Role-Playing Games / What Are you Playing 2: Electric Boogaloo
« on: January 22, 2006, 03:09:32 AM »
It's been a long while since we've done one of these.  What are you playing/running and how is it going.  Prattle on about your current campaigns a bit.

Sadly, and unusually, I actually have little to add this time.

The Vampire: The Requiem game I was running was put on hiatus in October for my wedding and we haven't been able to restart.  We may not and just wait for Deadlands: Reloaded instead.

The long-running Hackmaster game I was playing in got ruined by a sucky player and we switched to an excellent Angel campaign which ended and is now a Gurps: City of Brass campaign, using Hackmaster's City of Brass run by the author of that book.  It's heavy on political intrigue and my character losing virtually everything he holds dear.  In other words, fun so far.

Table-Top Games / Endless Hordes
« on: December 20, 2005, 01:52:57 AM »
I hate to cross post, but I don't think my littles Endless Stars forum is a frequent visit for most TWG folks.

You all should check it out though since I've posted the link to my Endless Hordes playtest.  I really want some feedback.  You old Warhammer grognards will see some familiar stuff along with some new, fun things too.

Check it out!

Table-Top Games / Sprig's in Warmachine, It Seems
« on: December 15, 2005, 10:15:17 AM »
"Khador Spriggan Heavy Warjack - The Spriggan plows into combat like an unyielding avalanche. The ‘jack’s tremendous weight allows it to stampede through infantry, crushing underfoot those too slow to avoid its lumbering assault. With its massive lance, it pierces the heart-fire of enemy warjacks. If its foes survive, it can fend off blows with its formidable assault shield—rugged enough to turn aside most any weapon and heavy enough to deliver crushing counter-attacks."

Endless Stars / Endless Hiatus
« on: December 06, 2005, 05:58:35 PM »
As mentioned, Endless Stars is on hiatus.  You've all figured that out.

The good news is that I've been working on its fantasy brother, Endless Hordes, which is almost ready to playtest.

Let me know if you want in on some of that action.

Everything Else / TWG Forum Trivia
« on: December 01, 2005, 03:07:58 AM »
With all the new people posting, it dawned on me just how long I've been a member here.  It's had to be three or four years now.  You'd think that strange considering the only person on the forum I've actually met was JP.

So let's post some TWG forum trivia for the new folks.

Or something.

I'll start.

1.  My sig is from a long-defunct superhero play-by-post forum game.  Fell was the GM and it was set in high-school.  Sprig's quote comes from the fact that his character was the only one with a low charisma.  The humor comes from the classic Sprig typo.

2. There was a time, long ago, when I was in the top 5 posters here.  This was before SE and Jeffe started their post-run and before the writing group started.  Back, when there weren't any females around too, I think.

Just some random memories.

Everything Else / Grrrr...Staffing!
« on: December 01, 2005, 02:46:26 AM »
So I'm a business owner.  Bought the practice October 1st, something I never imagined myself doing given the fact I have no financial background at all.

Strangely, it seems I have a head for business...at least over the last 2 months.  I'm doing very well and the practice is growing.

I currently have 6 staff members, half of those past retirement age.  So I'm looking to put some new blood in the ranks. I've been searching for a new employee for 2 months now.

I finally had 2 great applicants.  They interviewed and it went very well.  I hired one who quit after 2 days because she got a better offer (grrrr!) and I took too much time with the other and she took a job before I could offer her one.

So I'm back at square one.

This sucks.

Movies and TV / Darkon: The LARP Documentary
« on: December 01, 2005, 02:38:57 AM »
Check this out:

http://www.darkonthemovie.com/

A documentary about LARPing.

The trailer's pretty good.

A lot of people are very passionate about LARPing. I'm not one of them. Of course, I've only played in one, horrible WoD LARP years ago. Even though I know I could have had a better time, it wasn't for me. Tabletop is where I belong.

Boffer LARPs have much more appeal to me, though I've only experienced them through others tales. To do such a thing, which requires being in a very public place, is something I just can't do though. I'm certainly not hiding my nerdery, but there are depths even I fear to go to. And it's sad. It shouldn't be that way. How many of us devote hours a week to playing video games where you accomplish nothing save entertaining yourself for a few hours? Devote that time to something like boffer LARPs and at least you'd have genuine social interaction and get some exercise.

I'm torn. Part of me would love to try this kind of thing out. The rest of me knows I never can without feeling some degree of shame. And that's kind of sad.

...from my internet blackout.

In the month I was gone I:

1) Got married

2) Moved into our house

3) Dodged a hurricane on our honeymoon

4) Took further control of the business

It's been a busy month, but fun.

Role-Playing Games / Fantasy Grounds
« on: September 08, 2005, 12:19:22 AM »
This has been out for a few months and I've been playing around with the demo for about that long.  I finally bit the bullet and purchased the full version.  I'm pretty impressed so far.

It's a program made to run game sessions online, much like WebRPG and the like.  The difference is, this one's good.  It tries to emulate the game table as much as possible, even to the point of actually rolling dice instead of just using a generator.

It allows for the uploading of images and maps which can be shared and altered by anyone who is connected.  It also allows the DM to write up text beforehand and drop it into the chat screen, which is nice.

You can easily keep modifiers on hand and apply them to die rolls just by dragging and dropping.  The DM can assume different 'personalities' in chat with the touch of a button.  It also includes some flavor lighting for what time of day it is, which is a neat little feature.

Basically, it's freaking cool!  It even includes handy SRD link so you can pull up info on any monster or class at the touch of a button.

It's made for running d20.  Other games would be hard to pull off.

Combine this with a program like Skype or Teamspeak and we actually could have a TWG game!

The only downside is price. Full version (DM and Player) is $35.   The Player-Only version is $20.

Role-Playing Games / Official TWG Cartographer for Hire!
« on: September 08, 2005, 12:13:31 AM »
Well, maybe not for hire.  I'll do it for the glory alone ;)

So I've had Dundjinni, a battlemap making program, for a while now and I've actually become marginally proficient in its use.

I would like to volunteer my map making services (battlemap only) for future TWG adventures.

Note, I only have the fantasy toolset...

Video Games / RTS on the Cheap
« on: August 30, 2005, 09:33:48 PM »
Though BF 2 is eating up most of my gaming time, I've picked up both Warlods Battlecry III and Battle Realms for a few bucks each in the past weeks.

WB III is very interesting.  Tons and tons of races, a great campaign system, a fun story...it almost feels like an rpg.  It's also 2D and requires little micromanagement, which I like.  It brings back memories of gaming before WC III came along, in a good way.  I don't like 'claming' resources much, though.

Battle Realms is very interesting.  It's a lot like WC III and at the same time very different.  I like the process of upgrading units and the flavor is great.  There's a lot of base management, though, which takes away from things.

I think I like Battle Realms a little more.

Anyone esle have these? Want to give multiplay a try sometime?

Everything Else / Making Avatars
« on: August 30, 2005, 02:30:21 PM »
Okay, I'm always on the lookout for new avatars, but rarely can I find one I like that fits the dimensions I need.

This, for example, is just too wide for most forums:

I need to resize it to less than 80x80 pixels but can't do it without losing the animation. Grrrr.

Any help? Tips?
