Rants and Stuff / Chainmail Bikini
« on: September 08, 2007, 04:23:41 PM »
Big news!  Over at Fear the Boot we've just launched a new webcomic written by Shamus Young from DM of the Rings (which every gamer should read if you haven't) and Shawn Gaston from Doors and Windows (which a lot of folks here read a few years ago).

It's called Chainmail Bikini and I think it'll have something for just about everyone who's ever gamed.

Check it out, yo!  ;D

Role-Playing Games / Okay, Where is it?
« on: August 09, 2007, 05:19:11 AM »
Okay, you all know I'm not much of a Palladium fan, but I'm interested in the PFRPG for setting purposes.

I know someone wrote up a huge guide to the entire line, but I can't find it in the archives.

Help!

Rants and Stuff / I'm a Podcast Host!
« on: July 26, 2007, 05:33:55 AM »
Hey guys!

I know I haven't been posting much lately, but I'm still around lurking and making sure you guys keep out of trouble.

I did want to pass along some good news you may be interested in.  I'm now one of the hosts of Fear the Boot, which is a gaming podcast based here in St. Louis.  Over the last year they've become pretty popular and are even up for an Ennie Award this year.  I'm pretty excited.  It's like taking The Nerdery to a whole new level.

For those interested, check it out here.  My debut episode is #62 and you can tell I'm a bit nervous.  Hope to have a bit more skill on the mic this week!

Cheers!

Movies and TV / Nightwatch

Anyone else see this yet?  I know it's making the run around St. Louis gaming circles.

It's a russian film that was a blockbuster over there (based on a book that was a bestseller there) that's a modern fantasy/occult horror film.  Lot's of supsense, neat powers, and a bit of action here and there.  Very neat premise.  It is a bit surreal and certainly won't be for everyone, but I loved it.  I can't wait for the sequel, Daywatch, to hit our shores.

Plus, the translations of the books come out at the end of the month.

Anyone else seen it?

Role-Playing Games / Deadlands: Reloaded
« on: May 27, 2006, 01:46:35 AM »
Jeffe can back me up on this...

You all know I'm a huge, huge Deadlands fan. Favorite setting and everything.

Go out and buy Deadlands Reloaded this instant.  It's phenomenal.  It's the best entry point for the game, ever, and is fantastically designed.

Sure, you need Savage Worlds, but it's worth it.

Go.

Video Games / Re: Remembering: Lords Of Magic
« on: May 13, 2006, 12:50:52 AM »
Lords of Magic was the only game I've ever sent back to the manufacturer.  Sierra had a 30 day quality guarantee at the time and I took advantage of it.  Horrible, horrible game.

I heard it got better when patched, but I didn't have the stomach to try it again.

Role-Playing Games / Actual Play: Savage Worlds Necessary Evil!
« on: May 02, 2006, 03:12:35 AM »
This is going to be long because I'm still in my post-game adrenaline rush.

Caution, as NE spoilers follow. What follows is a short account of my group's NE game with highlights as to why Savage Worlds proves, again and again, to be the game best suited to my style of play.

First, this was my first plot point game. I didn't know exactly how it would work out, as I wasn't sure what was provided would actually be enough in case my group got off track, but it has proved marvelous. I'm given all the background and stats that I need but still have plenty of room to maneuver and work in my own subplots and themes as needed. It basically does all the work for you and frees you up to create all the fun stuff that gets campaigns remembered.

Our first session began with character creation. I have two SW veterans and one newbie to the system. They come up with concepts quickly and decide they want an Asia themed crew. They create:

Kirin Khan "The Warlord" - A super-soldier genetically engineered from the gene stock of Ghengis and Kubla Khan. He's bent on retaking to world so he can rule it in the style of his ancestors. Mean, but honorable. He's the party's tank with high toughness and a huge axe. He's also the member who took the Gloater hindrance, which has been no end of fun.

Dr. Lee Fong "The Progenitor" - A Korean super-genius. He's the support character with enough levels of invent to fill just about any gap. He's got a lair and recently picked up a minion.

Nicholas Karamov "Baron Iceblock" - An Iceman-like villain dedicated to raising a communist state to rule the world. His icewall generation has become a key factor in combat, allowing them to isolate pockets of enemies. He also has an undewater iceberg lair not far off the Star City coast.

Together they are The Eastern Bloc!

We then immediately proceeded into Ep 1: Jailbreak. I created some other villains for them to chat with before Dr. D rescued them. Several of which have showed back up in the campaign. They, of course, agree to the terms of their release and immediately assault the prison compound freeing everyone there (including a few more villains who have shown up). One character I added was someone called The Magnificent Martin, a joke of a super-villain who became the laughing-stock after not agreeing to Dr. D's terms as he dropped from the ship. He survived and made his way to the Undergrounder's lair with Ramirez. He becomes important later.

I've never played any of the games though I do know the plots of all of them, so I was going in mostly blind.

The movie gets an A+ for style.  Extremely stylish.

I'd say a C for substance.

Really, it's a fine film for the first 2/3 then it kind of loses its way.

The movie has no scares either, just a lot of creepiness, which I find to be a good thing.  You won't be jumping out of your seat though some of hte images will stay with you long after the movie is over.

The climax was waaaaaay over the top, too.  Possibly the goriest thing I've seen in years.  Be prepared to see a whole lot of blood.

Anyone else seen it and want to discuss the ending?

Role-Playing Games / Palladium in Trouble
« on: April 19, 2006, 09:20:59 PM »
Have you all seen this:  http://forums.palladium-megaverse.com/viewtopic.php?t=57048&postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=0

Now I'm no fan of Palladium and absolutely hate how their vigourous defense of their IP doesn't allow for conversions (since I'm a fan of the RIFTS setting but can't stand the Palladium system), but I sure wouldn't like to see them go under.  Variety is the spice of life and all.

That said, it's kind of crappy that you make a bunch of bad business decisions and then have to ask your fans to bail you out.

Anyway, there's the scoop.

Well, I'm about 10 hours in and so far this has to be one of the most astounding games ever created.  Bethesda did not disappoint.

Anyone else pick it up?

Table-Top Games / Re: Warmachine
« on: March 15, 2006, 03:07:55 AM »
Best. Mini. Game. Evar!

I dropped it only because of lack of time.

Book-wise, Warmachine: Prime is the basic rules.  Has everything you need to know and then some.  Escalation is the next book and has some new units and a big campaign. Apotheosis came out after I quit so I don't have much of an idea what's in that.  I heard it's mostly (good) fluff though.

Buy yourself Prime and a starter box of any of the factions and you'll be good to go.

One of the best parts about the game is that it plays well whether its a 300 pt game or a 1000 pt game.

Just make sure to check the errata.  There's a lot.

Plus, I wrote a review of it for TWG here:  http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=895

Not my best review, but it should suffice.

Jeffe,

What program did you use to make those super-power effects pictures in the earlier gaming chefs?

So I watched this with my wife completely expecting to be bored with it.  After all, I despise Kirsten Dunst (a conversation we've already covered here in great detail) and wasn't sure Orlando could pull off a non-action lead.

I was wrong.  This is one of the best movies I've seen in a little while, actually.  Plus, it has a killer soundtrack and an appearance by My Morning Jacket, one of my favorite bands.

Even Big Head, er...Kirsten, was tolerable in it.

Color me pleasantly suprised.

Table-Top Games / Heroclix: If I wanted to jump back in...
« on: February 03, 2006, 01:38:15 AM »
Some of you may remember that my first article here was all about how to collect Heroclix on a budget.  That was long ago and my collection was sold many years back.

So, say I wanted to get back in just for casual play/collection. I like Marvel way more than DC.  What's the best and cheapest way to go?

I know, I know...grab a starter. What after that.  I haven't been keeping track of expansions.

Role-Playing Games / Deadland: Reloaded - First Preview Up!
« on: January 25, 2006, 01:52:33 AM »
The first preview is up over at Pinnacle and features a new melee damage system. It's a pretty significant rules mod, but easy enough to adapt to. It should also help take care of the struggles taking out a high toughness character.

http://www.peginc.com

I haven't thought the implications through enough to decide if it would be worth using the system for other SW Settings, like Evernight.

Plus, the layout is gorgeous. I can't wait for this book. Too bad the blurb says previews are coming for the next few weeks which means we won't be seeing the books until late Feb/early March at the soonest.
