Everything Else / Re: Best Quote Lately Reincarnated

Quote
After the war, Conqueror returned to Faslane, flying the Jolly Roger, a customary act of Royal Navy submarines after a "kill". When asked about the incident later, Cdr Wreford-Brown responded, "The Royal Navy spent thirteen years preparing me for such an occasion. It would have been regarded as extremely dreary if I had fouled it up."

- From the wikipedia article about the HMS Conqueror (a nuclear powered submarine) sinking the ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands war.

Do you remember where you read/heard this?  I know in the Letters book he mentions he dabbled with a story set after LotR where kids played at being in Orc cults and such, but he stopped because he basically didn't think there was anything more to tell in that world.

In volume 12 of the History of Middle Earth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Peoples_of_Middle-earth
"The New Shadow - An incomplete sequel (approximately 30 pages) to The Lord of the Rings that Tolkien quickly abandoned, set in the time of Eldarion, Aragorn's son."

One of the few History of Middle Earth books I've read.

That was the one with the kids playing as Orcs. I've read it. I don't remember anything relating to a Nazgul - it really was very short. Bear in mind that Tolkien spends so much time describing stuff it takes him forever to move the plot along...

Role-Playing Games / Re: Battlestar Galatica RPG
« on: December 28, 2006, 11:03:02 AM »
I've seen the Serenity RPG in action. It felt much like a rip-off of savage worlds, with extra dice.

And both games suffer from the intristic problem; their settings totally revolve around the events of the show, and there just isn't enough information to stray too far from the show's premise (traders in space! or whatever). Especially with a military Sci Fi, you run the risk of the PC's being constantly overshadowed by the main cast, which starts to annoy after a while.

Perhaps even a tips from an editor saying "Don't do this" or "here is the best way to submit in this situation."

We could beg the ever-lovely stacer to do this idea...

I quite like pie.

And i'd noticed this myself: not many of the reviews hitting the front page are ones I choose to click on. These days my preferred aim for TWG would be tabletop, RPG's and movies/books, since I agree with spriggan that we don't have anything like the resources or people to cover computer gaming with any degree of comprehensiveness. Tabletop games and RPG's tend to be more static, in that a review coming in 6 months late for them isn't too bad, whereas nobody even cares by that point for a videogame. The brothers manage to hit a lot of the movies fairly quickly so we are doing quite well on that front. I'd also like to see a few columns on items of general interest to the RPG/tabletop crowd, such as that column back in the day that was a summary of GNS theory. Possible ideas: comparison notes between the old and new WoD games and some ideas on bringing old material forward for them; the general trends in the wargaming market and which of the historical games are doing best; a column looking at licenced RPG's (ie, star wars, star trek, serenity) and their seemingly doomed nature; speculation on D&D 4e based on the current way wizards is tweaking the 3.5 rules (ie, the addition of Swift actions) rules in their book releases. I could only do a few of those columns myself, since I don't know the subject matter involved. But they would be impressive things to show us as more than just a by-the-numbers review house.

All this reminds me, I should do that Three-Dragon-Ante review sometime.

I watched this on TV. Susan was wooden, but death was awesome. The guy playing teatime seems to have been trying to channel Jonny Depps Willy Wonka. The most disappointing would be Nobby Nobbs - the guy playing him does him perfectly, but his uniform is spotless and he is pretty clean himself, so the overall effect isn't what it should be. Me and the people I was watching it with felt that the wizards were a little... off. Somehow.  Problem of watching it with 3 people in the room being huge discworld fans: we kept nitpicking it :P

In general though, it was pretty good and well worth a watch. Should be, cost the BBC 6 million so I hear.

Ookla, you just gave a spoiler yourself while talking about how other people shouldn't give spoilers...

I've been wanting a game like that for ages now! :o Tage, don't keep this kind of cool stuff to yourself!

If it's playable (not likely in an alpha, I know) i'd be interested.

Actually, as one of the coppers pointed out, a girl who works the streets probably has a better sense of who is going to cause trouble. They have to be careful who they deal with, if they want to stay out of the hospital. So it's likely that whoever is behind this isn't someone who is obviously a danger, as the prostitutes would never go near him.

How come they always go after the prostitutes? :( This one is a lot faster though, since he's already killed 5 women in the space of 10 days. Wonder if that is better or worse - normally this kind of killer murders slowly, so police have time to work on the case but the killer is more careful, wheres this one is moving so fast he must surely make more mistakes? One of the girls comes from the town where I live, as well. Nasty stuff.

I really like the buildings and the street in the background. Nicely done, with this good vibe of good humoured craziness going on. Great for the Discworld. Not so great for Mistborn. It's just too clean for Mistborn. I always think of the city in Mistborn as being a lot like Sigil (from the Planescape D&D setting) in terms of looks. Both are grim, dirty cities where buildings are covered in spikes, with scattered huge buildings and towers surrounded by slums filled with 3 story tenements or hovels.

Otherwise... I had to spend 10 seconds trying to figure out Vin's position, since her arms and legs are so weirdly done. Face, again, looks a lot like something i'd expect on a Discworld cover. The grim reaper is in the wrong book, and the crows are placed so prominently that they attract attention. I don't think anyone would be complaining if the crows were more in the background. Where they are, it makes them seem important.

Really, not certain why he drew this for Mistborn, but I quite like certain elements of it as an actual picture.
