on getting officially hired on by Brandon. (Which reminds me, does that make you an employee of Dragonsteel Entertainment, or is it being done another way?) I've known Peter for years and know he'll do a great job.

As everyone on the forums has probably noticed, Peter's very helpful about communicating and keeping facts straight. He's got the detail-oriented nature of an obsessive fan, and the professionalism of an industry editor. So congratulations and keep up the hard work!

So did we officially switch it to the 23rd? Please say yes. :)

So Dan and I (joined by the ever-cherished Lovebasket) went there today, and I was quite impressed. Not as inexpensive as In'n'Out or EZ Takeout, but I liked it a lot more. And they have Cajun fries! I've missed those so much since Barry's closed down. Anyway, I highly recommend them.

Well I definitely vote to switch it to the 23rd, so I can come. :)

Argh, that's the one weekend I'll be in Idaho. I can still drop off the iPod w/ player if you're going to do it that weekend.  I sent you an email with details.

I, for one, only watched the first few episodes due to Whedon-loyalty, though I wasn't that impressed with the show. However, as of episodes 4 and 5, my faith has been rewarded and I love the show now. It's gone from good potential to fantastic execution.

I also thought the "copycat killer copying the author's books" thing was going to be a show theme, rather than just a pilot theme. But it looks like they're going with a "annoying, narcissistic author helps tough-as-nails-yet-very-hot female detective solve murders" theme instead. I loved the pilot, and have high hopes for it.

No problem, I definitely want to do the X-Files riff sometime, though.

Are we still doing this? Not everyone checks TWG anymore, so I'll send around an email to some of the Utah people if you want, Nessa.

Don't forget the figurines from Ninja Garden.

Is it? I could see how Warbreaker would fit in, but don't remember Brandon saying it was. Generally the clue is whether or not Hoid appears in the world somewhere. I don't remember a Hoid in Warbreaker, but maybe he'll be in a sequel or something.

Ha! That's right, I'd totally forgotten about him. The only names I can remember from the book are Jerick and Topaz. I can't even remember the girl's name. Sad.

This discussion is more productive if you've managed to read Brandon's BYU thesis, the original Dragonsteel. Three of the main characters have direct contact with shards, which makes it a little easier to figure out what's going on with the shards themselves. As I recall, the Draongsteel world had more shards fall to it than the others, so they're much more prevalent there.

Hoid isn't technically a shard, though by the time you meet him in most books he's bound to one, so it's nearly the same thing.

As far as I know, Warbreaker is not in the same universe as the rest of the epic fantasies. Nor are Alcatraz and Scribbler.

I'd forgotten that Brandon released some of Liar online. Well, how's this for a clue? (And keep in mind that this is just from what I remember...) Chronologically speaking, Liar of Partinel takes place before *any* of the other books. The Hoid you met in Liar's early chapters did die, but he's not the Hoid about whom everyone is currently speculating.

So I should probably revise my earlier statement. There is technically more than one person named Hoid in the Brandonverse, but only one of them is "the" Hoid.
