Movies and TV / What are you watching?

So, the book section has a topic where you can say what you are reading, and I thought maybe people would enjoy a section where you can mention what movies and television series you have just seen. If not, then this topic will die a slow, ignominious death, and I will feel the shame of my presumption.

I just watched Ran with my husband, and I thought it was very interesting. It's my second Akira Kurosawa movie, but this one was at the end of his career instead of the beginning.  I liked the use of color and the music.

For tv, I've been watching So You Think You Can Dance, which I like better than any of the other reality dancing shows because the people in this one can actually dance well.

Books / First Line Game

I saw this game one Tor.com and I thought it would be fun to start it here (because I don't know any of the lines they are doing over there). I'll start by listing 10 first lines from various sci-fi or fantasy books. If you know the book it is from, then you post giving the quote, book title, and author. You can then offer another first line for someone else to guess. And please, don't look up the lines on the internet unless you absolutely have to because it is more fun this way. Also, try not to be too obscure.

Books / Clean Urban Fantasy Recommendations

I've been reading more urban fantasy lately, but I'm discouraged at how much of it is R-rated. I was wondering if anyone has good recommendations for clean stuff. Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series is about my upper limit for content.

Writing Group / Female readers

I'm trying to finish up a revision of a story I'm doing, and I've already had my writing group read the first version. I was wondering if there were any people out there who would be willing to read it and send back comments.  This is kind of a future reference thing, since I'm only about halfway done with the revision. The story is geared primarily toward female readers, but the guys in my writing group all seemed to like it.

Has anyone else seen these?  Does anyone else even care?  I really liked Northanger Abbey, but Persuasion was only okay.  Next week is Mansfield Park with Billie Piper (who was in Doctor Who).  I'm not sure how I feel about her in period drama.  I know she was in Ruby in the Smoke, but I never saw that because I despise Philip Pullman.

Has anyone read this?  It's the new book by Robin McKinley.  It's first person and it's a lot more introspective than most, so it was kind of an odd read for me.  I wanted to hear other people's opinions.

Books / Keep track, dang you!

Why can't authors keep track of what they write in their own books?  And I'm not even talking about between multiple books in a series but just within one book.  I read O Pioneers! by Willa Cather this weekend and she doesn't pay attention in it to how much time is supposed to have passed versus how old people are.  It drove me batty!  How hard is it to count?  I really enjoyed the book, but the age mess up kept drawing me out of the story, and I found that frustrating.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else wants to vent on books they read where authors made some sort of glaring mistake like this.

Role-Playing Games / Roleplaying help?

My sister wants to do a roleplaying game for my nieces and nephew, but her experience is limited.  Do any of you have recommendations for someone doing their first roleplaying game that is oriented toward kids? I don't know what kind of resources are out there.
