I'm sure glad Szeth's name got changed from Jek  :P

That's interesting about Shinri and Shallan. Both Davar though; evidently that's pretty important.

I wonder when (if, if) we will start seeing the other nine Heralds in the series. I wonder if they will be more protagonists or antagonists...the latter might be fascinating. They are meant to have been driven slightly insane after all.

Surfing Brandon's site, I came across this

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/29/Tor-Proposal-Part-Four

It's a very old description of the first version of the Way Of Kings (the version he wrote after Elantris and before Mistborn). It's very interesting to see how he first envisioned the series, and contains clues about what's to come in future installments.

Here's some excerpts:

The OATHSHARDS is a massive war epic centering around ten angelic beings who have been driven insane—each in a slightly different way—by millennia spent protecting, fighting for, and dying for mankind. The first book, THE WAY OF KINGS, follows six separate viewpoint characters (one of them an immortal) during a time when the three peninsulas are thrown into a massive war. It is an intensive character piece coming in at over 300,000 words, and can be quite brutal with its characters.

It still does the things I do well—it has several original magic systems (though magic isn't a focus in the first book.) It has a very interesting setting (which is one of its strong points) and has an array of interesting characters from all walks of life. (One a young peasant soldier, one a middle-aged sister to the king, one a battle-hardened nobleman general, one an honor-bound assassin serving an evil master, one a young lady-in-waiting, and the final one being an immortal protector of mankind who is slowly breaking beneath the pressure of his station.) The central theme of the book is that of leadership, and each of the six viewpoint characters are defined in one way or another by how they lead others.

Heh. So we know that the original six viewpoint characters were Kaladin, Jasnah, Dalinar, Szeth, Shallan and Talenal (suppose we know for sure that, yes, he's alive, now). I wonder how different the original plots were. I suppose he combined some viewpoints, to get it down to just three/four.

I think "The OATHSHARDS is a massive war epic centering around ten angelic beings who have been driven insane—each in a slightly different way might clue us in as to what's in store in future volumes. And suggests the Heralds apart from Taln are still alive and kicking in Roshar, and will pop up later.

Also, note the " It is an intensive character piece coming in at over 300,000 words, and can be quite brutal with its characters.". Can be quite brutal with its characters eh? That should be interesting.

I wonder what "during a time when the three peninsulas are thrown into a massive war" refers to. What war? And what are the three peninsulas?

What does everybody else think of this?

Brandon Sanderson / WOK Cover Art Questions
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:36:03 AM »
Hey all

One thing that has been bothering me is that I've never been quite sure what the http://img230.imageshack.us/i/wokwallpaper2560x1600mo.jpg/ cover of The Way Of Kings exactly depicts.

Clearly it's the Shattered Plains, I assume that's a highstorm coming, and a figure in Shardplate standing? But what actual scene from the book is it?

Also, does anybody know if the next 9 books will have covers by Welan aswell? Wouldn't that be incredible! Although it could be interesting to see different styles too, I suppose.

Thanks  :)

Brandon Sanderson / "Finish The Book...Brandon!!!"

Hey, surfing the web I found this hilarious article

http://www.sffnews.com/2010/09/finish-damn-book.html

I assume it's meant to be a sort of parody of the "Finish the book George" articles that have been floating around all the years George R R Martin hasn't released A Dance With Dragons  :D

Of course I don't agree with it!  :D But found it very funny  :P

New Spring is best read after books five or six (I reccomend reading it right after five ;) ).

Any specific reasoning why it's best to read at that time?

Yes, but it's a spoiler. Suffice to say, a certain event happens that would give New Spring more impact, and reading New Spring right after the event (book 5) would, I daresay, give the strongest impact :)

In regards to readers finding Mat's portrayal in TGS as "off", you're not alone. A lot of others do too. However, many others (including myself) thought his portrayal spot on. I think it made a lot of sense for him to act that way-"forcing" humor reminiscent of the first few books-considering the recent changes he has gone through, in particular the change he never thought he would go through ;)

Welcome to WoT!

I have not read New Spring yet, myself. And I am not sure if I should when I start my upcoming reread of the series. When it had first came out, I was going to wait for all three prequel books to be released (there were supposed to be two more after New Spring that lead up to right before EotW) and then start my reread. But now with Mr. Jordan passing away and Brandon leaning towards not writing more past finishing up the series, I might just start New Spring, anyways.

But I would still love to see the other two prequel books.

New Spring is best read after books five or six (I reccomend reading it right after five ;) ). If not, it's good to read it between Winter's Heart and Crossroads of Twilight, as a sort of pick-me-up, to excite you again.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Movie-Casting?

I think Kelsier was described as blonde in the books, but I've always imagined David Tennant in his role

I think he could convey the charisma and the darkness very well

*So sorry for the massive images  :-[ *

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Vote Rand!

Rand needs every single vote he can get, they are absolutely neck-to-neck right now

Everyone vote! Get all you friends to vote!

It's a real shame Brandon hasn't put a big post on his site telling people to vote or something. Bah, I doubt he ever would, but it really will be embarrassing if JAIME beats RAND.
