Matthew Buckley / Payday
« on: August 12, 2005, 04:44:13 PM »
So, I got a royalty check in the mail from Covenant today. I finally got learned how many copies of my book have been purchased...

It's kind of an eye opener. Covenant initially published 5000 books, and have sold over 3000 of the first printing.

I came into this whole book publishing thing pretty naive to the whole process. It's actually been quite the education. One of the most interesting things I have found has been how my book has sold in Deseret Book, verses Seagull Book and Tape.

I have been tracking DB sales and to date, the entire chain has sold 225 books. I don't know what is normal, but I was pretty sure that those numbers were pretty pathetic. However, as I did book signings at the Seagull stores, I found that they were selling quite a bit better. Now that I've got the 'official number' it's clear that Deseret Book has sold less than 10 percent of the total number.

Why the difference? Isn't it true that if you write a good book people will buy it? Ha ha, that is what I thought. What it actually comes down to is how you sell it. DB takes my book and puts in on the shelf, spine out. SB takes my book and makes a pretty display, right up front. They have me come in and sign copies. Covenant sends 'demo' copies to the Seagull employees so that they read the book before it hits the shelves, then they can tell customers about it.

So in other words, SB has been pushing my book, and DB hasn't.

The long and short of it is that I still don't know if I wrote a good book or not. :) It sells well, but only when people in the stores are saying, "pssst, buddie. Wanna buy a book?" Who knows what will happen when SB moves my book to the back shelf to make room for other new books.

There are two ways for me to sell more books. One is that I can take copies of my book and start pushing them on people. I can hold little Amway meetings at my house, call my friends and family, push, push, push...

That's not going to happen.

The second way is for me to write a sequel. Then I 'earn' a right to have another book put out on the front display. Customers will come in, see the book, maybe recognize the name, and ask the clerk about it. The clerks will then say, "Oh, this is a sequel, it's very good (they will have to say that because they are pushing it, and there is a display), and over here we have the first book in the series..."

I'd like that to happen, but I have writers block like you wouldn't believe (especially if you've made it this far into this long post). Who knows if the second book will ever see the light of day?

So, it has been a fun little ride, and it may keep going. The highlight for me is when I think that 3000 people have picked up a copy of my book, read a bit about my life, and maybe even chuckled over it.

Books / Giving away books!
« on: July 14, 2005, 04:34:11 PM »
What do you all think of this?

Basically the author makes this books available for free download online at the same time as the printing of his books.

I would have like to have done this with my book, but very rarely can you find a publisher willing to do this.

I particularly like this quote.

Quote
"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright #154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ours, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."

Robison E. Wells / I'm a bit lost...

Rob, sorry to clutter up your space here.  I'll delete this message tomorrow.

I'm supposed to do a book signing at the "family center" Seagull Book and I have no idea where that is.  Can you help?

Matthew Buckley / Numbers
« on: June 29, 2005, 09:55:57 PM »
Well, we've talked before about how hard it is to track numbers, but I just read a press release from Covenant and it said that since June 1, they've sold about 3500 copies of my book.  Now this is just books sold to book stores, so I'm sure that of that 3500 about 1000-1500 are still in stores, but I have been told that a lot of the seagull stores have been reordering, so that is probably good news.

I'm a bit surprised because I've been tracking Deseret Book numbers and they have only sold a whopping 80 copies.

Anyway, hopefully this is a good sign.

Matthew Buckley / Marketing...
« on: June 26, 2005, 12:52:03 PM »
So, I was doing book signings yesterday and finally worked up the courage to ask the clerks if anybody had actually been buying my books.

I should mention, that I've been tracking sales on Deseret Book, because it's fairly easy to do.  I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't know if it's doing good, bad, , normal, whatever.

However, what IS surprising is that the number of books sold by the entire Deseret chain the first week, was the same number that this one store had sold in two weeks.

And when I asked at the second store, they had sold the same amount as the first store.  So these two Seagull Book stores had sold as many books as all of the Deseret Book stores combined.

It's a bit disquieting to think that my book is only going to be marketed to folks in Utah, and that the biggest LDS book chain isn't going to bother marketing it at all...

I think I'm going to release my next book under Creative Commons.

:)

HOM, did you ever find any easy way to track sales?  I've been tracking DB, but that is just depressing.  I keep telling myself it's because they are all back in the 'fiction' area, and not all over the store like at Seagull...

Any ideas?  Any experience?

Matthew Buckley / Project Next
« on: June 16, 2005, 09:43:09 PM »
So, I've got my next book basically worked out in my head.  The first chapter is all ready to be written.  The only thing stopping me is...  I just don't want to.

Did any of the other authors feel like this after publishing their first book?  I read on the other forums that Rob and Brandon are working on other things, Rob just got his third book in, and is probably working on yet another project.  They are cruising.

And I for the life of me can't bring myself to start anything.

Is this normal or am I just a freak?  Well, I'm probably a freak, but is this a normal behavior, or is it freakish behavior?

Who knows...

Matthew Buckley / Booksignings...
« on: June 12, 2005, 05:12:25 PM »
So I did my first booksigning on Saturday, down in St. George.  The funny thing about books signings, I'm starting to learn, is that people tend to think that you are kind of like a used car salesman. If they make eye contact with you, then you are going to jump up and ask them, "what will it take for me to get you to buy my book today."

The end result, being that I sit in a crowded book store without any human contact whatsoever... :)

So I'd love to meet any of you face-to-face.  Don't even buy my book, just come in, look me in the eye, and say, "hey." I'll probably start weeping.

Matthew Buckley / Podcasting...
« on: June 12, 2005, 04:57:01 PM »
Ok, if all is correct, the audio version of Chapter 1 of my book is on my blog.  Let me know if you experience any technical difficulties.  I should have the text version of chapter 1 up soon, as well...

It was actually quite the process to podcast.  I had to first burn the several tracks of chapter one off my disc, then convert the files from windows format to mp3 using a downloadable program, then piece them together using another downloadable program, then find a server that would hold the 17 mb mp3, then hook up audioblogger to my blog, then call in a post to my blog using my phone, then replace the link to that post with the link to the mp3...

A fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon...

HOM, you mentioned once that Covenant was thinking about trying to market book outside the LDS market.  Do you know if anything came/is coming of this?  Have they tried it?

Matthew Buckley / Chickens in the Headlights
« on: May 25, 2005, 11:43:10 AM »
Well, I've just set up my first book signing, although it is clear down south.  I'll be in St. George, June 11th at the Seagull Book and Tape.  I assume around lunch time.

I have strong feelings about book signings, most of them bad.  :)  I posted my complete thoughts over on my blog, the article called, "I'm the Moron Sitting at the Table".

http://chickenarmpits.blogspot.com/

Anyway, I will be signing just about every Saturday after that for the next 6 weeks, so if anybody wants to get in their quota of heckling, I'll be available.  I'll post when I'll be where as I hear...

Books / Snow Crash

Anybody read it?  Heard of it?

I think I mentioned in my intro post that I was working on my Ph. D. in Instructional Tehcnology.  I've heard about this book several times now in relation to my major.  One instructor  even made it required reading in his course, and now I've just read about it in Wired Magazine in relation to X-Box 360...

Anway, so is this a classic I've missed?
