Brandon Sanderson / Signing in Paris, France @ WHSmith in November
« on: October 11, 2010, 10:46:59 AM »
Hey you guys, my devious plan to get a bookstore in Paris to invite Brandon Sanderson seems to have worked!

Brandon will be doing a signing at WH Smith in Paris before or after the utopiales con. Thanks to them for setting this up and to Brandon for accepting. Details will be posted on their events page once its confirmed, but I wanted to mention it here already for interested people since its not that far off!

Their home page page (http://www.whsmith.fr/indexE.htm) currently says:
"Brandon Sanderson, author of The Gathering Storm and The Towers of Midnight, will be at WH Smith Paris in November. Please check our website regularly for the date and time."

I'm very happy about this because I will get to come to this signing and because it should be LOTS easier for folks in UK/Netherlands/Spain/Belgium and other countries surrounding France to come if you want.

This is a very good bookstore specializing in English books and I like it a lot. Their staff all speak English by the way.

If you are going to come, please consider ordering your copy of TofM from them, or buy another book or something else at the signing.  You might want to call in advance to order the book you want to buy. You can get a 5% off card by signing up for their newsletter: http://www.whsmith.fr/formulairenewsletter.htm

FYI this is also one of the only places you can find reces pieces and other US/UK food not ordinarily sold in France!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: UK WoK release date?
« on: September 12, 2010, 06:55:17 PM »
@Peter
So the Whelan cover costs them more if they want to use it?  Who decides how much that costs... the artist or did TOR purchase the art that it then sublicenses to foreign publishers?  In the second case, it would make sense for them to license it for whatever reasonable price the foreign publisher is willing to pay.

Its true that the Whelan cover does look a lot better than the UK cover.  However, the real issue in my opinion is the publication date.  If it comes out six months later, most of the people who know about the book and are looking to buy it will probably purchase the import... or the audiobook.

The audiobook is available on audible.com and audible.fr so I would guess its available on audible.co.uk and audible.de as well...

I am very happy with my audible subscription so far.. Just wish I could have supported writing excuses through audible.fr like you can on audiblepodcast.com/excuse.  I did mention writing excuses as the refering website but I don't know if you got credit for the subscription.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Help!! I'm new!
« on: September 11, 2010, 02:52:56 PM »
This thread needs to be labled as major spoilers for all of brandon's books.
With that said, I understand who Odium and Rayse are much better now that I've read this.  I didn't pick up that odium was a shard and rayse held the shard from listening to the audiobook.

I just understood that odium was evil and powerful and that's it.

I had the impression that the epigraphs of part 2 were adressed TO hoid and not written by hoid.

How to get way of kings for free...
1) Go to audiblepodcast.com/excuse (subscribing via this link supports Brandon's podcast writing excuses)
2) Take out the 15-day free trial and download the way of kings audiobook.
3) Listen to it
4) Cancel before the end of 15 days if you don't want to continue the audible subscription after that.

OOooh interesting.  Nice catch.  I hadn't thought about that.  Maybe Jezrien is odium in disguise...

Sounds like you had fun.  Do you remember any of the WOT or Kings related questions that were asked during Q&A/answers?

Brandon Sanderson / Galivar: "The Parshendi? That makes no sense."

Why did galivar think that it makes no sense that the parshendi were trying to kill him?

Thanks for the signing report.  It'd be great if people could do more of these especially with details of questions he answered.  Richard Fife also did a writeup on the raleigh signing: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/09/mr-sanderson-goes-to-raleigh

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dalinar's visions *SPOILERS*
« on: September 09, 2010, 10:49:17 AM »
But... Dalinar despite being honorable did not attract an honorspren, Kaladin did.
It can't be so simple a acting honorably because it seems dalinar did (unless his curse is something like that he can't have an honorspren)....

The voice of the almighty was definately a recording with no interaction possible, he said so.
We don't know why the visions were interactive.... That's weird and doesn't make sense from what we know so far.
It will probably be explained but it seems like a hole that dalinar should have thought of.  But he's not a scholar or anything, so that could explain why he didn't think of this immediately.

Perhaps Jasnah or another character will discover this and provide an explanation.

I thought it was pretty clear by the end that "Unite them" meant mankind. All of Roshar.

I could be wrong though.

Yep, this was my impression, but I don't think Dalinar got it yet.
However, this may exclude the parshendi/parshmen if they are voidbringers/minions of odium.

Think I heard brandon mention codex alera books in one of the recent writing excuses episodes.  He said he liked the book a lot.

I haven't read these books yet.
He had written way of kings before he read Codex.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOK: MAP of Roshar online?
« on: September 09, 2010, 10:03:37 AM »
Thanks if you can ask about that from a person who knows brandon and peter.

That map looks a lot more detailed than the map that is in the front cover of Way of Kings because it shows the city locations and the other one does not, correct?  That's what it looked like from pictures I've seen.  I just bought the audiobook for the moment.

Will this map be placed in future printings of WOK or future stormlight archive books?  It really helps to see where the cities are in relation to one another.

BTW, It would be cool to have all the images from the hardcover posted online so people who only bought the audiobook version or ebook version could actually see them.  From the very little I saw in richard fife's review on tor.com (a few pics), it looks like they really add a lot.

I also saw a note that the illustrations might not be as visible in the paperback versions due to the lack of space.
