Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dragonsteel
« on: August 14, 2010, 12:20:16 PM »
Any chance EUOL would be willing to sell digital copies of the Dragonsteel that currently exists?  Just a Word document, or a really long email?  I'd be willing to pay for it.  He's become my favorite (active) author, and even at the speed he writes, I still get impatient for more.  I'd LOVE to read Dragonsteel, but BYU is like 20 hours away...

At the risk of sounding all fanboi...

Director - JOSS FREAKING WHEDON!!! (He'd be awesome with this sort of script.  Especially if he read the books.  He's the kind of guy that would really get into Mistborn).
Kelsier - Nathan Fillion
Vin - Summer Glau WOULD be awesome, but I always pictured Vin more like Ellen Page (sp?)
Elend or Zane - Christian Kane (His physique would be covered up in the rumpled clothing in the first movie if he played Elend)
Straff - Oddly enough, I always pictured David Boreanaz in 20 more years whenever I read about Straff

OK, I guess I didn't so much risk sound like a Whedon fanboi as outright showing my true colors, huh?

OK, my computer is dead, so the only way I can get on the net is from work.  Until recently we had this blocking software, so I wasn't able to get on this site for a long time.  I apparently missed this preview of WoK.  Where is it?  Is it still up?  I would LOVE to read it!

Edgar Rice Burroughs, anyone?  Tarzan (and John Carter) books are 200 pages (if that).  180 of them are descriptions of the scenery.  I mean, I love the guy's writing, just like I do WoT, but really...

OK, he's going to be here in Portland on the 13th.  Should I buy and read the book before he gets here, or buy it AT the signing?  I suppose he would rather have more sales right off the bat than at the signings, huh?

How often did Vin, or Kelsier get into hand-to-hand combat with anyone NOT a Thug?  For that matter, how many times did they really get into hand-to-hand with a Thug?  As someone mentioned, touching an opponent in a fight is NOT easy to do (especially if it had the added weakness of needing to touch their skin).  Think of how often Mistborn shoot away into the night on something metal, and realize that if the "game" were Don't Let Him Touch Me, it would be fairly simple to put dozens of feet between you in mere seconds.

However, a Leacher with good sneaking skills would be able to take out just about any Allomancer at just about any time.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn as a Video Game
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:31:01 PM »
I don't see that it is possible to make a videogame using a Mistborn as the PC without making it an RPG.  There are just too many metals to burn to make it an action game.  The controls would become unwieldy and make the game into a bad one.

What's more, if I were in charge of this game being built, there are VERY few studios I would trust to build it.  BioWare could mail it in, and still come away with a win (look at Mass Effect 2 for proof), so I would trust them to do it as an RPG.  They are really the only studio that just immediately springs to mind.  I'd have to do some serious digging into studios to see who I would trust with a property like this.  The list would be very small.  I've seen too many promising games ruined by people that, while able to build a solid game, just didn't have the grasp of how to build a GOOD game.

Yeah, that wouldn't have worked.  The first thing I did was ask around for someone that spoke French so they could tell me how to PRONOUNCE it.  Then, I asked what it meant.  When they laughed and walked away without answering, I figured it wasn't something I wanted to say.

Thanks. :D

Brandon Sanderson / French Book Names?
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:43:16 AM »
So, I met this really hot woman on the bus.  I started talking to her, and it seems we have fantasy books in common.  I asked if she had ever heard of BS.  She hadn't.  She had heard of the WoT series, and was thinking of reading it.  I explained who he was in relation to those books.  Then told her about the Mistborn trilogy.

This morning, I gave her my copy of The Final Empire.  She said she would be going back home (to France) soon, so I told her to keep the book.  She wanted to know what the names of the books were in French, so she could pick up the rest of them.

Can anyone help me out with this?  Hot French woman needs the French names of BS books, and I want to provide them.  Maybe I can get in a couple of dates before she leaves the country.  Hehe.

if it bothers you too much don't read WoT because 3 days will feel like a year (Winter's Heart is the best example)

Too late.  I've been reading the series since Eye of the World was the current book.

And no, the timeframes don't bother me, it just frustrates me sometimes.  I was more curious to see if this was a problem only I have or if other people get lost in the timelines, as well.

I would love to have him do a signing here in Portland (Oregon, not Maine).  Since I've started reading his stuff, I've not seen any news of him coming anywhere around here (that's been about a year and a half or 2 years, now).

Feruchemy.  All those things I read and can't remember?  Not anymore!  ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Brandon Stereotype Character Relationships
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:25:22 AM »
I, personally, have never wondered who I am.  I've never had to "soul search".  I can only imagine what questions I would ask myself if I did.  I've always just taken who I am as who I am.  Only when I reminisce with old friends about the past do I ever even pause to consider who I was.  *shrug* I guess I just assumed those would be the questions people would really ask themsevles if they were ever unsure of themselves enough that they actually had to ask themselves who they were (that's alot of pronouns...).

Brandon Sanderson / Time Frames
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:08:26 AM »
Perhaps it's me.  Perhaps it's the way I read.  However, one big problem I have with books is lack of temporal references.  I get lost in the timeline of the books.  I'm going to use BS as an example, here.  Don't get me wrong, I love his books, I just get frustrated at this (and BS is FAR from the only author I have this problem with).

For instance:
Elantris - Is it just me, or does this book FEEL like it takes place over the course of a year or more?  It's mentioned a few times that it's in a 90 day time period (the timeframe given to Hrathen by Wyrn).  However, the flow of the book makes it feel like it takes much longer than this.

Mistborn: The Final Empire - This book feels like it takes place over just a couple of months (3, maybe 4), but it says it takes place over the course of an entire year.

Does anyone else have this problem, or is it truly just me?  If you do, please cite examples.
