Books / Interesting application...
« on: October 11, 2006, 05:28:47 PM »
This could be really cool, if a lot of people did it.  It would help you find good books in the 'long tail'.

I've registered as firemeboy, if anybody else bothers to register, feel free to invite me as a 'friend'.  Even if you hate me, I'd still like to see what is on your self.

So, I heard from my publisher today, and they have tentatively accepted Bullies to be published May of 07.

Always exciting news...

You're good to go.

Matthew Buckley / Finished...
« on: August 16, 2006, 12:53:06 PM »
So, Bullies in the Headlights is complete.  The ending was a bit painful to write, and it needs some tweaking, but it's all down on paper.

I also started and finished a second book.  It's a 'chapter book', for pre-readers and very early readers (obviously the pre-readers would have to have it read to them).  It's only 6000 words, but I'm excited about how it turned out.

Anyway, I will be submitting both of these books to my publisher in September, and then we'll see what happens.

Suggestions Box / Question about forum messaging...
« on: July 07, 2006, 12:39:06 AM »
So, I sent another member a message using the TWG messaging system.  But then when I started looking around, I realized that there wasn't anywhere that actually tells you when you have a message.  The only way I can check my inbox is to click on a member as if I wanted to e-mail them, and then click on inbox.

So, does anybody actually use the messaging system?  Is there a chance the person I sent it to will never in fact notice that I sent them anything?\

Thank you and goodnight.

Eric James Stone / writertopia...

Hey Eric, I saw you over at writertopia.  You couldn't score me an invitation, could you?  :)

I tried e-mailing them, but their e-mail submission seems to be not working.

Very cool site.

Matthew Buckley / A bit of personal news.
« on: June 06, 2006, 08:02:10 PM »
So, as many of you know I was raised in a family of 10 boys and one girl. I wrote a book based on the experience, and am currently working on a sequel.

Well, as luck would have it, I have four boys of my own. Well, my wife and I are expecting in October, and we found out today that we have... another boy. Can't seem to figure out how to make a girl, but we're very happy, and have many hand me downs ready and waiting in the wings.

I guess we've officially hit yahtzee.

Table-Top Games / Axis and Allies
« on: March 31, 2006, 11:47:51 PM »
I used to love playing Axis and Allies, but I'll wager I've only played it maybe 4 times.  It takes 6 hours, you're constantly flipping through the rules, but it's a blast.

I came across a computerized version of the game over on source forge, and it looks to make the game a whole lot quicker.  I'm thinking that you could play it over e-mail.  You take your turn, save the game, and then send it to the next player.

Anybody interested in trying it?

Matthew Buckley / Bullies Don't Have Armpits
« on: March 28, 2006, 03:35:21 PM »
I thought I would post progress to my next book here in this thread.  So far I've written 2 and a half chapters.  All of them can be found here.

The first two chapters are pretty solid, but chapter three is 'in progress'.  As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm writing this book in a wiki.  If you would like to post comments, or even 'play along' by editing the text, feel free.  I don't know how it will all work, but it should at least be interesting.

I've also got a few chapters that I'm mulling over in my mind, and if you want to shoot out ideas for those chapters, you can do that as well.  Go to the community portal to see the random stuff.

Everything Else / Anybody run across this?
« on: March 22, 2006, 06:48:52 PM »
A group of scholars apparently think that 9/11 didn't quite happen like was reported.  Looks like we've got another JFK conspiracy type event on our hands.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scholars_for_9/11_Truth

There is a professor from BYU who has written a paper on the subject, and who is a member of the group.

Apologies if this has been posted before.

Matthew Buckley / FictionRemix
« on: February 07, 2006, 02:46:59 PM »
So, I'm thinking about doing my dissertation on the rewriting of classic works of fiction. Take a Shakespeare play, throw it in a wiki, and let large groups of people rewrite it with a hip hop flavor.  I've talked about this a bit before, and I think the results might be interesting.

But is rewriting somebody else's work sacreligious? Would this be an interesting exercise? Are there any short stories you can think of that might be well suited for a 'remix'?

I've already posted one to a wiki I set up, and then added a few very short excerpts of my own stories. If anybody wants to check them out, you can do so here:

http://www.editthis.info/fictionremix/

Feel free to add your own stories, or stories in the public domain that you think would be interesting to 'remix'.

Everything Else / Riddles Round 3
« on: December 22, 2005, 05:25:19 PM »
I thought about starting a Riddles Round 4 thread, and then starting with a 'where is round 3?' puzzle...  But I didn't.  Obviously.

Ok, enough shenanigans.

During the Cold War, a submarine communications officer received the following message in morse code which, when decoded, read:

TOP SECRET
Captain Brown
We have a spy in our midst and we believe he
is giving information to the Russians. We
have recently made a breakthrough and have
been able to narrow down our list of suspects
to one of the 252 members of your crew. We
have no exact information and no physical
description. We are convinced that you are
not the spy and as such we entrust you to
perform some covert investigation to aid us
in our attempt to catch the rogue operator.
We wish you good luck in this endeavour but
we must remind you to keep this secret. We
needn't remind you a refusal to follow these
instructions exactly to the letter will
result in an immediate courtmarshall.
Instructions for arrest:
1) If you fail to find the spy then, upon
docking you will ensure that none of your
crew can leave the ship.
2) If you do ascertain who the spy is then
you should arrest him, confine to the Brig
immediately & place him under 24 hour guard.
From this point on you should cease all
communications with us.

Naturally the Captain was purturbed by this message. He was just about to destroy the message to ensure safety when he was presented with another message which read.

Addendum to previous message:
D-C / T-H / A-A / O-H / C-A / X-K / W-A / O-F / X-D.

After the Captain read this message he was a little less purturbed than he was before and soon decided on an appropriate course of action. What was it?
