Role-Playing Games / Re: real world vs fantastic worlds

I had thought about picking up Talislanta a while back.  I downloaded the preview from their site and was blown away by the detail, originality, and fun of the game.  It's another one of those games that I'll probably pick up "someday."

Actually, Slant, I hang out on a lot of boards that Gary frequents and that motivated me to look into this game a few months back.  While it was never a big hit, it has sold well for EGG to keep writing for it steady.  I don't think it was ever long gone as there has been a steady stream of product produced for it after its release.  Lately he's been publishing adventures for it which are dual statted for LA and d20.  Also, I saw ads for this game all over the place.  Dragon, KODT, etc...  I don't know how long they ran though.

Not trying to contradict you, it's just that what I found out doesn't match up with you history... :)

They're even making a MMORPG based on it and Lejendary Earth.  There's screenshots up at Gary's site (which I don't have the address to right now).

Someday I might pick the game up, but right now I'm busy planning out a AD&D 1E (with some Hackmaster) campaign!

Oh, man! I thought I was the only one who was completely freaked out by Lady in White!  When I was a kid, I couldn't even watch the whole thing.

I'm also a big fan of Scream.  As a big fan of horror movies, cheesy or not, it was nice to see a movie that broke the cliches.

I was lucky enough to watch the first half of The Kingdom last year. Very good stuff, though it got really surreal near the end of that half.  Haven't seen the last half of the episodes yet.  There was a rumor for a while the Stephen King was going to adapt it and remake it for us here in the U.S.

While most people thought The Blair Witch Project was pure cheese, I liked it and it scared the bejeesus out of me...still does.  A few of those scenes just stick with you.

Check my first post here, Slant.  It should be coming out on Region 1 DVD sometime next year.

I look forward to seeing it.

Being as my computer has fallen behind most minimum specs I don't keep up too much with what are the most fun PC games out there.

I was wondering if WC III has withstood the test of a few months.  I don't seem to hear about it nor NWN much anymore despite the early hoopla.

Are these games still popular?

Books / So...what's everyone reading?
« on: October 28, 2002, 12:16:53 AM »
Pretty quiet in here of late.  Thought I'd spark some interest to see what you all have been reading of late.

Here's my list:

1) If Chins Could Talk: Bruce Campbell.   My personal hero writes one of the most entertaining books I've read in years.  Not thought provoking, but certainly a lot of fun and a great look at low-budget movie production.  I churned through this baby in one sitting.

2)Lovecraft.  Autumn just feels like the right time to read from his classics, especially with Halloween right around the corner.

3)I Am Legend: Richard Matheson.  I finally got to cross this off of me "To be read" list.  A great story that provokes a good amount of thought.

That's about it right now.  I'm thinking of picking up Ender's Game sometime soon as it's another one on my "To be read" list.

How about a Young Jesus/Young Satan series on the WB where the two protagonists befriend each other while attending high school in heaven where you see the seeds of enmity planted centuries before they become bitter enemies.

Anyone else see this yet?

Creep city, man.  I love horror films and this is one of the better ones I've seen of late.  Very chilling movie that inspires a sense of dread instead of just a few scares. That said...

The only problems I had with it were:
1) VERY disjointed storyline.  Halfway through the movie the story takes this long turn that it doesn't need to go on as it resolves nothing and you find out very little.
2)Far too many cheap/fake scares.  C'mon people, just stop with these already.
3) The kid.  Suddenly, everyone wants to be Haley Joel Osmet (sp).  This kid has one moment where he truly shines and is just in the way the rest of the film.

This was my kind of movie, surreal horror.  Kind of like Muholland Dr. in mood, but nowhere near as intelligent.  Interestingly, Naomi Watts shined in both movies.

I really want to see the original Japanese version now.  Most say its superior in all ways and I'd like to see if that is true.  It's supposed to come out on Region 1/ Region 0 DVDs sometime next year, so keep your eyes open!

Actually, Slant, "A Collect Call to Cthulu" was the name of a Real Ghostbusters episode way back when.

Cthulu ate Carrot Top.

Ratings soared.

Hoody Hoo, Indeed!

My group is currently several sessions into our campaign and having an absolute blast!  Surprisingly, we hack only every other session or so as we get deep into role playing in the Little Keep on the Borderlands.

This is some of the most fun, I've had gaming.  Then again, the fun you have gaming and the system you play most certainly don't have to be related.  It's all about the people...

Anywho, welcome to the boards, Slant!

Sadly, we quit playing Heroquest to move onto role playing back in the day, so we missed out when it became Warhammer Quest.  I still have my Heroquest sets though...what a wonderful game it was!

If you dig through some posts I think you'll find some discussion on Heroqust/WH Quest mixed in with some Mage Knight Dungeons posts.

Cheers!

Role-Playing Games / Re: Setting Ideas Contest
« on: September 09, 2002, 07:21:23 PM »
I don't think Morrus at ENworld is trying to be underhanded...most people just submitted their homebrew worlds and were never going to do anything else with them.  I think the database is a good idea and the contest  is alright.

If you're planning on using your setting commecially, though, then putting it up for public display would indeed be a bad idea.

ENworld is at http://www.enworld.org

IMO, it's the best 3E/d20 site on the net.

I think ENworld is doing a good thing.  They're taking all the submissions weren't accepting them and putting them on their site so GMs looking for inspiration can read through them.  Morrus is also having some charity contest where one of the setting proposals gets published by Natural 20 Press with all the proceeds going to charity.

Not necessarily  If you were contacted and accepted you can't let anyone know about it.  So Fell might have gotten in.  If he didn't, I'd love to hear his proposals.
