Brandon Sanderson / Re: Patrick Rothfuss's review of Way of Kings
« on: September 08, 2010, 03:29:01 PM »
Rothfuss says "In medieval times, people probably would have referred to me as “Phlegmatic” and attributed this tendency to an imbalance of my humors. These days people just think of me as an an irreverent asshat."

I did not know what an "asshat" was before reading this article and looking it up.
Wikipedia: "Asshat is a slightly trendier and less severe variation of asshole,  graphically describing someone who has his “head up his own ass” (i.e., not knowing what’s going on): one is wearing one’s ass for a hat. ”
This made me laugh.

Another great quote was
“This is a really fucking good book. Seriously. Have you read it? No? Go buy it, shitweasel.”
Also very funny.

An excellent and accurate blurb for this book though would be
"Warning: This book may cause severe sleep deprivation until you finish it"

That's the problem with this book.  Even with 1000 pages its over too fast.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Gaz [Way of Kings Spoilers]
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:57:51 AM »
I suspect that Gaz became a bridgeman in another crew.   I think it would have been very interesting/neat if he had been thrown into kaladin's bridge crew.
Perhaps Brandon is saving a later encounter between Gaz and Kaladin for a later book... or maybe not.

Richard fife's review on tor.com says that its implied she was a victim of sexual abuse.  Did any of you see a hint of that?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOK Audiobook/Illustrations (NO SPOILERS)

The ebook text should totally be sold with the audiobooks... That way we could see the images and search though the text, which is impossible with an audiobook if you want to go back and reread a certain chapter, or part of a chapter, good luck finding that....  I'm at the interlude after part 3 and I don't remember what happened at the other interludes so I wanted to go back and check some things...

Anyone know brandon or peter that could request they publish the pictures on Brandon's site in the WOK section?  I think it would be very good marketing for the book! :)

It'd be cool if they included some kind of digital version of the artwork for people who buy the ebook.  Maybe brandon will post it on his website if someone can ask him.  Would like to see it very much.

I will likely buy a copy of the book in addition to the audiobook but I want a signed copy so I'll have to order it and I live overseas so its going to take awhile to get it.

Brandon Sanderson / WOK Audiobook/Illustrations (NO SPOILERS)
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:01:49 PM »
Hi, so I got the WOK audiobook but I realize that there will be no illustrations in it.
Is there a place to see the illustrations outside the audiobook and how do I know when I should/should not look at them to not get spoiled by something I haven't read yet?

No spoilers in this thread please.  Thanks.

Dan Wells / Re: Movie Deal

Any more news on the movie?  I think it could make a really good movie if done well.

First, I enjoyed this book and I enjoyed the characters who I thought were strong and interesting to read about.  I had some issues with a few of them.

I don't know why, but for most of the book, I expected that the bad guy in this book was going to be a human instead of another demon and I was surprised and somewhat dissapointed when I found out that this was the case.

I felt like having a human killer would have forced John to make a more difficult moral choice than killing another demon (Can I actually kill another human being who is a murderer?).  When confronted with the demon, it seemed too easy of a choice for John to kill this second evil monster rather than confronting a human serial killer and deciding whether he was capable of coming to terms with whether or not he was capable of killing this person or not.

OK, sure, he was presented with the opportunity to kill Curt who was not a very nice person, but Curt was not a murderer, just a person who hit his girlfriend once, and Curt was defenseless, so this seems like a much easier choice to make.

I also felt like there should have been perhaps some more foreshadowing of the fact that there could be more demons as I was totally blindsided by the existence of the second demon.

I also thought that brooke's reaction at the end of the book was unrealistic - sure she feels traumatized but she also understands that John saved her from a very bad situation.  I think it would have been more realistic for her to say something like she appreciated him saving her but she wanted to spend some time apart just to be able to forget about it for awhile.  I was quite upset with her after reading this part.

What do you think?

In the next book, I hope we learn more about the origins and motivations of the demons, that there will be more interesting conflicts and that the relationship with John and Brooke will be further developed.

Dan Wells / Website name (Fearful Symmetry)
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:57:51 PM »
Edit:
Just some suggestions about the fearful symmetry website for Dan, if you find this irrelevant feel free to delete.
By the way, I really like your books.

Where did the fearful symmetry name come from?
You might want to change the website name to something with your name in the URL itself such as: danwells-author.com, or dan-wells.com. If a search keyword is included in the name of the website, that website is much more likely to come up higher in the results.

2) You could include a Meta Description in the code of your page, just something very simple like:
<meta name="description" content="The blog of Dan Wells, American Horror authro.  Daily blog updates, store, biography,  forum, contact" />
Its just one line of code to insert in your webpage, below the <title>tag.

When a Meta description contains the keyword that the user is searching for, the search engines like google tend to display this text in the search results rather than some random text from your site, allowing you much more control over how you are presented to online searchers.

Here's what it looks like now when I search for Dan Wells and find your site:
Dan Wells
I'm pleased to report that the “Let Dan Wells kill you” auction was the big ticket item of the whole event, going for a final bid of $500 to a handsome ...
www.fearfulsymmetry.net/

If you changed the meta description tag to the above, someone searching for you would probably see:
Dan Wells
The blog of Dan Wells, American Horror authro.  Daily blog updates, store, biography,  forum, contact.
www.fearfulsymmetry.net/

Finally, some of your foreign readers might not know what "awesome swag" means, you might want to change it to "Store of awesome swag"

I have loved reading the transcriptions on dragonmount.com forums of the questions and answers brandon did on the gathering storm book tour about the wheel of time.  See here (warning: contains wheel of time spoilers of course): http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/board,278.0.html

It reminded me of when Robert Jordan used to do "questions of the week".  These were great and gave awesome new insight into the Wheel of Time.   I eagerly awaited the new question and its answer every week.

Here's an archive of Wheel of time questions of the week for the curious:
http://13depository.blogspot.com/2009/03/tor-questions-of-week.html

Please post here if you'd like Brandon to answer a wheel of time question of the week on his blog or website.  I'd love to see it.
